Many of these materials — including recorded talks not only with dozens of legendary drag queens\, but also\, among others\, bell hooks\, Sandra Bernhard\, Fran Lebowitz\, and Quentin Crisp — have been newly digitized and restored. It offers a glimpse into the complicated process of chronicling New York’s legendary drag scene and the artists who shaped it — all during a time which\, in spite of its provocative spirit\, now seems almost quaint. \nPublished in 1996\, “DQNY” was years\, if not decades\, ahead of its time: the first trade paperback from a major publisher to celebrate the history\, culture\, lives and careers of the golden age of New York’s riotous drag scene. Framed (somewhat cheekily) as a field guide\, it devotes much of its time to the long\, hidden history of drag in New York and its persistent interrogation of the prevailing culture\, mores and norms. The book then concludes with nearly thirty iconic profiles\, telling the creation stories of such drag legends as Lady Bunny\, Lypsinka\, Charles Busch\, Sherry Vine\, Candis Cayne\, Mona Foot\, Hattie Hathaway\, Mistress Formika\, Tabboo!\, Miss Understood\, Afrodite\, Dolores\, Sweetie and many more. Almost every story is accompanied by a unique studio portrait by photographer Brooke Williams. \n“The Drag Queens of New York was meant to be more than just a snapshot. It was a genuine effort to capture the magic and creativity of the artists who made the scene an unforgettable explosion of color\, wit\, lunacy and defiance.” says Fleisher. “Like the original book\, DQNY30 is a fresh celebration of that unique moment as well as of the performers\, audiences\, connoisseurs\, historians\, fans and all those who contributed their wisdom\, grit and spirit – both on stage and off. It was a side-hustle that took on a life of its own.” \nThe exhibition promises a journey through years of drag culture\, using images\, audio\, and ephemera from Fleisher’s original sessions\, as well as a peek at the sometimes chaotic process of making the book itself. Copies of the original book — long out of print\, but widely cherished — will be available for reference during the show. \nAll photos by Brooke Williams\, unless noted otherwise. \n\nAuthor’s Statement\nThe Drag Queens of New York: An Illustrated Field Guide was published in 1996. In 1994\, when I signed with Riverhead Books (“The same imprint as Harold Bloom!” I crowed\, pretentiously)\, I was just a measly couple of years into my dream of becoming a nightclub singer — a career that\, at that stage\, was yielding no meaningful “scratch”. So\, like most young hopefuls in NYC\, doing their best impressions of Joseph Campbell’s hero\, I worked a bunch of side-hustles in order to fund my journey. I was a waiter\, writer\, retoucher\, actor\, SAT tutor and personal assistant to the truly psychotic wife of an aging writer whom I revered. And yet: Not enough scratch. Not enough flexibility. So — after a boozy night recounting my adventures exploring the bonkers drag scene in my new “edgy” East Village neighborhood — when an editor I knew offered me a $20\,000 advance to write a book about it\, I truly believed I had hit some kind of cosmic jackpot. That number seemed impossibly large and my eyes bulged with visions of all the studio time I could buy with it. Ha! How paltry it would turn out to be\, though\, when stretched out over two years\, in three\, small (taxable!) installments. To say nothing of how much I’d spend just chasing the book: research\, travel\, tickets\, covers\, minimums\, meals\, interns\, Lou Reed charging $500 to quote four lines from Walk on the Wild Side. (In context!) My side-hustle needed a side-hustle.\n \nThe game changed\, though\, when I found myself starting to care — deeply — about this strange\, new gig and the people I was writing about; folks with whom\, it seemed\, I was starting to fall in love. As the challenge of doing justice to the uncanny beauty of their demimonde truly set in\, however\, I buckled. The history\, culture\, legend\, scenes\, stories and struggles of this enchanted world revealed themselves to me like the curtain rising on Tosca at the Met: overwhelming. To capture it all? Impossible. To punt? Shameful. And this during a time which\, for all of its high-octane\, rapid-fire changes\, now seems rather quaint. The internet was barely a thing: no smart phones\, text chains or social networks. Research happened in libraries\, correspondence in the mail; messages were left on machines and interviews were recorded on cassettes. Cassettes! Even with the help of friends and interns\, I was flailing in a stew of missed deadlines\, untested writing skills\, reams of transcripts and a growing pile of unfulfilled ambitions for what I had hoped to achieve — and what I could offer these beautiful people who were sharing their stories with me.