DESCRIPTION:When Jackie Met Ethyl\nGuest curated by Dan Cameron \nThis exhibition considers the cultural and historical impact of Jackie Curtis (1947-1985) and Ethyl Eichelberger (1945-1990) two of the most influential figures from the East Village’s heyday as a cauldron of transgressive gender-twisting performance. Although both came from the same generation and shared an overlapping support base\, an instinctive feminist outlook\, and a deep grounding in the absurd\, Curtis and Eichelberger were very different figures\, and are not believed to have known each other personally. \nJackie Curtis was born John Curtis Holder\, Jr. on the Lower East Side\, and mostly raised by his maternal grandmother\, known as Slugger Ann\, whose eponymous bar on 2nd Avenue was a well-known refuge for social misfits. A member of Andy Warhol’s original network of Superstars — along with Candy Darling and Holly Woodlawn –\, Curtis’ stage debut was at age 17 in Tom Eyen’s Miss Nefertiti Regrets\, followed by roles in the Paul Morrissey films Flesh (1968) and Women in Revolt (1971). Aside from possessing a mesmerizing screen presence\, Curtis’ greatest artistic influence was as playwright and songwriter for the productions Glamour\, Glory and Gold; Vain Victory; and Heaven Grand in Amber Orbit\, all of which featured transsexual characters. The Jackie Curtis signature ‘look’ — glitter and lipstick combined with ripped stockings and/or housedresses – was widely adopted in the 1970s and 1980s\, and in 2004 the documentary Superstar in a Housedress brought the Curtis legend to a new generation. \nEthyl Eichelberger was born James Roy Eichelberger in rural Illinois\, and spent much of his first thirty years studying acting and working in regional repertory theater\, eventually becoming an expert wigmaker and member of Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company. In 1975 he legally changed his first name to Ethyl and introduced a flamboyant stage presence\, singing while playing piano and accordion\, and radically re-conceiving classic characters like King Lear and Medea as drag cabaret. Although Eichelberger appeared in films\, Broadway theater productions\, and an HBO series for kid\, and was a successful commercial actor\, his main impact was as a performer in intimate East Village venues like P.S. 122\, Pyramid Lounge\, 8BC\, and s.n.a.f.u.. In the course of more than thirty original and adapted plays\, his was nearly always the title role\, often with multiple male and female characters switching parts\, and occasional acrobatic or circus stunts thrown in for equal measure. \nWhen Jackie Met Ethyl will feature a number of different media\, key among them video documentation – by Nelson Sullivan\, among others — of plays\, poetry and songs written and performed by the two artists\, along with script excerpts\, props and memorabilia from productions of these and other performances. Also included are images of Eichelberger and Curtis by photographers Peter Hujar\, Dona McAdams\, Jack Mitchell\, Billy Sullivan\, Ande Whyland\, and Kirila Faeh\, to demonstrate how the legacy of these two artists continues to influence culture\, When Jackie Met Ethyl will also include the 1994 sculpture\, Big Round Flat\, from A Flower for Ethyl series\, by Oliver Herring\, and recent interpretations of Curtis’ and Eichelbergers’ work by contemporary artists. \nThe accompanying publication will include an introductory essay by curator Dan Cameron\, along with texts by Penny Arcade\, Brian Butterick\, Joe E. Jeffreys\, Robert Heide\, Craig Highberger\, Agosto Machado\, and Joan Moossy. \n

Happening and Bowery Arts + Science are pleased to present a week-long\, multi-venue celebration of the Beats and their influence on American culture. The celebration includes readings\, music\, and remembrances of the times and its continuing influence by Michael McClure\, Ed Sanders\, Bob Holman\, Peter Hale\, Bob Rosenthal\,  Len Chandler and others. \n8 PM: First Blues Re-release Party\nA celebration of the new 3 CD box set LAST WORD ON FIRST BLUES\, a collection of Allen’s singing/songwriting 1971-1984. There will be a round-table discussion led by the box set’s producer Pat Thomas with Hank O’Neal\, and musicians David Amram\, Steven Taylor\, David Mansfield\, and Jon Sholle followed by a live performance by them. \n9 PM: The David Amram Quartet \nOngoing\nAlso\, beginning Friday and continuing through the course of the week\, painter Mark Turgeon will create a timeline installation at Howl! Happening\,  “An Incomplete History of Beat\,” and a jukebox of Beat poetry will be installed in Extra Place\, the alley next to the gallery.

