SUMMARY:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery FSW
DESCRIPTION:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective\nBob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW \nNovember 4 – December 17\, 2016 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 4 from 6-8pm \nPanel Discussion with special guests Carlo McCormick\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, and Adam Lehrer on Saturday\, November 5 at 1pm\nFort Myers\, FLORIDA: Florida SouthWestern State College is delighted to announce Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (located on FSW’s Lee County campus). Opening with a public reception on Friday\, November 4th from 6-8pm\, this ambitious survey runs through December 17th and will include guest lectures\, performances and a panel discussion exploring Arturo Vega’s broader impact on popular culture and contextualizing his work as a visual artist. A collaboration with The Arturo Vega Foundation in NYC\, Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective is the late Mexican-born artist’s first solo U.S. museum retrospective and features photography\, collage and a number of iconic canvases from the artist’s Supermarket and Silver Dollar series (begun in the 1970s); his Flags and so-called “word paintings” from Insults and other series produced during the 1980s\, ‘90s and aughts. \n  \nEscaping the repressive violence of an authoritarian regime under Mexico’s “perfect dictatorship” in the late ‘60s\, Arturo Vega made his way to New York City to study English\, philosophy and photography at the New School for Social Research in the early 1970’s. Having discovered Elvis as a child and later co-directing a touring production of The Who’s “Tommy” at the National University in Mexico City\, Vega understood the revolutionary and transformative power of music\, theatre/performance and art. While working on his first painting series of supermarket signs\, he befriended members of The Ramones\, a rock & roll band that would soon play their first show (and would decades later be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame). Designing the Ramones’ ubiquitous logo based on the Great Seal of the United States\, painting backdrops for their stage and creating a lighting scheme loosely adapted from Albert Speer’s Lichtdom to enhance their effect\, Vega created visual imagery that defined the transgressive aesthetic of punk rock by co-opting and questioning symbols of power. \n  \nIn numerous group shows since the 1970’s\, Vega’s work has more recently been the subject of one-person exhibitions at CB’s 313 Gallery/New York City (1992)\, Raleigh Studios/Miami Beach (Curated by Sandra Schulman in 1994)\, Galería OMR/México\, D.F. (2011)\, Casa Redonda\, Chihuahua/Mexico (2012) and at Howl! Happening in NYC in 2015 and 2016. As Vega once said: “Art connects to the eternal – demanding fast changes and a reckless appetite for truth\, justice and a better way of life.” Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery will draw parallels and explore interests shared by Arturo Vega and our gallery namesake. For Rauschenberg\, “(Art was) a means to function thoroughly and passionately in a world that has a lot more to it than paint.” \n  \nMore about us: The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery was founded as The Gallery of Fine Art in 1979 on the Lee County campus of Florida SouthWestern State College/FSW (then Edison Community College). On June 4th 2004\, the Gallery of Fine Art was renamed the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery to honor and commemorate our long time association and friendship with the artist. Over more than three decades until his death\, the Gallery worked closely with Rauschenberg to present world premiere exhibitions including multiple installations of the ¼ Mile or Two Furlong Piece. The artist insisted on naming the space the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (versus the “Robert Rauschenberg Gallery”) as it was consistent with the intimate\, informal relationship he maintained with both our local Southwest Florida community and FSW. \n These events are open to the public\, free of charge. \n Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday 11 am – 3 pm \nClosed Sundays and Holidays \n Tel: (239) 489-9313 \nWeb: www.RauschenbergGallery.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:TOYO TSUCHIYA Invisible Underground
DESCRIPTION:[Tsuchiya’s images] feel like reports of life on another\, hipper planet\, of which little trace would remain were it not for his persistent and attentive recording eye.\n—Holland Cotter\, “Six O’Clock Observed\,” New York Times\, 1999 \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present a survey of the work Toyo Tsuchiya\, including photographs from the 99 nights at No Se No\, a ten foot print of his iconic image of a garden party in full swing amidst the rubble and ruin or a tenement building\, and other series that capture the Lower East Side during its heyday in the 1980s. His photographs embody Toyo’s search for human connection and identity. \nAlso featured will be a large-scale\, life-sized installation depicting workers in Chinatown on their lunch break with the pathos and presence reminiscent of Ed Kienholz\, as well as new\, colorful paintings inspired by 30 years of shooting in New York City. \nTsuchiya is best known for his photographs of NYC’s Lower East Side art scene in the 1980’s and as an originator of the legendary Rivington School. In these highly personalized images of New York’s Lower East Side since 1980\, Tsuchiya documented what was happening around him—the people\, performance art\, and the Lower East Side art scene—and especially the legendary underground movement of the collaborative Rivington School. \nBorn near Mt. Fuji in Japan\, Tsuchiya grew up in Kyushu and Yokohama. After graduating from the Kanagawa Ken Technical High School