SUMMARY:Jonny Detiger Amplified Space
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project Presents\nA Kaleidoscope Installation for the Senses\n \nExploring how art interacts with space and how this interaction can yield surprising\, unexpected gifts\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present artist and designer Jonny Detiger’s Amplified Space. Detiger’s work celebrates life and joyfully bridges the gap between the mundane and the sublime. For this show at Howl!\, Detiger constructs a colorful walk-in environment in constant flux where the viewer is invited to participate\, interact\, and influence their changing surroundings. \nResonating with Howl! Happening’s connection with the music scene and Allen Kaprow’s sense of communal play\, Detiger’s exhibition and installation consists of three multicolored Plexiglas sculptural spaces that produce a complex pattern of constantly changing colors and shapes\, as well as independent\, interactive art works within these walls. Viewers may enter at different points in the installation and be enveloped by a kaleidoscope of optical and color combinations. These subtle nuances influence the perception and feeling of space—the “vibe” if you will—as the viewer actively participates in the variable nature of the work. \n“I am an artist and designer who through my work have always explored the understanding and communication of the human condition of happiness\,” says Detiger. “Using color\, sound\, smell and shape\, I design living interactive art environments with the aim of heightening this positive state of mind.” \nAmong the works contained in the kaleidoscopic walk-in sculptures is Boom Boom Box\, a sound installation with four individual seats that activate loops randomly generated by sitting on a chair. Sounds and beats create unique compositions depending on where\, when and with whom the viewer is sitting. Love Shower is a wall mounted\, metallic sculpture connected with a seat containing a speaker that plays “Love to Love You Baby” and showers the participant with aromatic bubbles infused with the essence of a Hawaiian flower known in folklore for its power to induce happiness. The visually dazzling Spin-O-Rama is a series of kinetic light sculptures that produce hypnotic\, mesmerizing patterns. Drum n’ Bass\, an interactive video projection\, has one screen displaying a drummer in front while the opposite features a bass player. When a viewer approaches the screen of the drummer or the bass player\, they will start playing. One musician or both can play at the same time until the viewer retreats. \nFocused on a comprehensive visual and aural immersive experience\, the viewer becomes an integral partner in creation of the work as they activate and direct the action\, progressing through the encompassing\, interactive\, emotionally bright and engaging works. \nDetiger grew up in Holland and attended school in Switzerland before studying business and economics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the London School of Economics and Political Science. His signature style of intricate art and mixed media sculpture explores human interaction through a kaleidoscope of iconic imagery\, text\, color and light. His furniture designs have won critical acclaim for postmodern excellence and have been featured in design books and international design magazines. \n“Art\, fashion\, design and music have always been an integral part of my life and art\,” says Detiger. “I move freely between these disciplines and create projects of ‘living art’ environments that incorporate sound\, smell\, design and color. Happiness\, humor and positivity are common themes that run through all of my work.” \n

SUMMARY:The Full Wolf Moon Show with Tony Stinkmetal
DESCRIPTION:A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\n\nJanuary 12th / 5PM / Free\nA pack of lone wolves travel together across the lunar landscape to gather in front of HOWL Happening Gallery.\nEn masse the lone wolves build igloos and pyramids.\nThey devour souls and offer a moonlit invocation to Luna Macaroona on this long dark night.\nDress Code:  hounds tooth\, foxgloves and lunar white \nAs a special tribute to Tom Murrin\, the late godfather of performance art\, Howl! Happening presents its monthly series THE FULL MOON SHOW—performances\, rituals\, and blessings paying tribute to his moon goddess Luna Macaroona—an homage he delivered as a stage and street performer for nearly 50 years. Whether in the gallery or on the street\, expect madcap performances by old friends and rising stars. The Tom Murrin/Full Moon series is curated by performance artist Salley May. \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nPhoto copyright Eric McNatt 2016