Happening\, 6 East 1st Street\n2 PM: Remembering d.a. levy and Reminiscing on the value of Bookstores\nReadings of d.a. levy’s poetry and a panel discussion featuring Ed Sanders\, David Kirschenbaum\, Mike Golden\, Kent Taylor (via Skype)\, and others.\nTurning his native Cleveland into a capital of Beat culture\, people’s poet\, publisher\, non-comformist\, pamphleteer\, and counter-cultural icon d.a. levy embodies the spirit of the Beat underground. The event also shines a light on another Cleveland Beat centerpiece\, Jim Lowell’s Asphodel Bookshop\, raided in 1966 for selling obscene literature.  From there we journey to other bookstores like City Lights\, 8th Street Books\, St. Marks Bookshop and Peace Eye Bookstore\, sacred sites that were the hubs and homes of the Beat poets and so many others. \n4 PM: The Six Gallery Reading\nMichael McClure orchestrates a celebration for the Six Gallery reading Oct.7\, 1955 in San Francisco\, when Ginsberg first read “Howl” to the public. The legendary reading McClure’s first reading ever\, and also included\, included Philip Lamantia\, Gary Snyder\, and Philip Whalen.  Kenneth Rexroth was the MC\, and Jack Kerouac kept busy passing around the red wine jug\, shouting “Go! Go! Go!” and recording the scene in Dharma Bums. McClure will present as Kenneth Rexroth and be joined by Ava Chin as Gary Snyder\, Hettie Jones as Allen Ginsberg\, Max Blagg as Philip Lamantia\, Andy Clausen as Philip Whalen and Nikhil Melnechuk as McClure\, himself. \n5:30 PM: We Remember\nA gathering of the Beat poets and others to share poetry\, stories\, memories\, and personal anecdotes of those we’ve lost as they are added to a Wall of Names. John Giorno will open the proceedings with “The Death of William Burroughs.”  Photos and short film will be shown\, and the audience will share memories and names aloud and on a remembrance wall\, alongside Mark Turgeon‘s ongoing live-painting\, “An Incomplete History of Beat.” The evening will close with a group reading from Ginsberg‘s “Kaddish.” \n8 PM: Concert \nWe’ll all dance over to Bowery Electric for a concert featuring Peter Stampfel The Fugs\, and The Last Poets\, with Abiodun Oyewole. Umar bin Hasan\, and Babatunde.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 4\, 8:00 PM\n$15 Bowery Electric\, 327 Bowery\, New York \nA diverse and influential group of musicians come together to raise the roof\, tell it like it is\, and share the joy of sounds and messages originating in the Beat era. \nPeter Stampfel: A singer/songwriter and fiddler\, Stampfel was a member of the psychedelic folk band The Holy Modal Rounders\, and briefly with the Fugs. He was the leader of several musical projects including The Bottlecaps and the WORM All-Stars and has performed with They Might be Giants\, The Roches\, and Loudon Wainwright III\, among others. \nThe Fugs with Ed Sanders: Highly influential and always anarchic\, The Fugs were founded in 1965 and quickly became a countercultural phenomenon known for combining classical poetry with outrageous\, political\, raunchy\, and often downright hilarious lyrics. Ed Sanders\, the co-founder with Tuli Kupferberg\, is a poet\, scholar\, social activist\, and publisher of The Woodstock Journal. Also in the band is Steven Taylor\, noted composer and professor at Naropa University in Boulder\, Colorado\, who performed with Allen Ginsberg for many years. Famous Fugs tunes include: “Slum Goddess From the Lower East Side\,” “We Don’t Allow No Robots in Sunday School\,” “Refuse to Be Burnt-Out\,” and Tuli’s ever-popular “Nothing.” Coby Batty and Scott Petito shall also rock out. \nThe Last Poets Umar Bin Hassan\, Abiodun Oyewole\, Babatunde: Coming out of the Civil Rights movement in the late 60s\, The Last Poets were one of the earliest purveyors of politically-charged\, urgent poetry—the precursors of hip hop. Their fiery spoken word and taut rhythms are credited with influencing and paving the way for the emergence of Rap and Hip Hop music. Speaking out about racism\, poverty and other concerns\, their work is as relevant and inspirational today as it was when they began.