\n \nI turned to (among other things) self-help: those “how to write a book” books\, a couple of which I myself had written during my time side-hustling test-prep and other “educational subjects”. While browsing The Strand (Google it)\, I came upon a newcomer to the category: Bird by Bird\, by Anne Lamott — now a beloved staple of the “how to” genre. Her solution to the problem of how to write? To write! Oh great. But how? Well\, famously\, she recalls her brother’s meltdown at having to finish a report on birds which he had months to complete. Dad saves the day by offering him the bromide that gives the book its title: “Bird by bird\, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.” So elegant. So avuncular. And at $13.99\, a bargain. So\, I would do the same thing; I would take it…queen by queen. And just like that\, I saw “DQNY” for what it really wanted to be: a bird guide in its own right. And why not? After all\, just like Lamott’s\, my subjects sported plumage and camouflage\, observed peculiar social hierarchies and partook in unique rituals and strategies for survival. Their habitat — downtown New York during the AIDS crisis — was surely no less wild and unforgiving than that of any of Lamott’s feathered friends. Approaching the scene as a kind of docent\, introducing newbies (myself included) to a mysterious ecosystem inhabited by exotic fauna cracked open the whole enterprise for me and\, now\, here we are.\n \nWould I take that approach today? Could I? Is this a side anyone should hustle? Drag is simply not what it used to be\, and neither is the world. Given current sensitivities\, it’s probably best for anyone who writes about drag to\, um\, do drag — as have the likes of Charles Busch\, RuPaul and Linda Simpson. Linda’s fabulous Drag Explosion is a towering tribute to the same scene as my book\, arguably better. After all\, she’s been making the scene herself the whole time. As playfully affectionate as my “field guide” trope was meant to be (and it was!) its cheeky hint of objectification would likely be unacceptable now\, at least coming from a civilian\, even a devoutly queer one. Furthermore\, what drag means has changed fundamentally. The scene that fascinated me was untamed\, chaotic\, debauched\, defiant and not for general consumption. There was no panel of judges. A show at Pyramid or Boy Bar or Tunnel or Jackie 60 was just for us. In that room. On that night. The lunacy was bespoke: it wasn’t for the internet\, posterity or the star-maker machinery. Sure\, it was about the star-maker machinery. But it reminded us that life could be sexy\, smart\, sleazy and hilarious in spite of the outside world. Not because of it. Or (worse yet) for it. It felt like resistance.\n \nDrag understands\, celebrates and leverages pop culture as pungently as any creative movement ever has. And\, at its best\, it’s also an antidote to it. Writing DQNY taught me that drag is at least as much about class as it is about gender. Gender (such as it is) may be the grammar\, but the meaning has always been that the “have-nots” have way more fun than the “haves”; the essence of most underground scenes. Now\, thanks to the ride of the Drag-Industrial Complex\, queens are routinely counted among the “haves”. It’s no longer quite the same brand of fun — at least not as we see it on TV\, where drag has been adjusted to fit a much wider audience with much less…to lose. Thankfully\, here in NYC\, there remains an uncooperative drag scene in bars and clubs from the Village to Bushwick\, where dominant/corporate culture is still the prime target\, even as that culture scoops up and machine-tools the occasional queen for global distribution. The promise of fame and fortune — once the butt of the joke — hangs in the air differently at drag shows now\, to be sure.\n \nBut in some of those rooms\, on some of those nights\, if we put down our phones\, the show can still be…just for us.\n\n— Julian Fleisher | October\, 2025

