An exclusive selection of large prints will remain on display at the gallery through December 16\, 2023.  \nVangeline will perform an excerpt of her celebrated solo Eternity 123\, which traces the symbolic journey of women’s liberation across time. With this piece\, Vangeline also celebrates the impact of women on the butoh art form—exploring the link between women\, butoh\, and “Cabaret.” \nNUE derives its name from the French word for nude and refers to the divine. With this collaboration\, Alvarez and Vangeline explore the divine feminine prevalent within nature and the female form. Through this photographic study\, Butoh becomes a conduit for this sensual\, ecstatic\, and sacred energy. \n“Vangeline’s work as an artist and advocate for women’s rights is inspiring\,” said Alvarez. “The way she stands in fierce authenticity with equal parts of kindness and strength has given room for an intimate collaboration that shows delicate and powerful femininity.”  \n“Butoh has always had a privileged relationship with photography\,” echoed Vangeline. “The art form was launched in Japan in the early 60s thanks to a stunning book of photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Live performances can be so ephemeral. But Javi‘s work has captured the great intimacy and vulnerability behind Butoh. We are both excited to share these images with the world and build on our collaboration.” \nA series of legacy\, limited edition co-signed prints will be exclusively available during this exhibition\, pre-book release. NUE will culminate in 2024 with a book launch and exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artists \nJavi Alvarez was born in Costa Rica in 1984\, and now lives and works in New York. With an academic background in economics\, he began his artistic journey following an informal but expressive path. A collector\, cinematographer\, explorer\, visionary\, Alvarez doesn’t take photographs — he experiments\, letting the gestures transform his intuitions into works. New\, uncommon\, and alternative elements become pretexts for expressing oneself\, in balance with concept\, people and light. Constantly challenging the rules\, his work finds infinite possibilities of articulation according to the spaces\, situations\, and moods of the moment\, with a modality that is never static or definitive\, but always improvisational\, unstable\, evolving in the time. NUE is Javi’s fifth visual arts exhibit and the first one in Soho. She is the artistic director of the Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute (New York)\, a dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese butoh while carrying it into the twenty-first century. With her all-female dance company\, Vangeline’s socially conscious performances tie together butoh and activism. Vangeline is the founder of the New York Butoh Institute Festival\, which elevates the visibility of women in butoh\, and the festival Queer Butoh. She pioneered the award-winning\, 15-year running program The Dream a Dream Project\, which brings butoh dance to incarcerated men and women at correctional facilities across New York State. Vangeline is a 2022/2023 Gibney Dance in Process residency and the winner of a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award. She is also a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography for Elsewhere; the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance Social Action Award as well as the 2019 Janet Arnold Award from the Society of Antiquaries of London. As solo artists that also show their work together\, Symbiosis tells the story of an ongoing\, creative conversation between two artists and their powerful\, evocative work. (Please see new gallery hours above.) \nLinda Lundgren’s sweeping\, large-scale paintings bow to the dynamics in nature\, and are about color\, while using layers of oil paint mixed with tempera and sometimes bee’s wax. She uses a palette knife to create intricate details that build into new\, larger surfaces of vibrant abstract shapes. \nSverre Lundgren is known for his brutalist wooden sculptures made from densely grown “Norrlandsfura” (Swedish fir wood) colored with black iron oxide\, tempera\, linseed oil and tar. The tight knit group included a brother and sister\, husband and wife\, and multiple sets of close friends and roommates. Watchface was Chazz Dean\, Kurt Fulton\, Kim X Knowlton\, Melanie Monios\, Iris Rose\, James Siena\, and Maggie Siena. \nThe name Watchface referred both to the act of seeing and to the measurement of time. Their shows always displayed an awareness of time as an organizing principle of structure\, and the content of their strong visual presentation of dense\, rhythmic choreography sprang from observation of human behavior in all levels of society. The performer was the primary visual element with little emphasis on the theatrical devices of lighting\, setting\, or costume\, which made the pieces easily adaptable to many different spaces and audiences.  \nWatchface was composed of diverse personalities with strengths in a wide range of disciplines: dance\, theater\, two- and three-dimensional art\, graphics\, music\, and writing. In spite of the diversity in form\, content\, and media in their work\, the Watchface identity was clearly evident throughout: an irreverent sense of humor combined with a sincere investigation for the kernel of truth applied to subjects as varied as madness\, family violence\, undesirable personal habits\, and shopping at Woolworth’s.   \nTheir work began in East Village clubs like the Pyramid\, 8BC\, and Darinka\, but later included performance spaces like Franklin Furnace\, PS 122\, and La MaMa. They also performed at the ICA in London\, MOCA in Los Angeles\, and the Alley Theatre in Houston. \nWatchface disbanded in the fall of 1990 but was revived by three of its members for one more show the following summer – 2000 Questions at Serious Fun! at Lincoln Center. It was at the Pyramid\, where Brian developed his Hattie Hathaway alter ego. A name both derived from his grandmother Hattie\, whose name he found embroidered on an old suitcase after her death\, and for Nancy Kulp’s Miss Jane Hathaway character on the 1960s CBS sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies.  \n \n  \nBrian / Hattie expanded his work both as a producer and a performer throughout the 80s and 90s\, and was a founding member of the inventive musician/artists’ band 3 Teens Kill Four (3TK4)\, an early Pyramid mainstay that most often featured Brian\, Jesse Hultberg\, Julie Hair\, Doug Bressler\, and\, in their early years\, David Wojnarowicz. The group performed in the 1980s\, and then again in the 2010s. He also joined the Blacklips Performance Cult after inviting the group to perform at the Pyramid. In the 90s\, Brian co-produced Jackie 60\, a legendary Tuesday night party held weekly at the Meatpacking District dive club Mother. Following Mother’s closure in 2000\, Brian continued his lifelong love of the written word\, music\, and performance through the following decades at venues including Rapture Café\, the Three Penny Opera revival at Studio 54\, Club Cumming\, and the annual Howl! Festival.  \nBrian Butterick {Hattie Hathaway} and all they loved chronologically traces Butterick’s life\, beginning with a showcase of their 1970s poetry and a portrayal of early friendships with writers in New York City and Provincetown. Among the most significant of these relationships was Brian’s deep romance and creative collaboration with the artist David Wojnarowicz\, which continued from the late ‘70s into the early 1980s.  \nUsing photographs\, graphics\, flyers\, video\, posters\, press\, and a curated soundtrack\, The Pyramid Years are represented in the main gallery of Howl! Arts / Howl! Archive. The era is presented in two sections\, with 1981 – 1986 outlined in a traditional step pyramid shape\, and 1987 – 1995 defined by the triangular pyramid shape which was adopted by the Pyramid during those years. Loretta\, his first drag persona is featured. The two sections are split by a showcase of 3 Teens Kill 4. Throughout this gallery\, a projection of photos and videos will be displayed\, including interviews and videos of Brian with 3TK4\, Blacklips\, Jackie 60\, and the Gay-B-C’s series\, footage of the Pyramid\, and excerpts from various films.  The chronological ‘slide shows’ shared at Brian’s memorial will be on rotation. \nIn the rear gallery\, Brian’s 1990s participation with Blacklips Performance Cult and Jackie 60 is illustrated via printed enlargements\, invitations\, posters\, photos\, and clothing. Vitrines showcase open diaries\, letters\, and rare publications from Brian’s personal collection\, and an accompanying soundtrack projects Butterick’s words and related music. Our “Wall of Hattie”\, is composed of dozens of eye-popping\, wig-raising\, and colorful photos of Hattie Hathaway at countless events throughout their life.  \nLoosely re-imagining Brian’s living space in the second half of the back gallery is The Apartment. Here\, a large monitor projects journal entries and archival imagery ranging from the 1970s to the 2000s\, and a nearby metal file cabinet replicates the one in which Butterick kept his trove of nightlife and personal papers. At HAHA\, this cabinet includes folders containing copies of selected writings\, articles\, interviews and scripts that visitors can peruse. \nThroughout his life\, Brian saw openings\, found possibilities\, and created opportunities for countless artists. Arts/Howl! Archive is pleased to present Harold Shapinsky: Abstract Soul\, an exhibition of his paintings and drawings\, on view from March 23 through May 21\, 2023. The exhibition marks Shapinsky’s first solo exhibition in New York since the 90s and will showcase works spanning from the 1940s to the late 80s\, including many rarely- and never-exhibited works like early figurative paintings and the elegant\, modest-sized paper paintings for which he is best known. Together the paintings in the exhibition illuminate the remarkable story of the artist’s long-overlooked practice in New York and his late career rise to recognition as a significant Abstract Expressionist. \nA native New Yorker\, Shapinsky was born in Brooklyn in 1925 and painted for the majority of his career with little public recognition. He spent much of his life in the East Village where he studied at Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell’s school The Subject of An Artist. Despite his proximity to celebrated Abstract Expressionists of the same generation and the recognition of his peers\, Shapinsky did not garner the attention of the art world. He possessed an intensity that was reflected both in his work and in his distaste for the politics of the commercial art world\, and so while the movement flourished around him\, Shapinsky worked in obscurity in his small Lower East Side apartment with his wife Kate. He painted in bold brush strokes on thick paper\, which was the only medium that he could both afford and find room to store. \nShapinsky’s talent would likely have continued to go unrecognized if not for Akumal Ramachander\, an English professor and arts publicist from India who encountered Shapinsky’s son David at the University of Chicago. David presented images of his father’s work to Ramachander upon learning of his work promoting under-recognized artists\, and Ramachander immediately vowed to champion Shapinsky’s work.  \nRamachander began promoting Shapinsky in New York\, but the tide of Abstract Expressionism had receded in the United States and he had limited luck. In the meantime\, he befriended the artist and began advocating for Shapinsky in London. In the Spring of 1985\, Ramachander persuaded James Mayer to give Shapinsky a show at his gallery that opened on Shapinsky’s 60th birthday to great acclaim. More exhibitions in Europe and eventually in the U.S. followed\, as well as a documentary on Channel 4 (UK)\, an article in the Observer by Salman Rushdie\, and a 16 page New Yorker feature by Lawrence Weschler. \nToday\, the art and story of Harold Shapinsky has joined the public consciousness\, and Shapinsky was awarded recognition and financial freedom in his later years of life. The exhibition runs from November 9 to 20\, 2022 at Howl Arts / Howl Archive\, 250 Bowery\, 2nd floor\, New York City. \nThere were no funerals. No memorials. No public gatherings to mourn those killed by Russia’s relentless attacks on the port city of Mariupol that became a symbol of Ukraine’s ferocious resistance. The mass grave trenches told the story of a city under siege. \nThe world would have seen none of this\, would have seen next to nothing at all from Mariupol as a city under siege\, if it wasn’t for Mstyslav Chernov and Evgeniy Maloletka\, the Associated Press team who race into the city when the invasion began and stayed long after it had become one of the most dangerous places on Earth. For more than two weeks\, they were the only international media in the city\, and the only journalists able to transmit video and still photos to the outside world. \nMoscow hated their work. The Russian embassy in London tweeted images of AP photos with the word “Fake” over them in red text. A top Russian diplomat held up copies of photos from the maternity hospital at a U.N. Security Council meeting\, insisting they were phony. But their photographs and the people who they met speak to what happened in Mariupol. \n\nEvgeniy Maloletka is a Ukrainian war photographer journalist and filmmaker\, who has been covering the war in Ukraine since 2014. He has also covered the Euromaidan Revolution\, the protests in Belarus\, the Nagorno-Karabakh war and the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine. In her first year in New York she created an