SUMMARY:TABBOO! New Paintings!
DESCRIPTION:“Tabboo!’s portraits have an arresting honesty.“\n—Sean Mellyn\, Bomb\, 2013\nHowl! Happening is pleased to present a series of new paintings by Tabboo!—a creative force in the Downtown/East Village/Alphabet City worlds of art\, performance\, and nightclubs for close to 35 years. Well known as a painter\, Tabboo!’s subjects have ranged from still lifes to cityscapes—and he is renowned for his portraits. On view will be 14 portraits of Tabboo’s closest friends\, giving these new works an immediacy and potent emotional charge. \nThe portraits’ expressionist tone and vibrancy are embued with the innermost thoughts and personality of both the artist and the sitters. In these portraits of his friends\, we see Tabboo!’s own exuberant personality and his close\, personal relationship to his subjects. The portraits capture his intimates with a fresh\, emphathetic eye\, expressing their essential personality and the psychic depth beneath the painted surface of the linen. Poignant and loving\, they are a record of a cross-section of his friends—some well known in the downtown scene\, others just part of his tribe—and also a tribute to the creativity and continuum of culture that is alive and thriving—right here\, right now! \nTabboo!’s portraits recall the style of Alice Neel and Diane Arbus . . . Similar to Arbus\, there is a poignancy to Tabboo!’s portrayal of his subjects. They are shown alone and isolated in empty space. They connect directly to the viewer. Like Alice Neel\, Tabboo! foreshortens arms\, he adds vernacular details\, he brings out the warmth and domesticity of the setting\, and the networks of friendships.\n                               —Rupert Goldsworthy\, Tabboo! catalog essay \nLoaded with symbolism and emotive brushwork\, these portraits bring out magical details of the sitters’ inner and outer lives. The paintings vibrate with an uncanny life force. Clearly Tabboo! knows these people well! \nAlongside Mark Morrisroe\, Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson\, Tabboo! was a member of the so-called Boston School. Arriving at the wide open creative arena of the East Village in the 80s\, Tabboo!’s work is a riotous mixture of DIY energy and high camp. He has collaborated with countless artists\, musicians\, writers\, and performers and his distinctive style has had a profound impact on leading cultural figures of his generation. \nProlific in a way that borders on compulsivity\, [Tabboo!] was not only one of the most imaginative figures in the early-’80s East Village art scene: he also illustrated our world\, lending his hand to the cover art of era-defining records by the likes of Deee-Lite and Book of Love and producing a seemingly infinite array of flyers and ads for the most celebrated nightclubs of the day\, like the Pyramid Club and Mudd Club. He was just as likely to be found inside those clubs\, designing their interiors or commanding the stage as Tabboo! Of all that\, [Tabboo!] simply says\, ‘I worked in nightclubs when nightlife actually mattered.’\n                                    —Carlo McCormick\, Paper magazine\, 2013 \nTabboo! continues to make his mark. He recently expanded his artistic range in a collaboration with Marc Jacobs on a collection featuring his signature work. Tabboo! and the collection have been featured in an article by Tama Janowitz in August’s Harpers Bazaar and will also be featured in Le Monde in September. His work will be included in the Museum of Modern Art’s upcoming exhibition about the legendary Club 57 and his book Tabboo! was published by Damiani on the occasion of his major exhibition at Participant\, Inc. (New York). He has also had major shows at the University of Nevada\, Reno; AMP Market\, Provincetown; Vox Populi\, Philadelphia; Gallery Mitterand\, Paris; Gavlak Gallery\, Los Angeles; and The Museum of Santiago de Compostela\, Spain. \n“The great thing about being an artist is the freedom to be myself\,” he says. \nSPECIAL EVENT\nOctober 27\, 2016 / 7 PM\nFall Costume Extravaganza Produced and Directed by Tabboo!\nAn artsy\, over the top drag show in the style of classic Hollywood glamour\, the costume extravaganza will feature Agosto Machado\, Brandon Olson\, Flloyd\, Trish Astor\, Bobbie\, Soigne\, and\, of course\, Tabboo! A tribute to old-school queens\, expect tons of sequins\, yards of tulle\, and feathers galore. Check Howl! Happening’s website for updates. \nA fully illustrated catalog with texts by Rupert Goldsworthy\, Brandon Olson\, and others accompanies the show. \nVideo of Tabboo! talking about his artistic process here.

Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \n  \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nImage: Jim Moore

SUMMARY:Writers Block 2016 Presents Paul Iacono The Last Great Dame
DESCRIPTION:October 18\, 2016 / 7 PM \nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival\nA New Play \nWhat does it mean to be a performing artist—first\, last and always? Broadway legend Luella Merritt can answer that. When the 88-year-old firecracker injures herself weeks before opening night of her latest (and probably last) Broadway musical\, the show is put on hold. Her indomitable will to perform is challenged further when the show’s producer and longtime friend\, Langston Moorehead\, is quoted blaming the accident on Luella’s lifetime battle with booze. \nMaking matters worse\, Merritt’s longtime assistant suddenly quits\, citing years of abuse. While bitterly recovering alone at her residence at the Regency\, Luella serendipitously reencounters Chip\, a young struggling actor she shared the stage with a decade prior. As Merritt convinces Chip to become her assistant and help her save the show\, an unlikely bond flourishes in this madcap comedic-drama about an almost forgotten legend’s last days surviving showbiz. The story is loosely inspired by my relationship with the late\, great\, Elaine Stritch. \nA graduate of Manhattan’s Professional Performing Arts High School\, Iacono is best known for his portrayal of the title character on MTV’s The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Paul was first featured on The Rosie O’Donnell Show at age eight\, after she discovered his unique talents for impersonating Frank Sinatra and Ethel Merman. Favorite stage credits include Mercury Fur (The New Group)\, Bridget Everett’s Rock Bottom at The Public Theater\, Noël Coward’s Sail Away starring Elaine Stritch at Carnegie Hall\, Mame opposite Christine Ebersole at The Paper Mill Play House\, as well as Children of Eden (Original Cast Recording)\, Transport Group’s The Dark at the Top of the Stairs with Donna Lynne Champlin\, and Michele Pawk and John Guare’s Landscape of the Body at Signature Theater starring Lili Taylor and Sherie Rene Scott. \nOn the big screen Paul starred in MGM’s remake of Fame\, Drew Barrymore’s Animal\, Darren Stein’s G.B.F. and is upcoming in “Baked In Brooklyn\,” “Delinquents\,” and “Dating My Mother” with Kathy Najimy. He was also seen last year on HBO’s Girls. \nIacono’s first written play\, Prince/Elizabeth\, premiered at The Teatro LATEA Theater\, and his musical memoir\, Where’s The Fucking Kid? with John McDaniel at 54 Below. Currently\, Paul is premiering his newest cabaret show\, Psychedelic Hedonism\, at Joe’s Pub on Tuesday\, September 6th. He hosts a bi-weekly Wednesday night party\, “HUMP” at Rumpus Room on the Lower East Side\, ranked second best gay dance party by New York magazine. SUMMARY:Charles Atlas Son of Sam and Delilah
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found\nOctober 19th / 7 PM / Free\nCreated by pioneering multimedia artist Charles Atlas\, Son of Sam and Delilah is “a dark vision of an America where life is cheap and even the moments of tenderness have a life threatening edge.” An amalgam of crosscut scenes\, Son of Sam and Delilah features New York performance luminaries John Kelly (as Delilah)\, Hapi Phace\, Almon Grimsted\, Brian Butterick\, Anna Levine-Thompson\, Casey MacDonald\, Lucy Sexton & Anne Iobst (Dancenoise)\, and Sunny\, in the late 1980s through 1991. \nAtlas explained in 2012: “[Son of Sam and Delilah] was unusual because I had people to help\, and I didn’t know where it was going at first. I only realized after I made it what it was about—all my friends who were dying of AIDS.” \nThis evening concludes with a post-screening discussion with Atlas\, and Stuart Comer\, Chief Curator\, Department of Media and Performance Art\, Museum of Modern Art. \nThe screening is a part of Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found (which will run from October 13 to November 19)\, curated by Ishmael Houston-Jones and Will Rawls. The program will reflect on the AIDS hysteria of 1981 to 1996 through the presentation of performances\, conversations\, film screenings\, a print catalog\, a zine project\, and a vigil. \nThe Platform is named after a trio of dances first performed at Danspace by John Bernd in 1981. Bernd\, who died of AIDS in 1988\, was one of the first choreographers to bring representations of gay sexuality and the disease to the stage. \nHouston-Jones asked\, “How is one able to\, or can one\, explain the pain\, confusion\, rage\, and fear that HIV/AIDS caused a whole generation?” He added that the series will “try to recover the generation of mentors\, role models\, and muses” who died from the disease. \nMore about Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found \nArtforum: Danspace Project to Launch Largest Curatorial Project in its History

SUMMARY:Writers Block 2016 Presents Mimi Stern-Wolfe and Downtown Music Productions Pins and Needles By Harold Rome
