Tony Stinkmetal on the Full Moon Show and Tom Murrin, Beloved Alien Comic

September 6, 2017

The Full Moon Show is an ongoing series of performances going on every 28 days since the early 1970s.

It is also the invention seminal performance artist and Alien Comic Tom Murrin… Sort of.

This is the way I heard Tom tell it during a Full Moon Show at Dixon Place, but I have a feeling there may be variations.

Tom had been traveling the world with the La Mama with his plays like DICK STRONG. When he got to India he saw a very wise many standing on the banks of the River Ganges addressing his followers. He pointed what Tom described as, “the longest finger I’ve ever seen” directly at Tom. Then the wiseman spoke to Tom in perfect English.

He told Tom that if he did a show every time the moon was full he would be cared for and watched over by Luna Macaroona, a great and powerful lady-force who lives on the moon.

Sometimes the Full Moon Shows were massively staged prop-strewn nite club extravaganzas. Sometimes it was just Tom standing outside a friend’s window doing magic tricks. Both show types filled the world with new art and moon vibes. A few decades ago Tom recruited performer/ force of nature, Salley to co-host a series of shows called Avant Garderama at PS 122.

Tom went to live on the moon full time in 2012. He left his art at Howl Arts to inspire future performance artists. Howl Happening: An Arturo Vega Project offered to give The Full Moon Show a home. That is when Salley called on me, a writer and performer, to carry on the proud tradition every 28 days!

The next Full Moon Show is titled The Lazy Eye Moon, happening on September 6 at 4pm SHARP! ALL are welcome.
