Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york No. 72: CURT HOPPE Downtown Portraits

October 26, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Screening and Panel Discussion

This edition of ART/new york showcases Curt Hoppe and explores his work as photographer, realist painter, and “Charles Bukowski of the downtown art world”—penetrating layers of cultural history to reveal the changing faces of the neighborhood. Both the filmmaker and the artist have longtime connections based on their residence at 98 Bowery, where Hoppe has lived for 43 years.

A panel discussion follows with painter Jane Dickson, filmmaker Charlie Ahearn, and sculptor John Ahearn—all of whom have been subjects for Curt’s paintings and photographs. Hoppe was recently the subject of double exhibitions at Howl! Happening and Frank Bernarducci Gallery. In this program, we see the opening at the Bernarducci Gallery and interviews conducted by artist Brett De Palma, as well as lengthy conversations with Hoppe and De Palma in their studios. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york series, begun in 1979.

Hoppe, a realist painter and photographer, has enjoyed a successful 40-year career driven by meaningful relationships with pioneering downtown creators. Hoppe pays tribute to the core group of artists who offered him friendship and direction when he first arrived in the city in the mid 70s, and who continue to inspire and define him today both as artist and member of a vibrant and enduring creative community.
