SUMMARY:Paul Tschinkel Alan Vega: An Artist’s Story
DESCRIPTION:In 1979\, filmmaker/artist Paul Tschinkel videotaped one of Suicide’s earliest performances at Max’s Kansas City in New York. The film starts with a thrilling performance of Ghost Rider and concludes with Vega performing at CBGB in 1983. \nIn 2004\, Alan spoke to Tschinkel frankly and movingly about his roots and life as an artist and performer. The film reveals Alan’s story as he tells it—his early interest in art and studies with such luminaries as Burgoyne Diller and Ad Reinhardt at Brooklyn College\, and his eventual contact with Martin Rev and their journey to gut-wrenching musical performances as electropunk duo Suicide. \nConceived in the early 70s by Vega and Rev\, the band was initially associated with the avant-punk movement of the New York music scene that spawned such groups as Blondie\, The Velvet Underground\, the Ramones\, the New York Dolls\, the Heartbreakers\, and many others. They quickly became a phenomenom—unclassifiable and against the grain of the increasingly “pop” sensibility of punk. Suicide’s hypnotic\, pulsing synth and cheap drum machine sound\, combined with Vega’s eerie\, echoing vocals in primal rockabilly style\, captured the feeling of a crumbling city…the ominous looks…the sound of the microphone slamming against the face…. \nInitially trashed by the music press\, their confrontational live performances are the stuff of legend. Recognized for unique and revolutionary style\, the album Suicide (1977) was recently named by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 best albums of all times.

SUMMARY:Dan Cameron: Sexo\, Drogas y Rock ‘n’ Roll
DESCRIPTION:Dan Cameron \nLower East Side curator and critic Dan Cameron\, who organized the exhibition When Jackie Met Ethyl for Howl! Happening in May 2016\, and wrote texts for both our Arturo Vega and Pyramid Lounge publications\, returns to give a talk on a part of Vega’s life and career that until now has been left unexplored: his years as a budding actor and artist in Mexico City. Although no physical artwork by Vega remains from this period\, Cameron has spoken to his friends and acquaintances from that time\, and drawn heavily on the research of contemporary Mexican curators to describe a cultural context in which visual artists were art directing rock bands\, avant-garde filmmakers made TV shows on rock and roll\, and Mexican youth culture seemed as fixated on sex and drugs as its northern neighbor. Special focus is made on the artist Pedro Friedeberg\, whose work and lifestyle had a powerful impact on the young Arturo\, and the disastrous Avándaro rock festival in 1971\, repercussions from which would literally drive the growing Mexican live concert scene underground\, and many of its more ambitious young creative minds into exile.

SUMMARY:The Full Moon Show With MC Extraordinaire Paul Alexander
DESCRIPTION:A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\nEvery Month on the Full Moon\nMC Extraordinaire Paul Alexander uses his mic as a divining rod to get to the bottom of  . . . all this. From whirling dervishes to house parties\, big answers have often been found on the dance floor. \nTo celebrate April’s Dancing Moon\, MC Alexander will be laying down the law at Howl! International nightclub royalty\, Alexander has been dubbed Voice Of The Night. \nAs vocalist with The Ones\, and an MC at the legendary Tuesday evening extravaganza\, Jackie 60\, Paul honed his talents. He is currently casting his new Musical Trinket’s (a fairy tale set in a 20th century meat-packing district) at the Gene Frankel Theater. \nHowl!’s bi-coastal Full Moon Show curators and co-hosts Salley May and Tony Stinkmetal perform a long-distance tango via Skype as Salley brings the party to L.A. See you on the dance floor—in this case\, the sidewalk outside Howl! Happening—and let the firm hand of MC Paul Alexander guide you to express your fear and rage and hope and love. \nGet to work\, children! \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nImage: P. Alexander

SUMMARY:Arleen Schloss FORGET ABOUT THAT SWEET FUCK BABY
