DESCRIPTION:When Jackie Met Ethyl\nGuest curated by Dan Cameron \nThis exhibition considers the cultural and historical impact of Jackie Curtis (1947-1985) and Ethyl Eichelberger (1945-1990) two of the most influential figures from the East Village’s heyday as a cauldron of transgressive gender-twisting performance. Although both came from the same generation and shared an overlapping support base\, an instinctive feminist outlook\, and a deep grounding in the absurd\, Curtis and Eichelberger were very different figures\, and are not believed to have known each other personally. \nJackie Curtis was born John Curtis Holder\, Jr. on the Lower East Side\, and mostly raised by his maternal grandmother\, known as Slugger Ann\, whose eponymous bar on 2nd Avenue was a well-known refuge for social misfits. A member of Andy Warhol’s original network of Superstars — along with Candy Darling and Holly Woodlawn –\, Curtis’ stage debut was at age 17 in Tom Eyen’s Miss Nefertiti Regrets\, followed by roles in the Paul Morrissey films Flesh (1968) and Women in Revolt (1971). Aside from possessing a mesmerizing screen presence\, Curtis’ greatest artistic influence was as playwright and songwriter for the productions Glamour\, Glory and Gold; Vain Victory; and Heaven Grand in Amber Orbit\, all of which featured transsexual characters. The Jackie Curtis signature ‘look’ — glitter and lipstick combined with ripped stockings and/or housedresses – was widely adopted in the 1970s and 1980s\, and in 2004 the documentary Superstar in a Housedress brought the Curtis legend to a new generation. \nEthyl Eichelberger was born James Roy Eichelberger in rural Illinois\, and spent much of his first thirty years studying acting and working in regional repertory theater\, eventually becoming an expert wigmaker and member of Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company. In 1975 he legally changed his first name to Ethyl and introduced a flamboyant stage presence\, singing while playing piano and accordion\, and radically re-conceiving classic characters like King Lear and Medea as drag cabaret. Although Eichelberger appeared in films\, Broadway theater productions\, and an HBO series for kid\, and was a successful commercial actor\, his main impact was as a performer in intimate East Village venues like P.S. 122\, Pyramid Lounge\, 8BC\, and s.n.a.f.u.. In the course of more than thirty original and adapted plays\, his was nearly always the title role\, often with multiple male and female characters switching parts\, and occasional acrobatic or circus stunts thrown in for equal measure. \nWhen Jackie Met Ethyl will feature a number of different media\, key among them video documentation – by Nelson Sullivan\, among others — of plays\, poetry and songs written and performed by the two artists\, along with script excerpts\, props and memorabilia from productions of these and other performances. Also included are images of Eichelberger and Curtis by photographers Peter Hujar\, Dona McAdams\, Jack Mitchell\, Billy Sullivan\, Ande Whyland\, and Kirila Faeh\, to demonstrate how the legacy of these two artists continues to influence culture\, When Jackie Met Ethyl will also include the 1994 sculpture\, Big Round Flat\, from A Flower for Ethyl series\, by Oliver Herring\, and recent interpretations of Curtis’ and Eichelbergers’ work by contemporary artists. \nThe accompanying publication will include an introductory essay by curator Dan Cameron\, along with texts by Penny Arcade\, Brian Butterick\, Joe E. Jeffreys\, Robert Heide\, Craig Highberger\, Agosto Machado\, and Joan Moossy. \n

The celebration includes readings\, music\, and remembrances of the times and its continuing influence by Michael McClure\, Ed Sanders\, Bob Holman\, Peter Hale\, Bob Rosenthal\,  Len Chandler and others. \n8 PM: First Blues Re-release Party\nA celebration of the new 3 CD box set LAST WORD ON FIRST BLUES\, a collection of Allen’s singing/songwriting 1971-1984. There will be a round-table discussion led by the box set’s producer Pat Thomas with Hank O’Neal\, and musicians David Amram\, Steven Taylor\, David Mansfield\, and Jon Sholle followed by a live performance by them. \n9 PM: The David Amram Quartet \nOngoing\nAlso\, beginning Friday and continuing through the course of the week\, painter Mark Turgeon will create a timeline installation at Howl! Happening\,  “An Incomplete History of Beat\,” and a jukebox of Beat poetry will be installed in Extra Place\, the alley next to the gallery.