Morgan leads a reading from this new work and a discussion with Andy Clausen\, Eliot Katz\, Bob Rosenthal\, and Peter Hale about Ginsberg\, his poetry and politics. \n4 PM: A Publication Party and Reading by John Tytell\nIn celebration of Tytell’s books The Beat Interviews published by Beatdom Books and Writing Beat and Other Occasions of Literary Mayhem\, published by Vanderbilt University Press. \n5 PM: Kerouac In The House\nLawrence Smith\, long time friend and occasional photographer of Jack Kerouac\, gives a presentation on his relationship with the famed author through photographs\, correspondence\, and other remembrances. \n6 PM: And When I Die\, I Won’t Stay Dead\, a new documentary about Bob Kaufman by Billy Woodbery. w/  Len Chandler & David Henderson In Conversation\nLen Chandler performs and leads a discussion with David Henderson about jazz-inspired Beat poet Bob Kaufman—sometimes called the “American Rimbaud”—and the African-American contribution to the Beats. They will  introduce And When I Die\, I Won’t Stay Dead\, a feature-length documentary about Kaufman by Billy Woodberry. “The doc marks a welcome and overdue comeback for Woodberry some 31 years after his sole drama feature Bless Their Little Hearts\, a neo-realist study of a cash-strapped Watts family\, made considerable impact on limited Stateside release. Along with his sometime collaborator Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep)\, Woodberry was a leading figure in the L.A. Rebellion\, the loose collective of black filmmakers who emerged from the UCLA Film School in the mid-1970s and foregrounded social and political issues in their work.” — Neil Young\, Hollywood Reporter \n8 PM: The Films of Taylor Mead\nTaylor Mead\, the Poet laureate of Warhol’s Factory\, the world’s first Underground Movie Star\, and the Lower East Side’s own poet maudit\, is remembered with a rare showing of The Flower Thief as well as The Party In Taylor Mead’s Kitchen and other Mead films.

The evening ends with a Super Bowery Slam\, featuring old and new slam poets from the Bowery\, the Nuyorican and the other Slam poetry series around the city\, culminating with the unveiling of Bowery Poetry’s Slam Team that will be heading to the national competition this summer. Expect to hear The Last Poets\, The Next-to-the-Last Poets\, and The Next Poets as well as Beats\, Umbras\, Deep Imagists and maybe even some Sound\, Language\, and New Formalists. A Wide Open Scene. \n3 PM: el Plumo Emplumado: a talk by Margaret Randall\nFrom January\, 1962 through July\, 1969\, El Corno Emplumado / The Plumed Horn was on the cutting edge of independent publishing. The bilingual quarterly\, which ran from 100 to almost 300 pages per issue\, published some of the best new work to come out of Latin and North America—with occasional sections from Canada\, Finland\, France\, and other countries. Its 3\,000 copies were distributed worldwide. The journal was founded and co-edited by Margaret Randall and Sergio Mondragon. In its last year Robert Cohen replaced Mondragon on the masthead. Because it took a stand in defense of Mexico’s 1968 Student Movement\, in mid-1969 the journal was forced to close. He’s shot cover art for albums by Steve Earle\, Amy Rigby\, and Laura Cantrell. In 2011 he collaborated with writer Drew Hubner on the book East of Bowery. He has written about music and edited the website Boogie Woogie Flu\, and he is a DJ at WFMU. \nMike DeCapite’s published work includes the novel Through the Windshield\, the chapbooks Sitting Pretty and Creamsicle Blue\, and the short-prose collection Radiant Fog. His work has found many other outlets\, including the magazines 3:AM\, CUZ\, Evergreen Review\, and Vanitas\, and numerous public readings. \nVincent Katz is a poet\, translator\, critic\, and curator. He is the author of 12 books of poems\, including Swimming Home (Nightboat Books\, 2015) and Southness (Lunar Chandelier Press\, 2016). He collaborated with photographer Rudy Burckhardt on two books about New York City\, and curated several Burckhardt exhibitions\, including Street Dance: The New York Photographs of Rudy Burckhardt\, for the Museum of the City of New York. He teaches at the Yale School of Art and lives in New York City\, where he curates the Readings in Contemporary Poetry series at Dia: Chelsea. \nLuc Sante’s books include Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York\, The Factory of Facts\, Kill All Your Darlings: Pieces 1990–2005\, and The Other Paris. Happening is pleased to present Play What You Like: Fluxus\, Music & More curated by Jade Dellinger\, opening Saturday\, June 18th from 6-8 