DESCRIPTION:Film/Video Screening\, Panel Discussion\, T-shirt Benefit\nThis event is cash only \nSome Serious Business and Howl! Happening are pleased to present a tribute to the work of Arleen Schloss\, an influential figure in the downtown New York art\, video\, performance art and music scenes. FORGET ABOUT THAT SWEET FUCK BABY is an evening of film screenings and discussion with director/producer Roberta Friedman\, educator and independent filmmaker Stuart Ginsberg\, Whitney Museum curator Christiane Paul\, and archivist Sur Rodney (Sur). \nSchloss gained attention in the 70s as a critically acclaimed performance artist and has gone on to create groundbreaking work in a variety of mediums including film\, video\, sound poetry\, new music\, composing\, books\, and mail art. She co-founded A’s—an interdisciplinary loft space that was a hub for music\, exhibitions\, performance art\, films and videos. A hotbed of experimentation\, A’s featured works from Eric Bogosian\, Glenn Branca\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, John Zorn\, Elliott Sharp\, Richard Hambleton\, Liquid Liquid\, Carolee Schneemann\, The Coachmen\, Kim Gordon\, Phoebe Legere\, Mania D\, Thurston Moore\, Shirin Neshat\, Lee Ranaldo\, Sur Rodney (Sur)\, Alan Vega and Ai Weiwei. \nShifting from one genre to another\, she has created a finely interwoven body of work. Always on the cutting edge\, Schloss fused new forms of creative expression and technology into her film\, video\, cyber art and performance work. \nSchloss’s performances possess a spirit described by Linda Burnham as “a contagious sense of wonder.” These presentations\, which could involve Schloss’s cyclical recitation of the alphabet\, live painting\, closed-circuit video\, and music all at once\, combine the anti-art whimsy of Fluxus\, scientific exploration\, Cageian indeterminacy\, and a site-specific empathy that makes every act unique.\n—New Museum\, Schloss film screening\, in conjunction with Come Closer: Art Around the Bowery\, 1969–1989 \nIn her honor\, SSB will reproduce a limited number of FORGET ABOUT THAT SWEET FUCK t-shirts from How She Sees It by Her (1981) as seen in Toyo Tsuchiya’s photo of Arleen. Tees for men and women will be available at the gallery\, or bring your own shirt and we’ll silkscreen it for you then and there for $25 a pop. All proceeds the evening of the event go to benefit Arleen. The evening is co-curated by Stuart Ginsberg\, and SSB directors Susan Martin and Quintan Ana Wikswo. \nFilm/Video Screening\nHow She Sees It by Her\, 1981 (18 minutes)\nThe title of this film is derived from the story HOW SHE SEES IT BY HER\, a 58-page written journal of personal observations scanning life and survival in New York City in the early 80s. Originating as a piece of sound poetry and later a public performance\, Arleen mixed her voice and personal observations with footage from the time period. \nGlenn Branca Symphony #4 (Physics)\, 1984 (11 minutes)\nA docu-collage in sound and music capturing the godfather of classical noise throughout a multi-city European tour in 1983. Featuring Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth\, Barbara Ess\, Arleen Schloss\, Margaret De Wys\, Stephan Wischerth\, Amanda Linn\, and others\, Branca explains his harmonics over vintage shots of his high-energy conducting style. \n Performance on the subway to combat crime in New York City\, 1979 (12 minutes)\nIn response to the spike in subway violence in 1979\, Arleen Schloss executed a performance art workshop/social experiment to combat crime. Beginning at the Grand Street subway stop in New York\, Schloss and her collaborators sang\, danced\, and performed along the F train to make the subway safe\, encountering baffled commuters\, unsympathetic police\, and bemused spectators. \nSun Daze Away\, 1989 (9 minutes)\nUsing one of the first 8mm video cameras produced\, Schloss shoots a musical and collage-filled travelogue throughout America’s Southwest. Intercutting interviews from local townspeople\, landscapes and news footage\, Sun Daze Away has an experimental quality with bursts of color and sound. \nAbout the Panelists\nStuart Ginsberg\, Moderator\nRoberta Friedman\nChristiane Paul\nSur Rodney (Sur) \nAbout Arleen Schloss\nNew Museum interview\nNew Museum Super 8 and Hi8 Film screenings \nAbout Some Serious Business \nImage: Toyo Tsuchiya\, from No Se No series.