Happening\, 6 East 1st Street\n2 PM: Remembering d.a. levy and Reminiscing on the value of Bookstores\nReadings of d.a. levy’s poetry and a panel discussion featuring Ed Sanders\, David Kirschenbaum\, Mike Golden\, Kent Taylor (via Skype)\, and others.\nTurning his native Cleveland into a capital of Beat culture\, people’s poet\, publisher\, non-comformist\, pamphleteer\, and counter-cultural icon d.a. levy embodies the spirit of the Beat underground. The event also shines a light on another Cleveland Beat centerpiece\, Jim Lowell’s Asphodel Bookshop\, raided in 1966 for selling obscene literature.  From there we journey to other bookstores like City Lights\, 8th Street Books\, St. Marks Bookshop and Peace Eye Bookstore\, sacred sites that were the hubs and homes of the Beat poets and so many others. \n4 PM: The Six Gallery Reading\nMichael McClure orchestrates a celebration for the Six Gallery reading Oct.7\, 1955 in San Francisco\, when Ginsberg first read “Howl” to the public. The legendary reading McClure’s first reading ever\, and also included\, included Philip Lamantia\, Gary Snyder\, and Philip Whalen.  Kenneth Rexroth was the MC\, and Jack Kerouac kept busy passing around the red wine jug\, shouting “Go! Go! Go!” and recording the scene in Dharma Bums. McClure will present as Kenneth Rexroth and be joined by Ava Chin as Gary Snyder\, Hettie Jones as Allen Ginsberg\, Max Blagg as Philip Lamantia\, Andy Clausen as Philip Whalen and Nikhil Melnechuk as McClure\, himself. \n5:30 PM: We Remember\nA gathering of the Beat poets and others to share poetry\, stories\, memories\, and personal anecdotes of those we’ve lost as they are added to a Wall of Names. John Giorno will open the proceedings with “The Death of William Burroughs.”  Photos and short film will be shown\, and the audience will share memories and names aloud and on a remembrance wall\, alongside Mark Turgeon‘s ongoing live-painting\, “An Incomplete History of Beat.” The evening will close with a group reading from Ginsberg‘s “Kaddish.” \n8 PM: Concert \nWe’ll all dance over to Bowery Electric for a concert featuring Peter Stampfel The Fugs\, and The Last Poets\, with Abiodun Oyewole. Umar bin Hasan\, and Babatunde.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 4\, 8:00 PM\n$15 Bowery Electric\, 327 Bowery\, New York \nA diverse and influential group of musicians come together to raise the roof\, tell it like it is\, and share the joy of sounds and messages originating in the Beat era. \nPeter Stampfel: A singer/songwriter and fiddler\, Stampfel was a member of the psychedelic folk band The Holy Modal Rounders\, and briefly with the Fugs. He was the leader of several musical projects including The Bottlecaps and the WORM All-Stars and has performed with They Might be Giants\, The Roches\, and Loudon Wainwright III\, among others. \nThe Fugs with Ed Sanders: Highly influential and always anarchic\, The Fugs were founded in 1965 and quickly became a countercultural phenomenon known for combining classical poetry with outrageous\, political\, raunchy\, and often downright hilarious lyrics. Ed Sanders\, the co-founder with Tuli Kupferberg\, is a poet\, scholar\, social activist\, and publisher of The Woodstock Journal. Also in the band is Steven Taylor\, noted composer and professor at Naropa University in Boulder\, Colorado\, who performed with Allen Ginsberg for many years. Famous Fugs tunes include: “Slum Goddess From the Lower East Side\,” “We Don’t Allow No Robots in Sunday School\,” “Refuse to Be Burnt-Out\,” and Tuli’s ever-popular “Nothing.” Coby Batty and Scott Petito shall also rock out. \nThe Last Poets Umar Bin Hassan\, Abiodun Oyewole\, Babatunde: Coming out of the Civil Rights movement in the late 60s\, The Last Poets were one of the earliest purveyors of politically-charged\, urgent poetry—the precursors of hip hop. Their fiery spoken word and taut rhythms are credited with influencing and paving the way for the emergence of Rap and Hip Hop music. Speaking out about racism\, poverty and other concerns\, their work is as relevant and inspirational today as it was when they began.
