Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to announce Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat\, a group exhibition focusing on the artists and scene around Jean-Michel Basquiat’s teen-aged\, pre-fame years. Curated by Howl! Happening\, Sara Driver\, Carlo McCormick\, and Mary-Ann Monforton\, Zeitgeist complements and amplifies the theatrical release of Sara Driver’s film BOOM FOR REAL The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat from Magnolia Pictures. The film premieres on May 11th at IFC\, New York. \nThe period covered in the exhibition and film tells the story of Jean-Michel’s early work\, peers\, and creative community in gritty\, pre-AIDS\, downtown New York—before the rise of the 80s art and real estate juggernaut. It was a time when decay\, drugs\, and dissolution fueled a boom in creativity where the definition of fame\, success\, and power was not based on money\, Facebook likes\, and self-promotion. For these creators\, to be a penniless published poet or a musician gigging at CBs was the height of success. In the rawness of the work\, the focus on street art and graffiti\, and the experimentation and cross-pollination of styles and disciplines\, the era has become a flash point for younger generations seeking to learn about and understand the authenticity\, closeness\, and community expressed in the work of the artists in Zeitgeist. \nThe exhibition—and a series of special events—illuminate Basquiat’s work and that of his friends and other artists\, writers\, filmmakers\, and musicians who emerged from that scene\, including: \nAlexis Adler\, Charlie Ahearn\, Ted Barron\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Philippe Bordaz\, Robert Carrithers\, Henry Chalfant\, Brett De Palma\, Vivienne Dick\, Jane Dickson\, Al Diaz\, Barbara Ess\, Coleen Fitzgibbon\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Futura\, Robert Goldman aka Bobby G\, Godlis\, Nan Goldin\, Richard\, Hambleton\, Michael Holman\, Becky Howland\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland\, Jim Jarmusch\, Justen\, Ladda\, Ann Messner\, Mary-Ann Monforton\, James Nares\, Glenn O’Brien\, Franc Palaia\, Lee Quiñones\, Walter Robinson\, Christy Rupp\, Luc Sante\, Kenny Scharf\, Paul Tschinkel\, Robin Winters\, and Bob Gruen. \nSpecial events will include: \n\nA panel discussion featuring Alexis Adler\, Felice Rosser\, Lee Quiñones\, Al Diaz\, and more\nA screening of Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary Burroughs: The Movie from the Criterion Collection\nAn evening of films featuring an experimental film by Basquiat’s bandmate Michael Holman\, and Paul Tschinkel’s film about New York/New Wave\, curator Diego Cortez’s groundbreaking exhibition at PS1 in 1981\nA night performance and readings by Felice Rosser and Luc Sante.\nReadings\n\nFilm Series in collaboration with Anthology Film Archives. Anthology Film Archives will present a special\, 2-part film series to celebrate the Zeitgeist exhibition at Howl! and the release of Boom for Real. Part 1 (May 4-14) brings together a selection of films about or involving Basquiat\, as well as works that came out of the same era and milieu. For Part 2 (May 17-29)\, various participants in Boom for Real will guest-select films from the period that they feel have been overlooked\, or simply films that influenced their own work. Happening for a happening with Ammo (aka Shawn McQuate) featuring Berlin artist Magdalena Wysocka\, in honor of the New York book publication party for The Downtown Luminaries by Robert Carrithers (Pogo Books\,Berlin) \nThe book is a compendium of Carrithers’ photographs of 1980’s New York and the cultural luminaries who continue to shape our consciousness. It was a time of enormous creativity and decay\, when anything was possible on the streets\, in the tenements\, and in brilliant nightclubs. One-night art shows\, wild theme parties\, nightlife and musical happenings of every kind reigned supreme\, in a spirit of collaboration and community. Long gone but not forgotten\, in these vibrant images of New York Carrithers captures the spirit of the times. The author will sign books and present a slide show and commentary about the journey from then to now. \nExperience a Club 57 happening! Carrithers is joined by Ammo\, aka Shawn McQuate the Great\, infamous for creating unique happenings at Club 57 from 1979 to 1982. Participants include former Club 57 members\, surprise guests\, and audience members! \nA happening is all about chance\, the unexpected\, and surprise. Planned by Ammo\, the outcome of his Universal Interaction happenings is unknown—constantly changing\, funny\, entertaining\, and thought-provoking. Inspired by the city and the noise; humanity; and moments of joy\, hilarity\, and tragedy; the event is participatory\, chaotic\, unpredictable…just like life in the Big Apple. \nClub 57 alum DJ Dany Johnson provides the sound effects and music\, and the audience is the star.

DESCRIPTION:A screening of Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary from The Criterion Collection\nMade up of intimate\, revelatory footage of the singular author and poet—filmed over the course of five years—Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary about William S. Burroughs was for decades mainly the stuff of legend. That changed when Aaron Brookner\, the late director’s nephew\, discovered a print of it in 2011 and spearheaded a restoration. Now viewers can enjoy the invigorating candidness of Burroughs: The Movie\, a one-of-a-kind nonfiction portrait that was brought to life with the help of a remarkable crew of friends\, including Jim Jarmusch and Tom DiCillo. The film features on-screen appearances by artist friends of Burroughs including Allen Ginsberg\, Herbert Huncke\, Patti Smith\, and Terry Southern. \nNovelist Stewart Meyer\, a protégé of William S. Burroughs\, will read from his classic Lotus Crew – tales from the early 80’s heroin street trade on the Lower East Side – accompanied by the photographer / filmmaker David Schmidlapp’s projections.

Happening is pleased to present an evening of songs and stories called I Hate Memory! A wistful travelogue of the winsome past of EB\, which brings together two legendary downtown creators\, Eszter Balint (The Star) and Stew (The Director). Featuring an anti-cabaret which co-stars the Streets of New York and the Late 20th Century\, and which features appearances by family\, film and fame\, immigration\, joy\, theater and shame\, dance floors\, open doors\, avant-garde life\, papaya ice cream and the Shah of Iran’s wife. A reluctant memoir served on bed of song and dirt\, with a punk aperitif and Jimmy Carter for dessert. \nEszter sings and plays guitar and violin\, while Stew does the quieter singing and plays guitar\, with Vincent Sperrazza on drums and Kato Hideki on bass. \nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nMemory’s a predator \nEszter Balint is a singer-songwriter with three critically-acclaimed solo albums. She grew up as a member of the legendary avant-garde theater company Squat Theatre. She’s had featured roles in films by Jim Jarmusch\, Woody Allen\, and Steve Buscemi—including a role alongside David Bowie—and has recently starred in a six-episode arc in Season 4 of Louis CK’s TV show Louie. Jon Pareles of The New York Times has said of her work: “Miss Balint has her own film noir sensibility as a songwriter. She slips inside her characters to project their restlessness and longing.” \nSinger-songwriter Stew is a founding member of the band The Negro Problem\, and a Tony and Obie award-winning playwright and composer (Passing Strange).
