SUMMARY:Happy Birthday Allen Ginsberg!
DESCRIPTION:Everything is holy! everybody’s holy! everywhere is holy! everyday is in eternity! Everyman’s an angel! —Allen Ginsberg \nHowl! Happening is delighted to present a 2019 birthday celebration for Allen Ginsberg\, the grandfather of Beatific free expression and the namesake of our gallery. Taking inspiration from Allen who was a lifelong spokesperson for peace and justice\, we are not afraid to speak up and support artists and audiences by providing a forum to join in the creative process and make their voices heard. \nJoin us from 2pm for an afternoon of poetry\, performances\, film and festivities as we toast to another year of the legacy of Allen Ginsberg– and take a Howl! fortune cookie with you for your onward journey! \nAlongside the poets and writers will be performances by downtown ensemble Bear 54\, who formed under the energetic dome created by Arthur Russell and Allen Ginsberg as all members were his friends and collaborators in the 1980’s in New York. Founding members include Ernie Brooks bass and vocals\,  Joyce Bowden vocals and acoustic guitar\, Peter Zummo trombone\, keyboard and vocals\, and Billy Ficca drums. \nFeaturing: \nAnne Waldman \nBob Holman \nBob Rosenthal \nDavid Henderson \nEd Sanders \nFab 5 Freddy \nHelixx C. Armageddon \nHettie Jones \nLuc Sante \nMaggie Dubris \nPamela Sneed \nPuma Perl \n  \nAlso featuring video footage of the 1965 Albert Hall reading by Allen Ginsberg and other Beat icons. \nI saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness\, starving hysterical naked\,  dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix\,  angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night…. —Allen Ginsberg

SUMMARY:Dean Lance: Mourn The Dead\, Fight Like Hell For The Living
DESCRIPTION:Lance is a Brooklyn-born video and visual artist whose work has been broadcast on PBS and screened at film festivals\, universities\, and museums internationally including MoMA\, MoCA\, and the New Museum\, He earned his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 1980 and incorporates his training in animation into his imagery\, often composing his first draft through the viewfinder of a Polaroid. \nAs a lifelong New Yorker\, his work captures and celebrates the passion\, enthusiasm\, and energy of his fellow activists and the quest for basic human rights—documenting and creating a first-hand record of events that mark pivotal moments that might otherwise be forgotten. His longtime colleague Penny Arcade describes him as having “drawn his way through the AIDS crisis.” A veteran member of ACT UP’s DIVA TV (as in those “damned interfering video activists”)\, his award-winning video\, A Hard Reign’s Gonna Fall (Best Music Video\, Atlanta Film and Video Festival\, 1991) has been shown throughout the United States and internationally.