PM and running through July 31st. Drawing its title from an early work by the Italian Fluxus artist/composer Giuseppe Chiari\, Play What You Like: Fluxus Music & More highlights both historical works and the works of those influenced by those historical precedents. \nMost heavily inspired by the ideas of John Cage\, Fluxus art often relied on chance to shape the outcome and actively involved the viewer. Fluxus compositions or scores for performances and events involved simple actions\, ideas\, and objects from everyday life. Incorporating concrete poetry\, visual art and writing\, Fluxus performances were the embodiment of Dick Higgins’ idea of “intermedia”—a dialogue between two or more media to create a third\, entirely new art form. \nYet\, as many of the Fluxus artists had formal training in music\, musical composition and performance (frequently involving the alteration\, misuse or abuse of traditional instruments) became central to their activity. Beginning with a series of festivals featuring concerts of experimental music and other avant-garde performance\, Fluxus artists reacted against the commodification of art\, its commercialization in the gallery system\, and its static presentation in museums. A primary goal of most Fluxus artists was to destroy any boundary between art and life. Founder George Maciunas stated that Fluxus was “anti-art\,” to underscore the revolutionary mode of thinking about the practice and process of art while using humor to mock the elitist world of “high art” and to bring art to the widest possible audience. \nIn addition to the artists listed above\, of particular note will be the interactive installation JOHN CAGE 33 1/3 performed by Howl! gallery-goers. Conceived in 1969 as an “audience participation” work\, John Cage’s original “score” simply stipulated that the gallery be filled with about a dozen record players and two- to three-hundred vinyl records. Visitors to the gallery are encouraged to act as DJs and create a musical mix by playing records freely and thus performing the work. \nAccording to guest curator Jade Dellinger\, “when the work was first installed at the University of California in Davis\, a local record store graciously volunteered the hundreds of necessary records. However\, as Cage never discussed condition or specified titles\, the store promptly sent over the most common and undesirable\, damaged and utterly unsalable records in their inventory.” Dellinger was inspired by a line from a letter he received in the 80s from Cage in which the composer noted that “I am not interested in the names of movements but rather in seeing and making things not seen before.” \nA prominent group of visual artists and performers (even a few Rock & Roll Hall of Famers) have submitted top ten picks or album playlists to fill record bins. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 20th / 5 PM / FREE\nWE HAVE CHANGED OUR PROGRAM\nTom Murrin\, AKA The Alien Comic\, brought joy and love with him wherever he went and it’s particularly fitting that this Full Moon Show also falls on the Summer Solstice—a time to focus on the positive\, on the doors that are opening\, on tolerance and on the potential to connect creatively and authentically with one another. \nThis afternoon\, we will bequeath to Tom the names of the 49 souls lost. It will be a real full moon send-off for our brothers and sisters in Orlando as we ask Tom to shepherd them in and fill them with light. \nChris Tanner is a long time friend and admirer of the “fabulous Tom Murrin.”  Tanner is a visual and performance artist living and working in the east village since 1979. He worked extensively at La MaMa and in his own productions including Ravaged by Romance\, Up\, Up and more Up\, Jack of Tarts\, and One must do what one Must do. He has performed throughout the country in Make Love\, Karen Finley’s cabaret show\, and with other collaborators including Penny Arcade\, the Bloolips\, Maria Irene Fornes\, Sebastian Stuart\, Cyndi Lauper\, Everett Quinton\, David Lynch\, and Julie Atlas Muz. Tanner’s work will be featured in an exhibition opening August 12th at AMP gallery in Provincetown.\nLuna Macaroona is coordinated by curator/performer Salley May. \nWe are weeping. \n\nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show\nPerformance is anything done with purpose and style—Tom Murrin \nHowl! Happening houses the archive of Tom Murrin that comprises masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed his Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. When he didn’t have a club date\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street.

