Our exhibition shares documentation & visuals from his early years as ‘Tom Trash’ along with a cornucopia of items from his archive illustrating his range of performance and street theater that covers four decades. \nAs a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights\, Tom had four of his plays produced by John Vacarro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. \nFrom the mid ’70s onward\, Tom was part of\, and curated The Full Moon Show\, his monthly lunar celebration in which he and other artists thanked the moon goddess ‘Luna Macaroona’ for shining good fortune upon the world. It rotated among downtown spaces\, then continued in his honor at Howl! Happening for six more years. Our exhibition intentionally opens on the Pink Full Moon weekend! \nUnder the guidance of close friend\, rock manager Jane Friedman\, Murrin began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs\, Max’s Kansas City and Irving Plaza. He appeared in such downtown venues as The Pyramid\, Mudd Club\, 8BC\, Dixon Place\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122 (PSNY)\, Chandalier and Darinka. Since then\, we’ve experienced not only the loss of some of the artists who are subjects in his series\, but significant changes in our daily lives due to the recent viral pandemic. \nCurt has enjoyed a successful 45-year career driven by meaningful relationships with pioneering downtown creators. While many of the artists\, writers\, musicians\, activists\, and art entrepreneurs appearing in the series are now well known\, this project was conceived not as a hall of fame but as a personal homage. Hoppe has been inspired not only by his subject’s youthful achievements but also by their lifelong perseverance and creativity. \n“It all started with Arturo\,” says Hoppe of the late Arturo Vega\, his longtime friend. His larger-than-life painting of Vega\, who was both the inspiration for Howl! Happening and the subject of the first portrait in the Downtown Portraits series\, will be featured in the exhibition. \nWhat started as one large realist painting became a nine-year project for Hoppe. As a longtime downtown New York denizen\, he pays tribute to the core group of artists who welcomed and guided him since the mid 70s\, continuing to inspire him as both an artist and a member of a vibrant creative community. “I wanted the exhibition to be forward-looking\,” Hoppe says. “These artists found a way to survive and to thrive\, and their wisdom continues to have a profound impact on today’s culture. Howl! Happening is pleased to present their individually curated slide shows\, primarily featuring images from that indelible decade\, displayed on opposite walls of the gallery. \nBy 1990\, photo slide shows had become a nearly instant\, affordable way to celebrate queer beauty and militant eroticism within our clubhouses. Group empowerment and reflecting our unity were crucial during those heady years. We railed against censorship and queer phobia\, while AIDS ravaged friends\, family\, and lovers\, because we had no effective medicines to suppress it and a government that vilified us. These photographs gave us visibility and strength. Come see. \nIn addition\, the exhibition will feature a constellation of prints from Alice O’Malley’s slide show\, along with Lola Flash’s vibrant metal portraits of downtown New York LEGENDS and a trio of images from her surmise series. \nLola Flash\, a New Jersey native and longtime figure in New York’s downtown scene\, is an activist who documents themes of race\, age\, and gender. Flash was an active member of ACT UP during the AIDS epidemic in New York City and was notably featured in the 1989 “Kissing Doesn’t Kill” poster. Their art and activism are deeply connected\, fueling a lifelong commitment to visibility and preserving the legacy of LGBTQIA+ communities and communities of color worldwide. \nFlash has worked as a practicing artist and teacher in the US and UK\, with numerous international exhibitions and commissions over the past several decades. Their work is included in significant public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, MoMA\, the Whitney\, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, inviting audiences to not only look but truly see. \nAlice O’Malley worked as a coat checker at the Clit Club in the early ’90s\, a renowned BIPOC-centered lesbian nightclub in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. Unaware of the club’s no-camera policy\, she photographed patrons using high-speed black-and-white film\, often in the corridors of the club’s basement rooms. \nOver the next decade\, O’Malley documented live performances on late-night stages at venues such as the Pyramid\, Jackie 60\, Squeezebox\, Club Casanova\, and other downtown parties. This explosion of queer nightlife occurred against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis\, which devastated the community and claimed the lives of many close friends and creatives. Comrades from the previous night’s parties would find each other in the daylight\, rallying against the government’s failed response to the crisis\, chanting in the streets\, “ACT UP! Fight Back! Fight AIDS!” \nAlice O’Malley is an image maker best known for their portraits of New York’s downtown demimonde. O’Malley’s pictures have been exhibited\, collected\, and published widely. Las Cruces\, New Mexico) is a New York-based artist who has lived in the East Village for the past 18 years. His unique style mines the catalog of art history by infusing classical themes with a colorful sensibility. LaForge works in various media\, including painting\, sculpture\, and drawing\, and employs unorthodox techniques and striking iconic images. \nOften combine-like\, his works are a walking journal of images where ideas are explored and refined. LaForge approaches painting intuitively\, absorbing what surrounds him and working on the canvas with agility and focus—drawing from a fertile inner emotional realm and an extensive painterly vocabulary. \nHis paintings have been shown at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York\, the Friedrichshof Museum in Vienna\, and the Spritmuseum/Absolut Art Collection in Sweden. \nIn 2015\, the artist was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Known for his unique ability to portray horror\, beauty\, and humor in a single moment\, Flloyd is an inimitable presence and longstanding member of NYC’s Lower East Side and East Village art scenes. Among