SUMMARY:Bobby Miller A Downtown State of Mind: NYC 1973-1983
DESCRIPTION:March 30 / 7 PM / Free\nAs I look back at the 70s and 80s\, I knew that everyone was on a high of inspiration\, creativity\, sex and passion. Life was music\, life was art\, and life was fashion from your soul. It was never NO. It was let’s GO! —Joey Arias \nBobby Miller narrates the behind the scenes stories captured in his book of photographs\, A Downtown State of Mind\, when New York City’s nightlife scene was at the height of its glory. His photographs capture the period in New York when punk and new wave exploded in the clubs and hipsters made their own extravagant statement through music\, fashion and art. Miller also reads from the Introduction of the book by beloved authoress\, editrix and female-dominant icon Terence Sellers. \nFrom the glitter of punk to new wave\, we rocked dizzily driven by dreams and drugs the last hurrah of a pre-AIDS\, pre-greed\, pre-911 generation. —Cherry Vanilla \nSubjects include John Waters\, Divine\, Cookie Mueller\, Lance Loud\, Salvador Dalí\, Amos Poe\, Anya Phillips\, Debbie Harry\, Richard Hell\, Legs McNeil\, Cherry Vanilla\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, and many more. \nMost people think going out every night is great fun and games\, but going out night after night with your camera and your conscience in tow is considerably more. Somehow Bobby Miller did have a good time and posing for him was always part of a night out. His photos collected here vibrate with those lovely wild nights. —Debbie Harry \nBobby Miller is a performance poet\, writer\, actor and photographer. He is the author of four books of poetry: Benestrific Blonde\, Mouth Of Jane\, Troubleblonde\, and Rigmarole. SUMMARY:Empire Arturo Vega’s Art and Life with the Ramones
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Sandra Schulman and Monte A. Melnick\nMarch 24 / 7 PM / Free\nIt’s our birthday and to celebrate\, Howl! Happening presents a retrospective by the artist who inspired the gallery and so many younger creators and seekers in the neighborhood: Arturo Vega. Concurrent with the exhibition\, curators\, critics\, and dear friends deepen understanding of his life and work\, including a penetrating look at the cultural and political climate in Mexico that nurtured the visual and conceptual framework played out in the studio paintings featured in Empire and his work with the Ramones. Empire runs through April 20\, 2017. A fully illustrated catalog with essays by Dan Cameron\, Jade Dellinger\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, Adam Lehrer\, and Carlo McCormick will be published. \nIn conjunction with the retrospective\, two of Arturo’s closest friends illuminate his life and work. Sandra Hale Schulman\, an arts writer\, curator and film producer\, will contextualize his fine art—speaking about the origins\, iconography\, and evolution of his work\, and his influences from Pop Art to The Pictures Generation. Melnick will be talking about his more than 20 years working with the Ramones\, and the range and relevance of Vega’s (“the fifth Ramone”) contributions to the band. \nSchulman co-founded two galleries in New York City in the 80s: Spiritual America (backed by Vega) and 303 Gallery. Her catalog on Spiritual America was released in the spring of 2015. She curated art shows for galleries in New York; Joshua Tree; Los Angeles; Washington\, D.C.; and Southampton. Through her company\, Slink Productions\, she produced a tribute CD and documentary on Native folk singer Peter La Farge. She released a music video featuring Floyd Westerman\, and John Densmore (of The Doors) and a documentary on Karen Dalton. She is currently an arts columnist for WPB Magazine\, writes for HamptonsArtHub.com and works as a consultant on art and film projects. Her work has appeared in Billboard\, Variety\, Rolling Stone\, Ocean Drive\, Country Music Magazine\, The New York Daily News\, News From Indian Country\, and Entertainment Weekly. Part Cherokee\, she has become a spokesperson for Native American causes on radio and television. \nMonte A. Melnick was tour manager for the Ramones for 20 years (1976-1996) and traveled extensively with the band as worldwide coordinator. Melnick is the author of the book On the Road with the Ramones\, which has been published in seven languages. He is currently 3D Theater & Audio Visual Supervisor for the New York Hall of Science\, featuring the largest collection of hands-on science exhibits in NYC. He was manager of the premier performing arts center Queens Theatre in the Park\, and a member of the rock group Thirty Days Out\, with albums on Reprise/Warner Brothers Records.

SUMMARY:The Full Moon Show with Patricia Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:March 12th / 2pm / Free\nA Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\nThis month’s Full Moon Show will feature a personal connection to it’s origins and will be alive with crossed-wires\, moon worshippers and shockingly possible impossibilities.  The Alien Comic\, Tom Murrin brought the Moon Goddess Luna Macaroona to the people of Earth. Tom’s wife Patricia Sullivan will be here juggling a dynamic lineage with games of chance.