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 25\, 2016 / 7 PM\nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival\nA lighthearted look at young workers in a changing society in the middle of America’s most politically engaged city. —PBS.org \nFirst produced on Broadway from 1937 to 1940\, the title Pins and Needles was created by Max Danish\, long-time editor of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union newspaper Justice. The play looked at current events from a pro-union standpoint and skits spoofed everything from Fascist dictators to bigots and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sponsored by the Union\, the original cast was made up of cutters\, basters\, and sewing machine operators. \nWord-of-mouth was so positive that the cast abandoned their day jobs and the production opened on Broadway\, with a full performance schedule of eight shows per week. New songs and skits were introduced every few months to keep the show topical. According to American author\, teacher and theatre historian John Kenrick\, Pins and Needles “is the only hit ever produced by a labor union\, and the only time when a group of unknown non-professionals brought a successful musical to Broadway.” About Downtown Music Productions and Mimi Stern Wolfe \nTICKETS: $20 Suggested Donation\nLimited Space. SUMMARY:Paul Tschinkel ART/new york No. 61 Robert Mapplethorpe
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 3 / 7 PM / Free\nHowl! Happening is pleased to present Robert Mapplethorpe\, another in filmmaker Paul Tschinkel’s probing ART/new york series\, which profiles influential artists at crucial moments in the careers. Filmed in 1983 in his downtown loft\, the youthful and mythic artist talks with Marc Miller about his ideas\, inspiration\, and the highly charged subject matter depicted in his work. \nRobert Mapplethorpe explores his photography\, his relationship to the downtown New York art world\, and the S&M club scene prevalent in the 80s. His infamously explicit and groundbreaking photographs of the gay leather New York Underground made him a cause célèbre. At the same time\, the quality and artistic achievement inherent in his series of portraits\, sensual flowers\, and transgressive erotic subjects elevated his work and drew the attention of influential dealers\, curators and collectors. \nThe film includes interviews with Jack Walls\, Mapplethorpe’s partner; artist Brice Marden; Holly Solomon\, his first dealer; the photographer’s father Harry Mapplethorpe; and Father Stack\, the artist’s priest in Floral Park\, Long Island. Also commenting are curator Richard Marshall\, brother Edward Mapplethorpe\, photographer Gilles Larrain\, lawyer Michael Ward Stout\, artist Louise Bourgeois\, and biographer Patricia Morrisroe. \nPaul Tschinkel is a painter with an MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture. In the early 70s he turned to video as an art form and thus became one of the first artists in this new medium. In 1974 he turned to the fledgling New York cable TV system\, producing Paul Tschinkel’s Inner Tube\, a half hour weekly art gallery program. In 1979\, he began taping young bands in New York clubs for his cable show\, a program that ran for three years and inspired and presaged MTV. Since then\, he has produced a video series on contemporary art called ART/new york (artnewyork.org/store) of which Robert Mapplethorpe is No. 61. \nImage: Robert Mapplethrope

SUMMARY:Vangeline Theater Queer Butoh - Transcending the Identity of Sex
DESCRIPTION:November 9th and 10th / 7 PM / Free\nPerformances by Malin Andreasson\, Will Atkins\, Mandy Caughey\, Shawn Escarciga\, and Davey Mitchell. \nPanel Discussion with the artists following the performances moderated by Vangeline\, Founder of New York  Butoh Institute and Artistic Director of Vangeline Theater and Brian Butterick\, actor\, singer\, Downtown legend.\nAdditional panelists: Ranardo-Domeico Grays\, Artistic Director of VISIONS Contemporary Ballet\, and CUNY actor/dancer Rafael Liriano. \nHowl! Happening in association with The New York Butoh Institute and The Vangeline Theater is pleased to present an evening of Butoh performances and community discussion with five LGBT/Queer Butoh artists. The two evenings feature performances followed by a panel discussion. The artists will talk about how Butoh has been instrumental in articulating or facing the unique challenges they face as LGBT artists. \n“Butoh is essentially the dance of the marginalized\, and the LGBT population is still largely marginalized in the world\,” says Vangeline France\, curator of this series. “Most of these artists feel that they found a place of freedom and acceptance through Butoh and it was important to give them a voice to express this.” \nIn Butoh\, the desire to play with notions of both “masculine” and “feminine” has been expressed in performance methodology by both male and female artists. The five contemporary