Happening is pleased to present an exhibition of portraits and allegorical paintings by Walter Steding that move beyond representation to hidden and poetic unseen worlds. An artist who has worked in many mediums— acting\, writing\, filmmaking\, music\, painting—his personal lexicon creates an alchemical mix projecting these works into a deeper\, more mystical realm.  \nSteding—who was Andy Warhol’s painting assistant and is a virtuosic violinist well known for developing his own electronic instruments and performing solo and with Blondie\, Jim Carroll\, David Byrne\, Chic\, Robert Fripp and Panther Burns—has been painting since he was 5 years old. \nHis portraits go beyond Realism. They fix you with an intense focus from a purely pictorial space\, floating in a neutral background that emphasizes all the more the essence of the sitter\, whether it be the Grand Prior of the Knights Templar\, the Golem\, a jester\, a family portrait\, or a dog\, \nCapturing the essence of his subjects\, he says he is concerned with the world of “non-being” that transmutes his sitters’ physiognomy into a virtual space of pure imagination. The simplicity and straightforward gaze\, reduces the critical “noise” representing external reality and the viewer can experience these people and creatures\, as through an abstract lens of shapes\, colors\, and forms. \nIn his painting\, The Fall of Boaz\, the two pillars of Solomon’s Temple crash and burn in the background while a cast of characters and symbols create a tableau upfront that fuses his esoteric knowledge and understanding of art history. His straightforward manner allows one to by-pass the actual image and artistic style and inhabit the allegorical space of his imaginative world. \nLike an old master painting\, Storming the Capital is all metaphor and stylized emotion and relies on the observers’ interpretations of the meaning that Steding sets forth. He spent much of his life in the East Village where he studied at Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell’s school The Subject of An Artist. Despite his proximity to celebrated Abstract Expressionists of the same generation and the recognition of his peers\, Shapinsky did not garner the attention of the art world. He possessed an intensity that was reflected both in his work and in his distaste for the politics of the commercial art world\, and so while the movement flourished around him\, Shapinsky worked in obscurity in his small Lower East Side apartment with his wife Kate. He painted in bold brush strokes on thick paper\, which was the only medium that he could both afford and find room to store. \nShapinsky’s talent would likely have continued to go unrecognized if not for Akumal Ramachander\, an English professor and arts publicist from India who encountered Shapinsky’s son David at the University of Chicago. David presented images of his father’s work to Ramachander upon learning of his work promoting under-recognized artists\, and Ramachander immediately vowed to champion Shapinsky’s work.  \nRamachander began promoting Shapinsky in New York\, but the tide of Abstract Expressionism had receded in the United States and he had limited luck. In the meantime\, he befriended the artist and began advocating for Shapinsky in London. In the Spring of 1985\, Ramachander persuaded James Mayer to give Shapinsky a show at his gallery that opened on Shapinsky’s 60th birthday to great acclaim. More exhibitions in Europe and eventually in the U.S. followed\, as well as a documentary on Channel 4 (UK)\, an article in the Observer by Salman Rushdie\, and a 16 page New Yorker feature by Lawrence Weschler. \nToday\, the art and story of Harold Shapinsky has joined the public consciousness\, and Shapinsky was awarded recognition and financial freedom in his later years of life. Still\, for Shapinsky\, the work remained central to his existence. “If none of this had happened\,” Shapinsky said in a 1985 Washington Post interview\, “I’d still paint. Over the next decade\, he would paint over 100 whole subway cars throughout the MTA system\, to then shift to a studio-based practice. Lee was instrumental in moving street art above the ground when he created the first handball-court mural in 1978. He has presented numerous solo shows and exhibited internationally; his first exhibition was at Galleria La Medusa\, Rome\, in 1979. \n Charlie Ahearn has been involved in hip hop since the late 70s with his Super-8 kung-fu movie The Deadly Art of Survival. No public gatherings to mourn those killed by Russia’s relentless attacks on the port city of Mariupol that became a symbol of Ukraine’s ferocious resistance. The mass grave trenches told the story of a city under siege. \nThe world would have seen none of this\, would have seen next to nothing at all from Mariupol as a city under siege\, if it wasn’t for Mstyslav Chernov and Evgeniy Maloletka\, the Associated Press team who race into the city when the invasion began and stayed long after it had become one of the most dangerous places on Earth. For more than two weeks\, they were the only international media in the city\, and the only journalists able to transmit video and still photos to the outside world. \nMoscow hated their work. The Russian embassy in London tweeted images of AP photos with the word “Fake” over them in red text. A top Russian diplomat held up copies of photos from the maternity hospital at a U.N. Security Council meeting\, insisting they were phony. Happening is pleased to present the hometown premiere screening of Nora Burns’ David’s Friend\, The story of a crazy friendship in 1980s New York City—a restless city during a reckless time\, the film began as a solo show by Burns that opened at La MaMa in 2017 and toured for the next 3 years. It is a comic odyssey about cruising\, disco\, drag queens\, strippers\, sex\, love\, loss\, and AIDS\, told with music\, videos\, costumes\, characters\, tall tales and torrid truths.  \nFilmed In March 2020 at Casita del Campo in Los Angeles\, it played at a few film festivals\, which were mostly virtual\, and due to the pandemic\, it never got to have its hometown premier.  \nBurns is a founding member of the comedy groups Unitard and the Nellie Olesons. She has performed across the country in various venues including PS122\, La MaMa\, and Joe’s Pub in New York City\, Highways\, Cavern Club and The HBO Workspace in Los Angeles and appeared in the comedy festivals Just for Laughs in Montreal and We’re Funny That Way in Toronto\, and at the Aspen Comedy Festival (now HBO Comedy Festival). Included are never-before-seen images and artifacts documenting a revolutionary and seminal period in gay history. In conjunction with the exhibit\, a brand-new issue of My Comrade will be published\, the first in 16 years. \nMy Comrade magazine was founded by drag queen Linda Simpson in 1987 during the dark era of the AIDS crisis and served as a symbol of hope and frivolity to the East Village gay scene and beyond. Armed with a tongue-in-cheek “revolutionary” agenda\, the magazine glorified heroic drag queens and sexy guys in a cut-and-paste mishmash of articles and photo spreads. Lesbians got their due when the flip side became Sister! The sporadic publishing schedule produced a total of eleven issues until 1994. It was revived in 2004 for two more. \nThe exhibit features reproductions and enlargements of My Comrade’s black-and-white pages. Notable contributors to the magazine included photographers Jack Pierson and David Armstrong\, painter Stephen Tashjian a.k.a. Tabboo!\, and drag stars RuPaul and Lady Bunny. Published this year by Journal of Aesthetics & Protest Press\, books will be on sale at the event. \nThe New York City artworld of the late 20th century seems far more fluid and changeable\, with many more positions for its different actors to inhabit than the artworld of today. The market rules in all spheres of image-making\, enforced by super-high valuations of traditional artwork\, and global social media and streaming platforms. \nFrom art critic and video artist to radical organizer and academic\, Moore played multiple roles in a seething scene of art galleries\, nightclubs\, and small publications. Written in an accessible style\, Art Worker is in three parts\, with characters\, anecdotes\, footnotes\, and an extensive bibliography. It’s a book by a scholar written for a general audience. \nAbout the Participants \nAlan W. Moore worked as a critic\, artist\, and organizer in NYC for 30 years. He worked with the artists’ group Colab\, and co-directed ABC No Rio and the MWF Video Club. He took a PhD in Art History from CUNY in 2000\, and published Art Gangs in 2011. He has recently studied squatting in Europe; he published the zine House Magic (2009-16)\, co-edited Making Room: Cultural Production in Occupied Spaces and wrote Occupation Culture (both 2015). He lives in Madrid\, and blogs at “Occupations & Properties” and “Art Gangs”. His book Art Worker launches this month. \nMarc H Miller arrived in New York from California in 1968 and lived at 98 Bowery\, NYC from 1969 to 1989 with extended stays in Washington DC and Amsterdam\, Holland.  Miller is an artist\, curator\, writer\, publisher\, and educator.  His multi-faceted career is unified by an interest in pictorial images and their inherent ability to tell stories. He holds a Ph.D. in art history from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts (1979). He runs the website 98bowery.com. \nYasmin Ramirez is an art worker\, curator\, and writer. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Graduate Center\, CUNY.  Born in Brooklyn\, Ramirez was active in the downtown art scene of the early 1980s as a club kid and art critic for the East Village Eye. She has curated exhibitions on the Young Lords\, Martin Wong\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, and the Nuyorican art movement\, and collaborated on curatorial projects with the Bronx Museum\, El Museo Del Barrio\, the Loisaida Center\, the New Museum\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, Franklin Furnace\, and Taller Boricua. \nLeonard Abrams is a writer\, editor\, and filmmaker. He was editor and publisher of the East Village Eye monthly newsmagazine\, in circulation from May 1979 until January 1987. From 1987-89 he co-produced the underground clubs Milky Way and Hotel Amazon\, venues that mixed early hip hop with reggae\, funk\, soul and house music. In 2007 he made the documentary film “Quilombo Country\,” about contemporary Brazilian communities founded by escaped slaves. He presented the East Village Eye Show at Howl Happening in 2016.  \nStephen Zacks is an advocacy journalist\, architecture writer\, urbanist\, and project organizer based in New York City. He publishes regularly in Abitare\, L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui\, Architect’s Newspaper\, Architectural Record\, Art in America\, Dwell\, Landscape Architecture\, Oculus\, and Metropolis. He was director of the Flint Public Art Project\, co-founder of the Bring to Light–Nuit Blanche festival\, and past co-director of Collective Unconscious performance space.