SUMMARY:This Side of Heaven (2016) a film by Todd Verow
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening and Q&A\nThursday\, March 2 / 7 PM / Free\nJoin the auteur emeritus of New Queer Cinema\, Todd Verow\, star Philly Abe\, and special guests for a Q&A following the screening. \nHowl! favorite Philly Abe stars as V\, an older trans woman desperately trying to hold on to her rent-stabilized apartment in New York City. She has endured many tragedies involving former lovers\, friends\, and acquaintances over the 26 years she has lived in her rat\, roach and junkie infested building. She has survived corrupt landlord after corrupt landlord but her struggles have left her agoraphobic and reclusive… \nThe star-studded cast including Brandon Olson\, Penny Arcade\, Justin Rodriguez\, Jake Deckard\, Jayne Nicolletti\, and James Kleinmann rounds out this compelling New York story of one woman’s off-balance life and the fight against gentrification. Produced by Bangor films. \nAbout Todd Verow\nTodd Verow was born in Bangor\, Maine on November 11\, 1966. He started acting and directing plays as a child and making movies while attending Rhode Island School of Design. He made short experimental films and worked as a cinematographer before making his feature film debut with Frisk (which had its European premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in the Forum 20 years ago). Starting his own production company\, Bangor Films\, Todd has directed over 20 features and numerous shorts\, establishing himself as the most prolific auteur emeritus of the New Queer Cinema. He is fiercely independent\, and finances\, writes\, produces\, directs\, photographs\, and edits his movies himself. \nAbout Philly Abe\nPhilly Abe is a multifaceted artist living in New York City. Her acting credits include many films with the Kuchar Brothers (George and Mike Kuchar) and Todd Verow. She is an intuitive performer. While working on a CBC Radio documentary on Lindsay Kemp\, she was offered a scholarship and never looked back. Ritual and trance are an important part of her work\, in an unending chain from political street theater in the 60s to underground film. Her mercurial androgynous performances have gained her a cult following around the world. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Launch of 2017 Poetry Jukebox
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 22 / 7 PM / Free\nOpening reception with the artists and poets as well as a reading by contributors Bob Holman\, Hettie Jones\, Camille Rankine\, David Henderson\, Tommy Pico\, and more. \nPresented by Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project in association with Bowery Arts + Science and the Czech Board of Tourism. \nThe words and voices of dynamic and outspoken writers come to life at the launch of the new lineup for the Poetry Jukebox\, an interactive public art project. Just push a button and hear well-known and up-and-coming young wordsmiths perform their works in the open\, outdoor ambiance of the East Village. The Poetry Jukebox is located on Extra Place directly next to Howl! Happening Gallery (6 East 1st Street between Bowery and 2nd Avenue). \nFor 2017\, we celebrate the intersectionality and diversity of our contemporary culture. Writers across generations\, nationalities\, races\, and orientations have contributed their voices as a collective response to foster dialogue\, social justice\, and respect. The jukebox will feature almost two dozen writers across the American poetic spectrum including Eileen Myles\, Paul Muldoon\, Bob Holman\, and Claudia Rankine; rising stars Tommy Pico\, Dorothea Lasky\, and Lauren Hunter; outspoken slam poets like Mahogany L Brown and Beau Sia; 2016 National Book Award winner Daniel Borzutzky; Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University co-founder Anne Waldman; as well as voices of the Umbra movement Steve Cannon and David Henderson. \nThe Poetry Jukebox was created by coffeehouse owner Ondřej Kobza and cultural manager Michaela Hečková of the Czech Republic as part of Piána na ulici\, (Pianos on the Streets)\, an ongoing project which focuses on the animation of public spaces. Pianos on the Street deploys over a hundred pianos\, chess tables\, and jukeboxes on the streets\, in squares and parks around the globe to make cities more livable\, poetic and playful. Versions of the Poetry Jukebox have been installed in Prague\, Kiev\, London\, Brighton\, and Venice; this is the first and heretofore only North American Poetry Jukebox. \n“We at Czech Tourism promote traveling to the Czech Republic based on the idea that the greatest pleasure of travel comes from connecting with people and cultures through authentic experiences\,” says Jiří Dužár. “And that’s exactly what the Poetry Jukebox was made for. We can’t be more proud to be a part of the installation that speaks the values we hold dear to such a culturally diverse audience here in New York City.” \nIn 2016\, the Poetry Jukebox showcased the Beats during Howl! Happening’s Beat and Beyond festival\, and during the holidays we featured a “punk” line up of original 70s CBGB stars doing their inimitable renditions of Xmas songs. \n2017 Poetry Jukebox Contributors:\nMax Blagg\nDanile Borzutzky\nMahogany L Browne\nSteve Cannon\nMartín Espada\nDavid Henderson\nBob Holman\nLauren Hunter\nHettie Jones\nDorothea Lasky\nAda Límon\nPaul Muldoon\nEileen Myles\nTommy Pico\nCamille Rankine\nClaudia Rankine\nNathaniel Siegel\nBeau Sia\nPamela Sneed\nSparrow\nAnne Waldman\nMatvei Yankelevich