artists will create new work and speak about how they integrate Butoh into their art and lives. \nAt its origin\, the introduction of Butoh in Japan was widely controversial. The first Butoh performance Kinjiki (Forbidden Colors)\, created by Tatsumi Hijikata in 1958\, caused deep repulsion amongst its spectators. Inspired by the work of homosexual author Jean Genet\, Kinjiki took its name and inspiration from Yukio Mishima’s book Forbidden Color and dealt with homosexuality\, a profoundly taboo subject at the time. \nFeatured performers will be: \nMalin Andreasson\nI feel that there are parts in me which are damaged because of the constant daily impression of how a woman should be\, look like\, act like\, live like…I find that Butoh is helping me as a femme queer artist feel that I am allowed to merge in whichever sex or sexuality I want. \nWill Atkins (Thurs\, Nov. 10 only)\nWhile I feel like other performance genres allow me to explore certain facets at certain times\, Butoh allows me to access a space within myself that is everything and nothing. This includes aspects I sometimes feel closed off to\, including my sexuality; a part of myself I sometimes find myself at odds with.   \nMandy Caughey\nDespite my absolute attraction to women\, I often struggle with feeling like I fully fit in with the LGBTQ identity…. In dancing Butoh\, I fit in. I feel completely secure and absolute in my sense of self and sexuality. All my questions cease as my body answers.   \n Shawn Escarciga (Wed\, Nov. 9 only)\nButoh is a form and a discipline that allows me to express my “otherness” safely without label\, without gender\, without restriction of time and place. It has been a validating process for me that is ongoing—I am allowed to be what I am and continue to unfold into more of myself without fear of persecution\, rejection or violence.   \n Davey Mitchell\n“There is no place like HOME\,” is the phrase that comes to mind when I think of Butoh. “Home” in the sense of finding one’s self—a completeness of being\, and within that being is your journey\, your life experiences\, struggles and accomplishments\, happiness and sorrow.    \nARTISTS BIOS and MORE ABOUT QUEER BUTOH \n PHOTO: @ 2011 Michael Blase

SUMMARY:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery FSW
DESCRIPTION:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective\nBob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW \nNovember 4 – December 17\, 2016 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 4 from 6-8pm \nPanel Discussion with special guests Carlo McCormick\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, and Adam Lehrer on Saturday\, November 5 at 1pm\nFort Myers\, FLORIDA: Florida SouthWestern State College is delighted to announce Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (located on FSW’s Lee County campus). Opening with a public reception on Friday\, November 4th from 6-8pm\, this ambitious survey runs through December 17th and will include guest lectures\, performances and a panel discussion exploring Arturo Vega’s broader impact on popular culture and contextualizing his work as a visual artist. A collaboration with The Arturo Vega Foundation in NYC\, Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective is the late Mexican-born artist’s first solo U.S. museum retrospective and features photography\, collage and a number of iconic canvases from the artist’s Supermarket and Silver Dollar series (begun in the 1970s); his Flags and so-called “word paintings” from Insults and other series produced during the 1980s\, ‘90s and aughts. \n  \nEscaping the repressive violence of an authoritarian regime under Mexico’s “perfect dictatorship” in the late ‘60s\, Arturo Vega made his way to New York City to study English\, philosophy and photography at the New School for Social Research in the early 1970’s. Having discovered Elvis as a child and later co-directing a touring production of The Who’s “Tommy” at the National University in Mexico City\, Vega understood the revolutionary and transformative power of music\, theatre/performance and art. While working on his first painting series of supermarket signs\, he befriended members of The Ramones\, a rock & roll band that would soon play their first show (and would decades later be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame). Designing the Ramones’ ubiquitous logo based on the Great Seal of the United States\, painting backdrops for their stage and creating a lighting scheme loosely adapted from Albert Speer’s Lichtdom to enhance their effect\, Vega created visual imagery that defined the transgressive aesthetic of punk rock by co-opting and questioning symbols of power. \n  \nIn numerous group shows since the 1970’s\, Vega’s work has more recently been the subject of one-person exhibitions at CB’s 313 Gallery/New York City (1992)\, Raleigh Studios/Miami Beach (Curated by Sandra Schulman in 1994)\, Galería OMR/México\, D.F. (2011)\, Casa Redonda\, Chihuahua/Mexico (2012) and at Howl! Happening in NYC in 2015 and 2016. As Vega once said: “Art connects to the eternal – demanding fast changes and a reckless appetite for truth\, justice and a better way of life.” Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery will draw parallels and explore interests shared by Arturo Vega and our gallery namesake. For Rauschenberg\, “(Art was) a means to function thoroughly and passionately in a world that has a lot more to it than paint.” \n  \nMore about us: The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery was founded as The Gallery of Fine Art in 1979 on the Lee County campus of Florida SouthWestern State College/FSW (then Edison Community College). On June 4th 2004\, the Gallery of Fine Art was renamed the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery to honor and commemorate our long time association and friendship with the artist. Over more than three decades until his death\, the Gallery worked closely with Rauschenberg to present world premiere exhibitions including multiple installations of the ¼ Mile or Two Furlong Piece. The artist insisted on naming the space the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (versus the “Robert Rauschenberg Gallery”) as it was consistent with the intimate\, informal relationship he maintained with both our local Southwest Florida community and FSW. \n These events are open to the public\, free of charge. \n Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday 11 am – 3 pm \nClosed Sundays and Holidays \n Tel: (239) 489-9313 \nWeb: www.RauschenbergGallery.com \n  \n

Dam! Dam! Dam! \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! \nPhoto copyright Eric McNatt 2016

SUMMARY:TOYO TSUCHIYA Invisible Underground
DESCRIPTION:[Tsuchiya’s images] feel like reports of life on another\, hipper planet\, of which little trace would remain were it not for his persistent and attentive recording eye.\n—Holland Cotter\, “Six O’Clock Observed\,” New York Times\, 1999 \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present a survey of the work Toyo Tsuchiya\, including photographs from the 99 nights at No Se No\, a ten foot print of his iconic image of a garden party in full swing amidst the rubble and ruin or a tenement building\, and other series that capture the Lower East Side during its heyday in the 1980s. His photographs embody Toyo’s search for human connection and identity. \nAlso featured will be a large-scale\, life-sized installation depicting workers in Chinatown on their lunch break with the pathos and presence reminiscent of Ed Kienholz\, as well as new\, colorful paintings inspired by 30 years of shooting in New York City. \nTsuchiya is best known for his photographs of NYC’s Lower East Side art scene in the 1980’s and as an originator of the legendary Rivington School. In these highly personalized images of New York’s Lower East Side since 1980\, Tsuchiya documented what was happening around him—the people\, performance art\, and the Lower East Side art scene—and especially the legendary underground movement of the collaborative Rivington School. \nBorn near Mt. Fuji in Japan\, Tsuchiya grew up in Kyushu and Yokohama. After graduating from the Kanagawa Ken Technical High School for Industrial Design he began his career as an artist. Living in Osaka\, Yokohama\, and Tokyo\, he studied and exhibited paintings\, drawings and collage within a small circle of the 1970’s art world in Tokyo. In the late 70’s he turned to photography\, and soon moved to New York City. \nTsuchiya was a creative force behind the No Se No Social Club\, the stage for many art happenings\, including the 99 Nights\, a marathon of free performances and exhibitions. In his photographs\, Tsuchiya captures the style\, energy\, and free-spirited creativity of the time\, and contextualized these happenings in a fine-art lineage. \nTsuchiya photographed the great performers of the era\, including Stelarc\, Jack Smith\, Tehching Hsieh\, Monty Cantsin and Karen Black\, to name a few. He also curated shows with now notable artists like Ai Weiwei. His work has\, as Tsuchiya acknowledges\, “become part of the underground history of the Lower East Side art and life of the 80s. All of my intention and passion of the 80s remains in those images.” \nIconoclastic and against the grain\, Holland Cotter says in his review: His subject wasn’t the professionalized East Village gallery phenomenon but the fringe activity taking place in the working class\, primarily Hispanic neighborhood centered below Houston Street on Rivington Street. There\, art\, music and performance intermingled; graffiti and Neo-Expression held their own after their vogue had passed elsewhere. The atmosphere was squatter-anarchic; artists\, collectively referred to as the Rivington School\, met in clubs and worked in the street. \nIn recent years\, Tsuchiya has turned to collage\, drawing\, sculpture and mixed media and continues to explore new media and outlets for his relentless creativity.