the likes of RuPaul and Lady Bunny\, Flloyd was an early establishing force from the influential Atlanta drag scene that planted its roots on the Pyramid stage. He has presented his groundbreaking performances at several iterations of Wigstock and is prominently featured in the feature-length Berry Shills 1995 production. Archive is pleased to present Harold Shapinsky: Abstract Soul\, an exhibition of his paintings and drawings\, on view from March 23 through May 21\, 2023. The exhibition marks Shapinsky’s first solo exhibition in New York since the 90s and will showcase works spanning from the 1940s to the late 80s\, including many rarely- and never-exhibited works like early figurative paintings and the elegant\, modest-sized paper paintings for which he is best known. Happening is pleased to present an exhibition of portraits and allegorical paintings by Walter Steding that move beyond representation to hidden and poetic unseen worlds. An artist who has worked in many mediums— acting\, writing\, filmmaking\, music\, painting—his personal lexicon creates an alchemical mix projecting these works into a deeper\, more mystical realm.  \nSteding—who was Andy Warhol’s painting assistant and is a virtuosic violinist well known for developing his own electronic instruments and performing solo and with Blondie\, Jim Carroll\, David Byrne\, Chic\, Robert Fripp and Panther Burns—has been painting since he was 5 years old. \nHis portraits go beyond Realism. They fix you with an intense focus from a purely pictorial space\, floating in a neutral background that emphasizes all the more the essence of the sitter\, whether it be the Grand Prior of the Knights Templar\, the Golem\, a jester\, a family portrait\, or a dog\, \nCapturing the essence of his subjects\, he says he is concerned with the world of “non-being” that transmutes his sitters’ physiognomy into a virtual space of pure imagination. The simplicity and straightforward gaze\, reduces the critical “noise” representing external reality and the viewer can experience these people and creatures\, as through an abstract lens of shapes\, colors\, and forms. \nIn his painting\, The Fall of Boaz\, the two pillars of Solomon’s Temple crash and burn in the background while a cast of characters and symbols create a tableau upfront that fuses his esoteric knowledge and understanding of art history. His straightforward manner allows one to by-pass the actual image and artistic style and inhabit the allegorical space of his imaginative world. \nLike an old master painting\, Storming the Capital is all metaphor and stylized emotion and relies on the observers’ interpretations of the meaning that Steding sets forth. Clearly emotional in tone\, it insists on a deeper spiritual meaning portraying issues of life\, death\, love\, virtue\, and justice.  \nIn an interview with Brainard Carey on Yale’s WYBC radio\, Steding calls himself a “recording artist\,” a description that draws upon threads of creativity woven of color and sound. “Both art and music use “harmony\,” says this the multi-talented creator\, “and the vibrations of color and sound permeate and transmute each other.”  \nLike many of the artists and people of the Lower East Side\, Steding’s generation continues to create\, “[We] have something to say about our culture\, our time\, and what’s happening today\,” he says. “There is a chance that art and music can have a voice and here is my voice.” \n  \nImage: Walter Steding “Storming The Capitol”\, Oil on Canvas. To celebrate the release of its 19th issue\, LiVE MAG! will present a selection of readings from The EDGY ISSUE along with a screening of short films by Luigi Cazzaniga\, Sono Kuwayama\, and Marcia Resnick. The event will also highlight artwork in the new issue including a presentation by the painter Brett De Palma. Other guests include Sarah Arvio\, Max Blagg\, and Leah Elimeliah. \n\nAbout LiVE MAG!: LiVE MAG! was born to run at the Bowery Poetry Club. It began when Bob Holman asked Jeff Wright to produce a show. Wright conceived the show as a performance/publication event where publishers\, writers\, and audiences could swap and share. The idea was that by reading\, or staging\, a poem it would be like publishing it. \nJeffrey Cyphers Wright: LiVE MAG! publisher moved to New York City in 1976 and began Hard Press\, publishing poetry postcards and books Wright has written 18 books of poetry including Blue Lyre\, Triple Crown\, Employment of the Apes\, All in All\, and Take Over with a foreword by Allen Ginsberg.  \nIlka Scobie: LiVE MAG! Deputy Editor\, is a native New Yorker\, poet and art critic. She has written extensively for artnet and currently contributes to London’s Artlyst. Recent poems have appeared in Poetry in Performance\, Vanitas\, and here/there. She was also Deputy Editor of Cover Magazine. \nLori Ortiz LiVE MAG! Associate Editor\, Designer/Developer\, holds a BFA from Alfred University has enjoyed an accomplished painting career. She has written arts journalism for NYC and national cultural trade and weekly publications since 2003 and is the author of Disco Dance. He is the author of numerous books\, monographs\, and catalogs on contemporary art and artists. \n Lee Quiñones was born in Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, in 1960\, and raised in New York City’s Lower East Side. One of the originators of street art\, Quiñones started painting on city streets and subway cars in the 1970s. Over the next decade\, he would paint over 100 whole subway cars throughout the MTA system\, to then shift to a studio-based practice. Lee was instrumental in moving street art above the ground when he created the first handball-court mural in 1978. He has presented numerous solo shows and exhibited internationally; his first exhibition was at Galleria La Medusa\, Rome\, in 1979. \n Charlie Ahearn has been involved in hip hop since the late 70s with his Super-8 kung-fu movie The Deadly Art of Survival. With Fred Brathwaite\, he produced and directed the seminal hip-hop film Wild Style\, released worldwide in 1983. Ahearn directed short films such as 5 Grand Masters\, Dirt Style\, and Dancing Industry. His feature-length documentary Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer was released through Oscilloscope Films. Ahearn had a one-person art-exhibition\, Scratch Ecstasy\, at P.P.O.W. and showed silk-screen paintings in the graffiti- and street-art shows Beyond the Streets\, held in L.A. in 2018 and New York in 2019.