SUMMARY:Warhol & Dalí Panel Discussion with Torsten Otte
DESCRIPTION:February 19 / 7 PM / Free\n“Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol: Encounters in New York and Beyond”\nPanel Discussion with Torsten Otte\, Jade Albert\, George Mason\, Robert Heide\, and William Rothlein \nSalvador Dalí and Andy Warhol were two of the 20th century’s most significant and notorious artists. Led by Otte\, the panelists—all witnesses of encounters between Dalí and Warhol—discuss\, gossip\, and reminisce about these “art celebrities” whose fame was the result of accomplished self-staging\, along with the skillful marketing of their personalities and work. Otte is joined on the panel by photographer Jade Albert\, who shot many photos of Dalí and Warhol together and was a photographer for Interview magazine; playwright Robert Heide\, who worked with Warhol on projects including a filmed version of his play\, The Bed; actor William Rothlein\, a close friend of Dalí and Gala; and George Mason\, a friend of Dalí and Warhol. \nWarhol\, who was a generation younger and a notorious partygoer who provocatively declared that he went “to the opening of anything\, including a toilet seat\,” occupied a spot in public awareness that Dalí had previously paved through his Surrealist antics. \nWhat is less well known is the fact that these two wildly popular artists were in contact with one another on a regular basis throughout the 60s and 70s. In this first-ever comparative study\, Torsten Otte offers a brief biography of both artists before reconstructing their encounters\, which took place mainly in New York. He investigates how the artists felt about one another\, exploring the extent to which Dalí and Warhol were bound by a true artist friendship\, or whether competition and envy played a role. \nTorsten Otte is an attorney and art historian. He is the author of a biography of Salvador Dalí\, published in 2006. He lives in Berlin. Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol: Encounters in New York and Beyond is published by Scheidegger & Spiess – University of Chicago Press and includes more than 60 photographs. \nImage: Andy Warhol\, Candice Bergen\, and Salvador Dalí at the Metropolitan Club in New York City\, March 17\, 1976. SUMMARY:BETH B Voyeur
DESCRIPTION:A Video\, Sculpture and Photographic Installation \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present BETH B’s Voyeur\, an installation of video\, photography and sculpture that explores the varied perceptions of the female and male gaze. The exhibition enlists the viewer’s implicit participation with transgressive imagery and invites each person to examine their own boundaries and preconceptions regarding sexuality and gender. A new BETH B publication\, Nudes\, will be published by Howl! to coincide with the exhibition. \nBETH B is renowned for her groundbreaking films from the 70s such as Black Box\, Vortex\, and The Offenders. Throughout her prolific career\, she has produced more than 30 films in the documentary\, experimental and narrative genres\, working independently and through television. Her explosive film Exposed (2013)\, and many other films have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Wexner Center for the Arts\, and Walker Art Center. Her films have been screened at the New York Film Festival\, Sundance Film Festival\, Berlin International Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, Locarno International Film Festival and more. \nHer new feature documentary film Call Her Applebroog had its world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art and opened at the Metrograph theater in New York City and other theatrical venues. The film reveals renowned artist Ida Applebroog’s groundbreaking artwork\, which has inquired into the polemics of human relations\, but more intimately\, is about her dramatic struggle to overcome adversity. Her personal story is one that Beth B knows well—Ida is her mother and colleague. \nMore About BETH B

SUMMARY:The Full Moon Show with Aru Hanger\, Ava Vardiman and Luna Macroona
DESCRIPTION:A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\n\nFriday\, February 10\, 2017 / 2 PM\nWhat does it mean to be dubbed a Luna Macaroona protégé? It means you’re smart and funny and maybe just a little bit crazy. Aru Hanger fits this bill\, as a stand out performer who wowed our audience when his class performed at a recent Full Moon Show. Aru is a student at Eugene Lang The New School\, where his interests range from writing and performance to culture and philosophy. An artist working with duality and ambiguity\, sanity versus reality\, he will be performing with Ava Vardiman in his second HOWL Happening Full Moon Show performance. Tag team nutcases Salley Mae and Tony Stinkmetal do the warm up\, whipping the crowd into a frenzy of anticipation for the main event.