for Industrial Design he began his career as an artist. Living in Osaka\, Yokohama\, and Tokyo\, he studied and exhibited paintings\, drawings and collage within a small circle of the 1970’s art world in Tokyo. In the late 70’s he turned to photography\, and soon moved to New York City. \nTsuchiya was a creative force behind the No Se No Social Club\, the stage for many art happenings\, including the 99 Nights\, a marathon of free performances and exhibitions. In his photographs\, Tsuchiya captures the style\, energy\, and free-spirited creativity of the time\, and contextualized these happenings in a fine-art lineage. \nTsuchiya photographed the great performers of the era\, including Stelarc\, Jack Smith\, Tehching Hsieh\, Monty Cantsin and Karen Black\, to name a few. He also curated shows with now notable artists like Ai Weiwei. His work has\, as Tsuchiya acknowledges\, “become part of the underground history of the Lower East Side art and life of the 80s. All of my intention and passion of the 80s remains in those images.” \nIconoclastic and against the grain\, Holland Cotter says in his review: His subject wasn’t the professionalized East Village gallery phenomenon but the fringe activity taking place in the working class\, primarily Hispanic neighborhood centered below Houston Street on Rivington Street. There\, art\, music and performance intermingled; graffiti and Neo-Expression held their own after their vogue had passed elsewhere. The atmosphere was squatter-anarchic; artists\, collectively referred to as the Rivington School\, met in clubs and worked in the street. \nIn recent years\, Tsuchiya has turned to collage\, drawing\, sculpture and mixed media and continues to explore new media and outlets for his relentless creativity.

SUMMARY:The Rivington School: 80s New York Underground
DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2016\nIn honor of the exhibition Toyo Tsuchiya Invisible Underground and the publication of Rivington School: 80s New York Underground\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present the launch of a new book celebrating the Rivington School. Iconoclastic and populist\, the Rivington School is an outgrowth of the No Se No social club and gallery founded in 1983 by “Cowboy” Ray Kelly\, a one-time farmer from Texas\, who maintained that “anyone can be an artist\,” that everything is a work of art. The School was also the origin of the Rivington Sculpture Garden\, a guerrilla sculpture space containing the massive\, welded metal junk sculpture that the group has become known for. \nA vortex of creativity\, Rivington School artists devised ways to live\, create art\, and exhibit with very little money and virtually no media attention. As David Dalton says in his essay for Tsuchiya’s catalog\, “It was a scene so underground that it never came up for air.” \nDecember 8\, 2016 / 6 PM\nR.U.O.K. OR WAT?\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground\nPublication Party\nJoin editor Istvan Kantor for an evening celebrating the new tome including a ritual book burning of the first copy by Monty Cantsin accompanied by Angel Eyedealism\, as well as Rivington School contributors\, and Black Dog publisher Duncan McCorquodale from London.\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground documents the work of the Rivington School group of artists that emerged during the turbulent 80s in the heart of the Lower East Side. The RS set an internationally important precedent for contemporary alternative practice. The book explores the underground scene that formed around this group of artists\, named after an abandoned public school building on Rivington Street. Here\, like-minded street artists\, sculptors and performers set about to create works that refuted and challenged an increasingly commercialized art world. \n

SUMMARY:The Full Moon Show Philly/KONDOR8 Empowerment Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 13 / 2 PM / Free \n THE FULL MOON SHOW \nA Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention \nAs a special tribute to Tom Murrin\, the late godfather of performance art\, Howl! Happening presents its monthly series THE FULL MOON SHOW—performances\, rituals\, and blessings paying tribute to his moon goddess Luna Macaroona—an homage he delivered as a stage and street performer for nearly 50 years. Whether in the gallery or on the street\, expect madcap performances by old friends and rising stars. The Tom Murrin/Full Moon series is curated by performance artist Salley May. Check back here for times and performers. \nIn her own inimitable style\, she sez:\n“i am doin a multidemsional full moon/solstice ritual complete with greek chorus consisting of salley may…..hapi phace and tony stinkmetal….divination…speakin in tonguez….prophecy and fruit sacrifice and more…..with everythang goin on now it it time for us all to become warriorz…this is an empowerment ceremony………….. I am a hag….hereditary intuitive and ritualist…active since politically and artistically since late 60z….u can also call me babycondor or KONDOR8 which is my tag….had scholarship with lindsey kemp…my only formal trainin….underground moviez with da kuchar brothers..todd verow and many otherz….pyramid performer….many showz and ritualz through da yearz…..i used to call what i do neo shaman a gogo now i step out and say it is time to emerge from da shadowz and do da do… my ritualz or my paintingz in motion….my paintz r vehicles of transformation…….” \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels.\nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. He performed in New York City clubs and theaters as The Alien Comic\, appearing in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights he dubbed The Full Moon Show at Performance Space 122\, at the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club (where he started) and at Dixon Place. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986.