SUMMARY:The Rivington School: 80s New York Underground
DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2016\nIn honor of the exhibition Toyo Tsuchiya Invisible Underground and the publication of Rivington School: 80s New York Underground\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present the launch of a new book celebrating the Rivington School. Iconoclastic and populist\, the Rivington School is an outgrowth of the No Se No social club and gallery founded in 1983 by “Cowboy” Ray Kelly\, a one-time farmer from Texas\, who maintained that “anyone can be an artist\,” that everything is a work of art. The School was also the origin of the Rivington Sculpture Garden\, a guerrilla sculpture space containing the massive\, welded metal junk sculpture that the group has become known for. \nA vortex of creativity\, Rivington School artists devised ways to live\, create art\, and exhibit with very little money and virtually no media attention. As David Dalton says in his essay for Tsuchiya’s catalog\, “It was a scene so underground that it never came up for air.” \nDecember 8\, 2016 / 6 PM\nR.U.O.K. OR WAT?\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground\nPublication Party\nJoin editor Istvan Kantor for an evening celebrating the new tome including a ritual book burning of the first copy by Monty Cantsin accompanied by Angel Eyedealism\, as well as Rivington School contributors\, and Black Dog publisher Duncan McCorquodale from London.\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground documents the work of the Rivington School group of artists that emerged during the turbulent 80s in the heart of the Lower East Side. The RS set an internationally important precedent for contemporary alternative practice. The book explores the underground scene that formed around this group of artists\, named after an abandoned public school building on Rivington Street. Here\, like-minded street artists\, sculptors and performers set about to create works that refuted and challenged an increasingly commercialized art world. \n

SUMMARY:R.U.O.K. Or Wat?
DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2016 / 6 PM / Free\nPublication Party Rivington School: 80s New York Underground \nPart of The Rivington School Performance Series \nIn honor of the exhibition Toyo Tsuchiya Invisible Underground and the publication of Rivington School: 80s New York Underground\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present a series of events that look deeply into the art and practice of the Rivington School. Join editor Istvan Kantor for an evening celebrating the new tome\, including a ritual book burning of first copy by Monty Cantsin accompanied by Angel Eyedealism\, as well as Rivington School contributors\, and Black Dog publisher Duncan McCorquodale from London. \n Rivington School: 80s New York Underground documents the work of the Rivington School group of artists that emerged during the turbulent 80s in the heart of the Lower East Side. \nSituated across the road from the school\, the No Se No social club—also run by Rivington School founder “Cowboy” Ray Kelly—acted as a meeting and performance space for many of the artists involved\, such as Kembra Pfahler\, Dragan Ilic\, Arleen Schloss\, Taylor Mead\, Michael Carter\, Jack Waters\, and Phoebe Legere\, and was where the renowned 99 Nights of performance took place in 1983\, documented every night by the photographer Toyo Tsuchiya for exhibition the following day. The School was also the origin of the guerrilla sculpture space the Rivington Sculpture Garden\, which opened in 1985 and was destroyed more than once by city authorities. Its construction/destruction is documented in the Super 8 film Anti-Credo by Monty Cantsin aka Istvan Kantor. Formed in a vacant lot next to the No Se No club\, the evolving collective space was the site of the massive\, welded metal junk sculpture that the group has become known for. \nThe Rivington School gave rise to a number of highly regarded artists\, including E.F.Higgins III\, Ray Kelly\, David Mora Catlett\, Shalom Neuman\, Toyo Tsuchiya\, Istvan Kantor\, Linus Coraggio\, Paolo Buggiani\, Tovey Halek\, Jack Vengrow\, Ken Hiratsuka\, Gloria McLean\, FA-Q (Kevin Wendall)\, Julius Klein\, Geoff “Gizmo” Gilmore\, JIM C\, Angela Idealism and Peter Missing. \nAbout the Rivington School \n  \n