installation for the pivotal Times Square Show\, followed by a guerrilla installation with David Wojnarowicz that included bloody cow bones in the stairwell of the Leo Castelli gallery. She also worked with Lucy Lippard and others to create P.A.D.D – the pre-digital Political Art Documentation and Distribution archive for political art. \nJulie began experimenting with music in the 1980s with the art rock band 3 TEENS KILL 4 and decided that this form of expression would work for her\, having the added benefit of not filling up her tiny East Village apartment. She continued to create and play music with diverse outfits like anarcho-post-punk marching band\, The Hungry March Band and Glen Branca. She currently plays with and writes for Isolation Society and Female Genius and others and makes art for art’s sake\, as well as videos\, props and merch for her projects.  \nAbout Marnie Jaffe \n \nMarnie Jaffe (nee Greenholz) has been involved in the New York City and Brooklyn art community since 1978\, when she moved to attend graduate film school at NYU. She collaborated with dancers and musicians designing multi-projector slide installations at clubs and art venues including the Kitchen\, The Collective for Living Cinema\, Danceteria\, The Pyramid Club and Limelight. From 1980 until 1988 she played bass and sang with the alternative (noise) band Live Skull. She co-wrote songs for the band and released albums on the labels Homestead and Caroline Records. \nIn 1993 she moved to Cincinnati and had her daughter Noa. She also became the founding member/bass player of The Fairmount Girls and put out the record Seven seconds from anywhere\, as well as winning best local band for 2 years in a row from the Cincinnati Enquirer. \nShe received her MFA in Performance and Interdisciplinary Media in the Arts (PIMA) from Brooklyn College in 2017 and along with artist/musician Julie Hair\, she started the art rock band Female Genius. She currently continues to work as a teaching artist and is recognized as a creative force. \nAbout Nikki D’Agostino \n \nNikki D’Agostino is an award-winning “wildly creative” composer\, musician\, conductor\, educator\, and multi-disciplinary artist\, Nikki D’Agostino has both performed and had her works performed nationally and internationally. She received her B.A. from The University of North Texas in 2004 after studying with Joseph Klein\, Phil Winsor\, and Joseph “Butch” Rovan\, before pursuing her M.M. in Music Composition (2008) at CUNY Brooklyn College to study with Amnon Wolman and George Brunner. \nAs an educator\, Ms. D’Agostino has given lectures on topics ranging from musicology to performance practice as well as holding a position as an Adjunct Professor at CUNY New York City College of Technology in the Emerging Media program. Compositionally\, Nikki is currently focused on publishing a book of scores and recording an album of works using a notation system she developed to allow both performer and composer/conductor creative control. His first job was assisting Richard Bernstein\, the artist responsible for the covers of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. He was born in Manhattan\, grew up in Westchester\, New York\, and earned his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Grossman moved to New York City in 1976\, taking up residency at the Hotel Chelsea. Working as a freelancer by day\, he found his way to Warhol’s Factory on Union Square\, where he was regarded as an insider. During that same period\, he became a regular presence while documenting the scene at CBGB and eventually the Mudd Club. Grossman’s reputation as a contributing photographer to both major publications and underground journals was soon well established. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions\, catalogs\, and films. His earliest contributions to film include The Radiant Child\, about Jean-Michel Basquiat; the William Burroughs documentary A Man Within; and the No-Wave documentary Blank City. Grossman was the official photographer for Glenn O’Brien’s public-access TV Party and made a cameo in the film Downtown 81. His work is included in the documentary Fifteen Minutes Eternal\, celebrating the Andy Warhol Museum’s 20th anniversary; the 2017 award-winning documentary Basquiat: Rage to Riches; and filmmaker Sara Driver’s 2018 release\, Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Grossman collaborated with Richard Prince on the book Cowboy\, Shepard Fairey on the documentary Obey Giant\, Debbie Harry on her fashion collection with Obey\, and Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons.
