SHÖX LUMANIA MANIA
NEW ORDER ILLUSTRÉ
SHÖX LUMANIA MANIA (run time: 1 hour 9 minutes)
This feature includes four interviews with the band Shöx Lumania and a full concert from 1980. An underground favorite of Klaus Nomi, the band was known for changing costumes between every song. It was also electronic-hip-hop pioneer Man Parrish’s first band, and he restored the film’s soundtrack. Filmmaker Merrill Aldighieri collaborated with the band on several experimental films, excerpts of which enhance the visuals. Shöx Lumania was truly a unicorn of the new wave.

NEW ORDER ILLUSTRÉ (run time: 33 minutes)
On September 26, 1980, the band New Order made its New York City debut. This director’s cut of their historic full concert features commentary by bassist Peter Hook. It marks the first recording of the band as they struggled to find their voice following lead singer Ian Curtis’ untimely death. Like an illuminated tome, Aldighieri embellishes her original concert video with experimental graphics, animations, and explorations of painter L.S. Lowry’s work. Lowry, who passed away just a few years before Curtis, created art inspired by the same industrial region of England. New Order’s music brought a new soundscape to the region, much as Lowry baptized its landscapes in art.
The film’s concert setlist features “In a Lonely Place,” “Procession,” “Dreams Never End,” “Mesh,” “Truth,” “Cries and Whispers,” and “Ceremony.”