SUMMARY:Jonny Detiger Amplified Space
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project Presents\nA Kaleidoscope Installation for the Senses\n \nExploring how art interacts with space and how this interaction can yield surprising\, unexpected gifts\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present artist and designer Jonny Detiger’s Amplified Space. Detiger’s work celebrates life and joyfully bridges the gap between the mundane and the sublime. For this show at Howl!\, Detiger constructs a colorful walk-in environment in constant flux where the viewer is invited to participate\, interact\, and influence their changing surroundings. \nResonating with Howl! Happening’s connection with the music scene and Allen Kaprow’s sense of communal play\, Detiger’s exhibition and installation consists of three multicolored Plexiglas sculptural spaces that produce a complex pattern of constantly changing colors and shapes\, as well as independent\, interactive art works within these walls. Viewers may enter at different points in the installation and be enveloped by a kaleidoscope of optical and color combinations. These subtle nuances influence the perception and feeling of space—the “vibe” if you will—as the viewer actively participates in the variable nature of the work. \n“I am an artist and designer who through my work have always explored the understanding and communication of the human condition of happiness\,” says Detiger. “Using color\, sound\, smell and shape\, I design living interactive art environments with the aim of heightening this positive state of mind.” \nAmong the works contained in the kaleidoscopic walk-in sculptures is Boom Boom Box\, a sound installation with four individual seats that activate loops randomly generated by sitting on a chair. Sounds and beats create unique compositions depending on where\, when and with whom the viewer is sitting. Love Shower is a wall mounted\, metallic sculpture connected with a seat containing a speaker that plays “Love to Love You Baby” and showers the participant with aromatic bubbles infused with the essence of a Hawaiian flower known in folklore for its power to induce happiness. The visually dazzling Spin-O-Rama is a series of kinetic light sculptures that produce hypnotic\, mesmerizing patterns. Drum n’ Bass\, an interactive video projection\, has one screen displaying a drummer in front while the opposite features a bass player. When a viewer approaches the screen of the drummer or the bass player\, they will start playing. One musician or both can play at the same time until the viewer retreats. \nFocused on a comprehensive visual and aural immersive experience\, the viewer becomes an integral partner in creation of the work as they activate and direct the action\, progressing through the encompassing\, interactive\, emotionally bright and engaging works. \nDetiger grew up in Holland and attended school in Switzerland before studying business and economics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the London School of Economics and Political Science. His signature style of intricate art and mixed media sculpture explores human interaction through a kaleidoscope of iconic imagery\, text\, color and light. His furniture designs have won critical acclaim for postmodern excellence and have been featured in design books and international design magazines. \n“Art\, fashion\, design and music have always been an integral part of my life and art\,” says Detiger. “I move freely between these disciplines and create projects of ‘living art’ environments that incorporate sound\, smell\, design and color. Happiness\, humor and positivity are common themes that run through all of my work.” \n

SUMMARY:The Please Kill Me Holiday Party
DESCRIPTION:December 20 / 7 PM / Free\nWith readings by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain \nLurid\, insolent\, disorderly\, funny\, sometimes gross\, sometimes mean and occasionally touching . . . Resounds with authenticity.       —The New York Times \n Howl! Happening welcomes Legs and Gillian in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their quintessential\, uncensored oral history. A Time Out and Daily News Top 10 Book of the Year upon its initial release\, Please Kill Me is the first oral history of the most nihilist of all pop movements. Iggy Pop\, Danny Fields\, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone\, Malcom McLaren\, Jim Carroll\, and scores of other famous and infamous punk figures lend their voices to this definitive account of that outrageous\, explosive era. From its origins in the twilight years of Andy Warhol’s New York reign to its last gasps as 80s corporate rock\, the phenomenon known as punk is scrutinized\, eulogized\, and idealized by the people who were there and who made it happen. \nTelling it like it is . . . that’s what Howl! is about. \n  \n