In Conversations with Gay Elders\, filmmaker David Weissman (The Cockettes\, We Were Here) fostered a cross-generational collaboration. He worked with gay men in their 20s and 30s to profile gay men in their 70s and 80s whose journeys of self-discovery precede the era of Stonewall and gay liberation. Conversations with Gay Elders explores how these men navigated being “different” long before there was any social or political context for a positive LGBT self-image. \nReview by Sur Rodney Sur\, 2019:\n“Yesterday\, I attended a screening of a filmed interview with Eugene N. Fedorko wherein he talked about growing up in the 40s and 50s and his discovering his homosexual proclivities and how it affected his life. It was certainly one of the most spectacular interviews I’ve been witness to. I met Gene years ago as he was part of a mutual circle of acquaintances and always respected as one of the most gracious and generous members of our gay community. The interview was one of a series of four elders interviewed by filmmaker David Weissman detailing their lives exposing all the horrors and joys of life pre- and post-Stonewall. Archive is pleased to present Summer Time by Helen Oliver Adelson\, featuring paintings made within the last three years. In her vivid portraits\, intimate nudes\, and townscapes\, she delves below the surface of her subjects to uncover inner mysteries\, emotions\, and tensions.  \nOliver’s gestural line and the deeply felt presence of the sitter create “images [that] vacillate between the hallucinatory\, bordering on Surrealism\, and a raw pragmatic quality that makes them appear utterly truthful\,” says David Ebony. Her joyous\, bohemian character imbues her paintings with an imaginative inner narrative\, and style that goes beyond any affiliations to contemporary art trends\, schools\, or movements. An air of whimsy permeates some of her portraits\, while languid nudes stare frankly into the viewer. \nSince the late 70s\, Helen Oliver has been an integral part of the artistic and performance-art scene of the Lower East Side\, tapping into the personalities of the vanguard and rendering oil paintings of artists\, musicians\, filmmakers\, and writers including John Kelly\, Hapi Phace\, Penny Arcade\, Lenny Kaye\, Louie Cartwright\, Kembra Pfahler\, Samoa\, and Brian Damage. She is also well known for her stage-set design\, especially for her brother Edgar Oliver’s plays\, many of which premiered at La MaMa. \nShe was a founder of Pompeii Gallery on 10th Street (and later Forsyth Street) in New York City in the mid 1980s. She has exhibited in New York\, Paris\, and Lucerne\, and has painted three rooms at the Carlton Arms Hotel. Originally from Savannah\, Georgia\, she moved to New York City in the late 1970s after studying in Paris and receiving a B.A. from George Washington University in Washington D.C. Experienced performers\, they are equally at home playing in a nightclub or an art gallery\, \nThe trio of multi-instrumentalists Julie Hair\, Marnie Jaffe\, Nikki D’Agostino have recently joined forces with New York artist Janice Sloane on guitar. With this collaboration\, Alvarez and Vangeline explore the divine feminine prevalent within nature and the female form. Through this photographic study\, Butoh becomes a conduit for this sensual\, ecstatic\, and sacred energy. \n“Vangeline’s work as an artist and advocate for women’s rights is inspiring\,” said Alvarez. “The way she stands in fierce authenticity with equal parts of kindness and strength has given room for an intimate collaboration that shows delicate and powerful femininity.”  \n“Butoh has always had a privileged relationship with photography\,” echoed Vangeline. “The art form was launched in Japan in the early 60s thanks to a stunning book of photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Live performances can be so ephemeral. But Javi‘s work has captured the great intimacy and vulnerability behind Butoh. We are both excited to share these images with the world and build on our collaboration.” \nA series of legacy\, limited edition co-signed prints will be exclusively available during this exhibition\, pre-book release. Vangeline is the founder of the New York Butoh Institute Festival\, which elevates the visibility of women in butoh\, and the festival Queer Butoh. She pioneered the award-winning\, 15-year running program The Dream a Dream Project\, which brings butoh dance to incarcerated men and women at correctional facilities across New York State. Vangeline is a 2022/2023 Gibney Dance in Process residency and the winner of a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award. She is also a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography for Elsewhere; the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance Social Action Award as well as the 2019 Janet Arnold Award from the Society of Antiquaries of London. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book: Butoh: Cradling Empty Space\, which explores the intersection of butoh and neuroscience. As solo artists that also show their work together\, Symbiosis tells the story of an ongoing\, creative conversation between two artists and their powerful\, evocative work. The exhibition continues through November 19th at HA/HA\, 250 Bowery\, 2nd floor. (Please see new gallery hours above.) \nLinda Lundgren’s sweeping\, large-scale paintings bow to the dynamics in nature\, and are about color\, while using layers of oil paint mixed with tempera and sometimes bee’s wax. She uses a palette knife to create intricate details that build into new\, larger surfaces of vibrant abstract shapes. \nSverre Lundgren is known for his brutalist wooden sculptures made from densely grown “Norrlandsfura” (Swedish fir wood) colored with black iron oxide\, tempera\, linseed oil and tar. Archive is pleased to present a performance by Rimbaud Hattie\, an experimental/investigational art song collective involving innovative chanteuse and actress Heather Litteer\, genre-defying performance artist John Kelly\, and Julie Hair and Doug Bressler\, two members of the pivotal 80’s art rock band 3 Teens Kill 4. \nPlaying original songs and covers by Brian Butterick\, John Kelly\, 3 Teens Kill 4\, Destructo\, and Oscar Wilde\, Rimbaud Hattie was formed out of the deep love for Brian Butterick\, also known as Hattie Hathaway whose drag persona was born at the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge. Each of the four artists in this band had creative relationships with Brian\, whether it was music\, poetry\, theatre\, or performance and they share a mission to keep the spirit of Hattie alive through an ongoing collaboration of music and performance. \nThe performance compliments the current exhibition Brian Butterick {Hattie Hathaway} and all they loved which is on view at Howl! Arts/Howl! Archive through July 30th.

Since Watchface did much of its early work at the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge\, it complements the current major exhibition Brian Butterick (Hattie Hathaway) and all they loved\, which continues in the main gallery through July 30th.  \nWatchface by Mark Babushkin\nWatchface was a seven-member performance collective\, based in New York City\, who performed together in various combinations\, primarily in the East Village\, from February 1983 to July 1991—eventually creating 40 different works. The tight knit group included a brother and sister\, husband and wife\, and multiple sets of close friends and roommates. Watchface was Chazz Dean\, Kurt Fulton\, Kim X Knowlton\, Melanie Monios\, Iris Rose\, James Siena\, and Maggie Siena. \nThe name Watchface referred both to the act of seeing and to the measurement of time. Their shows always displayed an awareness of time as an organizing principle of structure\, and the content of their strong visual presentation of dense\, rhythmic choreography sprang from observation of human behavior in all levels of society. The performer was the primary visual element with little emphasis on the theatrical devices of lighting\, setting\, or costume\, which made the pieces easily adaptable to many different spaces and audiences.  \nWatchface was composed of diverse personalities with strengths in a wide range of disciplines: dance\, theater\, two- and three-dimensional art\, graphics\, music\, and writing. In spite of the diversity in form\, content\, and media in their work\, the Watchface identity was clearly evident throughout: an irreverent sense of humor combined with a sincere investigation for the kernel of truth applied to subjects as varied as madness\, family violence\, undesirable personal habits\, and shopping at Woolworth’s.   \nTheir work began in East Village clubs like the Pyramid\, 8BC\, and Darinka\, but later included performance spaces like Franklin Furnace\, PS 122\, and La MaMa. They also performed at the ICA in London\, MOCA in Los Angeles\, and the Alley Theatre in Houston. \nWatchface disbanded in the fall of 1990 but was revived by three of its members for one more show the following summer – 2000 Questions at Serious Fun! at Lincoln Center. All seven members reunited for an evening of performance at Dixon Place on April 1\, 2016\, to celebrate Dixon Places 30th anniversary and the completion and launch of Watchface’s archival website. \nImage: Sodomite Warriors. A publication with additional content will be published later in the year alongside a Brian Butterick / Hattie Hathaway portal on www.howlarts.org.  \n        \n            \n		\n\n                \n						\n						\n					\n                        ►\n                        Explore 3D Space			\n                    \n                \n                \n                	Brian Butterick {Hattie Hathaway} and all they loved\n				\n			\n		\n\nButterick first became well known in the 1980s for booking and later managing the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge\, a venue that melded the performing arts with music and drag\, and which helped define the East Village drag\, gay\, punk\, and art scenes in the 80s. It was at the Pyramid\, where Brian developed his Hattie Hathaway alter ego. A name both derived from his grandmother Hattie\, whose name he found embroidered on an old suitcase after her death\, and for Nancy Kulp’s Miss Jane Hathaway character on the 1960s CBS sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies.  \n                       \n  \nBrian / Hattie expanded his work both as a producer and a performer throughout the 80s and 90s\, and was a founding member of the inventive musician/artists’ band 3 Teens Kill Four (3TK4)\, an early Pyramid mainstay that most often featured Brian\, Jesse Hultberg\, Julie Hair\, Doug Bressler\, and\, in their early years\, David Wojnarowicz. The group performed in the 1980s\, and then again in the 2010s. He also joined the Blacklips Performance Cult after inviting the group to perform at the Pyramid. In the 90s\, Brian co-produced Jackie 60\, a legendary Tuesday night party held weekly at the Meatpacking District dive club Mother. Following Mother’s closure in 2000\, Brian continued his lifelong love of the written word\, music\, and performance through the following decades at venues including Rapture Café\, the Three Penny Opera revival at Studio 54\, Club Cumming\, and the annual Howl! Festival.  \nBrian Butterick {Hattie Hathaway} and all they loved chronologically traces Butterick’s life\, beginning with a showcase of their 1970s poetry and a portrayal of early friendships with writers in New York City and Provincetown. Among the most significant of these relationships was Brian’s deep romance and creative collaboration with the artist David Wojnarowicz\, which continued from the late ‘70s into the early 1980s.  \nUsing photographs\, graphics\, flyers\, video\, posters\, press\, and a curated soundtrack\, The Pyramid Years are represented in the main gallery of Howl! Arts / Howl! Archive. The era is presented in two sections\, with 1981 – 1986 outlined in a traditional step pyramid shape\, and 1987 – 1995 defined by the triangular pyramid shape which was adopted by the Pyramid during those years. Loretta\, his first drag persona is featured. The two sections are split by a showcase of 3 Teens Kill 4. Throughout this gallery\, a projection of photos and videos will be displayed\, including interviews and videos of Brian with 3TK4\, Blacklips\, Jackie 60\, and the Gay-B-C’s series\, footage of the Pyramid\, and excerpts from various films.  The chronological ‘slide shows’ shared at Brian’s memorial will be on rotation. \nIn the rear gallery\, Brian’s 1990s participation with Blacklips Performance Cult and Jackie 60 is illustrated via printed enlargements\, invitations\, posters\, photos\, and clothing. Vitrines showcase open diaries\, letters\, and rare publications from Brian’s personal collection\, and an accompanying soundtrack projects Butterick’s words and related music. Our “Wall of Hattie”\, is composed of dozens of eye-popping\, wig-raising\, and colorful photos of Hattie Hathaway at countless events throughout their life.  \nLoosely re-imagining Brian’s living space in the second half of the back gallery is The Apartment. Here\, a large monitor projects journal entries and archival imagery ranging from the 1970s to the 2000s\, and a nearby metal file cabinet replicates the one in which Butterick kept his trove of nightlife and personal papers. At HAHA\, this cabinet includes folders containing copies of selected writings\, articles\, interviews and scripts that visitors can peruse. \nThroughout his life\, Brian saw openings\, found possibilities\, and created opportunities for countless artists. His generosity\, coupled with his keen economy of words\, wry humor\, and humble intellect sustain his legacy as a fierce creative force in the East Village community. Guitarist and Composer Pat Irwin is joined by violinist Jonathan Zalben and cellist Josh Wise. \nThe performance will be held on three consecutive dates. Friday\, May 19 and Saturday\, May\, 20 at 7:30 PM and Sunday\, May 21 at 2:00 PM. Directly following Sunday’s performance at 3:00 PM Howl will host a celebration for the current exhibition Harold Shapinsky: Abstract Soul on the anniversary of the artist’s birthday (May 21\, 1925). \n
