All of these can be seen to have been influenced by the Beat zeitgeist. \nHowl! Happening and Bowery Arts + Science are pleased to present a week-long\, multi-venue celebration of the Beats and their influence on American culture. Beat & Beyond honors the poets\, musicians\, bookstores\, publishers\, and other significant individuals whose voice and energy transformed the U.S. forever. They will  introduce And When I Die\, I Won’t Stay Dead\, a feature-length documentary about Kaufman by Billy Woodberry. “The doc marks a welcome and overdue comeback for Woodberry some 31 years after his sole drama feature Bless Their Little Hearts\, a neo-realist study of a cash-strapped Watts family\, made considerable impact on limited Stateside release. Along with his sometime collaborator Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep)\, Woodberry was a leading figure in the L.A. Rebellion\, the loose collective of black filmmakers who emerged from the UCLA Film School in the mid-1970s and foregrounded social and political issues in their work.” — Neil Young\, Hollywood Reporter \n8 PM: The Films of Taylor Mead\nTaylor Mead\, the Poet laureate of Warhol’s Factory\, the world’s first Underground Movie Star\, and the Lower East Side’s own poet maudit\, is remembered with a rare showing of The Flower Thief as well as The Party In Taylor Mead’s Kitchen and other Mead films.

She was living in Tangier with her husband Paul when the Beats invaded and Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch. More than a footnote in canon of literature\, she has been extolled by John Ashbery as “a writer’s writer” and by Tennessee Williams as the “most underrated writer in American literature.” Akalaitis was the co-founder of Mabou Mines and has staged works from Euripides to Beckett\, including Jane Bowles only play In the Summer House at Lincoln Center Theater.\nActors Elizabeth Marvel\, Karen Kandel\, Angelina Impellizerri give voice to the Infinite juiciness and variety of her words and characters. \n9 PM: Bob Holman and Mink Stole star in 33 & 1/3 Cornelia Street\nStaged Reading of a New Play by Alvin Eng\nAlternating between Bohemian Greenwich Village and a 70s Women’s Studies lecture by accidental feminist icon and painter Alice Neel\, 33 & 1/3 CORNELIA STREET dramatizes the conflicts of spiritual vs. commercial ownership of art and personal stories. The play explores the conjoined legacy of urban legend/proto-Beat poet Joe Gould and celebrated The New Yorker journalist Joseph Mitchell through the vortex of Neel’s groundbreaking 1933 portrait of Gould. Mitchell immortalized Gould in a 1942 The New Yorker profile for writing the longest book ever written and the first oral history—or did he? Later\, Mitchell published a second profile\, “Joe Gould’s Secret\,” claiming Gould’s opus to be a hoax…or was it?\nJoe Gould will be played by poet Bob Holman\, Bowery Poetry founder and PBS Language Matters host. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 6\, starting at 5 PM\nFREE Bowery Poetry\, 308 Bowery \nA day-long event showcasing the Beats’ influence on modern spoken word\, slam poetry\, and other contemporary literary forms. Includes PoetNY Open Mic in SUPER form featuring the festival’s eight original Beat all-stars as well as young\, up-and-coming spoken and unspoken word poets. The evening ends with a Super Bowery Slam\, featuring old and new slam poets from the Bowery\, the Nuyorican and the other Slam poetry series around the city\, culminating with the unveiling of Bowery Poetry’s Slam Team that will be heading to the national competition this summer. Expect to hear The Last Poets\, The Next-to-the-Last Poets\, and The Next Poets as well as Beats\, Umbras\, Deep Imagists and maybe even some Sound\, Language\, and New Formalists. A Wide Open Scene. \n3 PM: el Plumo Emplumado: a talk by Margaret Randall\nFrom January\, 1962 through July\, 1969\, El Corno Emplumado / The Plumed Horn was on the cutting edge of independent publishing. The bilingual quarterly\, which ran from 100 to almost 300 pages per issue\, published some of the best new work to come out of Latin and North America—with occasional sections from Canada\, Finland\, France\, and other countries. Its 3\,000 copies were distributed worldwide. The journal was founded and co-edited by Margaret Randall and Sergio Mondragon. In its last year Robert Cohen replaced Mondragon on the masthead. Because it took a stand in defense of Mexico’s 1968 Student Movement\, in mid-1969 the journal was forced to close.