Happening is pleased to host a publication party and slide show for History Is Made at Night\, a book of fine art photography from David Godlis\, including 119 of his iconic black and white images. Representing 40 years of work by the artist\, the book features images of the nighttime world of CBGB and life on the street between 1976 and 1979. In the style of Brassaï and Robert Frank\, Godlis uses a hand held Leica and TRI-X film to capture the outsider essence of his subjects in the gritty heyday of the New York City Punk scene. Pictured under the Bowery street lights in their glory days are The Ramones\, Blondie\, Richard Hell\, Patti Smith\, Television\, Talking Heads\, and Suicide\, among others. \nWith an Introduction by noted film director Jim Jarmusch\, this 168 page duotone monograph is published and distributed by Matte Editions. Available in June 2016. \nDavid Godlis is a photographer and artist who captured iconic images of the original punk rock era. Starting as a street photographer inspired by mid-20th century figures like Diane Arbus\, Robert Frank and Weegee\, he was particularly influenced by Brassaï’s\nParis by Night (1933)—taking photographs at night using only natural light. This technique distinguishes his work and focus on the now-historic photographs he took of 70s punk bands at CBGB\, including The Ramones\, Television\, Blondie\, Richard Hell\, and Patti Smith. \n

Happening’s monthly series of performances\, rituals\, and blessings\, features original members of the Full-Moon Crew and other leading contemporary performers. For July\, performer/curator Salley May and her sister\, artist Nancy May Perry\, create Mayhem in the gallery and pay tribute to the moon goddess Luna Macaroona and to Tom Murrin—an artist whose legacy continues today with the young performance artists he encouraged and inspired. \nMayhem is Salley May and Nancy May Perry\, who combine shared and separate histories to chart lines between danger/safety\, prey/predator\, and inside/outside\, summoning unconventional forces for protection and power\, and identifying survival as a radical act. Mayhem was formed when these two sisters came together for a performance at the New Museum in 2013. \nSalley May is Howl! Happening’s Tom Murrin Full Moon series curator\, a NYC-based performance artist since 1986. She has curated PS122’s Avant-Garde-Arama series since 1988\, and has run theater/dance workshops with mentally ill populations through HAI (Hospital Audiences\, Inc.) since 1990. She was a longtime member of Jennifer Miller’s Circus Amok! and is devoted to the life\, work and spirit of Tom Murrin aka the Alien Comic. \nVisual artist Nancy May Perry explores images of transparency and houses concepts of safety and danger in the mundane of day-to-day experience. She did undergraduate work at the University of California\, Berkeley and received an MFA from Hunter College. Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939–March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit Cock-Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nWith the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGB\, Max’s Kansas City and Irving Plaza. He performed in New York City clubs and theaters as The Alien Comic\, appearing in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, PS122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at PS122\, and later at the La Mama Experimental Theater Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. Curator Jade Dellinger\, director of the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery\, will host the discussion about John Cage\, Fluxus\, music and more. Dellinger will be joined by George Maciunas historian\, Colby Chamberlain\, and the always poignant and witty Anthony Haden-Guest. \nThe event will feature a rare multimedia performance by Howl! Happening’s director Ted Riederer. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 12\, 2016 / 7 PM /\n$30 Suggested Donation\nWith Alice Moy\, Cornelius Loy\, and Music by Samoa \nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival \nKembra Pfahler is a punk rocker\, screen goddess\, curator and performance artist who moved from Los Angeles to the East Village in the early 1980s. Over the course of her time in New York\, she’s modeled for Calvin Klein\, sung lead in theatrical death metal band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black\, and created performances based on Anti-Naturalism and Availabilism\, the tenet of which is making the best of what’s available to create performances—as an expression of an ineffable part of oneself. \nRebel Without a Cock is an epic-length Karen Black song from the album “Fuck Island.” This work uses classic rock like the bread and the performance art aspect like the butter. “It makes the sharing of this work a little happier and less austere\,” says Kembra as she describes the album as “having the worst titles she has ever come up with” and looks forward to putting them all onto t-shirts. She feels that a show is only as good as the t-shirt and says she would “prefer to wear a Rebel Without a Cock t-shirt to an Annie or Chicago t-shirt. When pressed to further explain the content of this performance she recommended “it would be better to know as little as possible about the performance so as to be more surprised.” Participating in the performance are Samoa\, co- founder and lead guitarist of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen black and band member Alice Moy. An artist\, Samoa will be having his first solo painting show at Howl! Happening in January 2018. \nPfahler’s work has been included in solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects\, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center\, and The Hole\, New York\, NY; Rove Gallery\, London\, UK; and hpgrp Gallery\, Tokyo\, Japan. She was a featured artist in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. She will have a solo exhibition at the Leopold Thun gallery in London opening November 2016. She has toured and performed extensively with The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black throughout the world and her extensive body of film work is housed in the Fales library at New York University. In 2014 she developed “Performance Art 101\,” a curriculum that she has taught at prestigious educational institutions like CalArts and elsewhere. Pfahler’s work has been discussed in The New York Times\, W\, and Rolling Stone\, among other publications. \nTICKETS: $30 suggested donation.
