SUMMARY:John Pizza in Why's the Room Purple? 'Cause the Moon's Purple
DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon Show: A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention \nJohn Pizza is a performer\, builder\, and drawer. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make his shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative\, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises. \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nPerformance is anything done with purpose and style—Tom Murrin \nHowl! Happening houses the collection of Tom Murrin. Tom\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the “Godfather of Performance Art.” Every full moon—without fail\, paid booking or not\, in all seasons and whatever the weather—he performed his Luna Macaroona Full Moon Show. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron\, and many others. When he didn’t have a club date\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement/Creative Learning\, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature\, and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. LMCC.net

SUMMARY:Tessa Hughes-Freeland: Passed and Present
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, October 17 / 6 PM / Free \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Passed and Present\, an exhibition and installation by Tessa Hughes-Freeland comprising a variety of cinematic elements. Known for her contributions to the Cinema of Transgression movement\, the exhibition includes single-channel and multiple projections\, an interactive kaleidoscope\, sculptural fans\, and a series of special screenings including the premiere of her recently completed Lost Movie/The Bug. \nConfrontational\, transgressive\, provocative\, and poetic\, Hughes-Freeland approaches filmmaking from a multiplicity of styles. Her work includes underground films\, classic narrative\, expanded cinematic performances\, experimental “automatic” films assembled entirely from found footage\, and delicate fans made from film of all gauges.  \nIn live-action films\, as well as collaged films from found footage\, Hughes-Freeland taps into the sophisticated emotional filters we erect to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Images crash into one another in disorienting ways. Drawing upon the mind-altering potential of spontaneous transformation and the power of myth\, her films are essentially “psychedelic”—conjuring ineffable experiences beyond the commonplace. \n“My films are ritualistic and atavistic—inspired by dreams\, visions\, and imagination. Sometimes the nucleus of an idea for a film starts with an object. The original idea for Hireath came from the top of the Christmas cake\, which my mother made every year\,” the artist says. \nHiraeth\, a Welsh concept expressing a deep longing for home\, is based on memory and loss. Drawing loosely on paganism and the mythology of female archetypes as seers\, the film evokes an arc of Hughes-Freeland’s experience as a woman over time.  \nOther Wise\, a large multiple projection\, extends the sentiment of loss present in Hiraeth. Working directly with wide-ranging sources—film made from Letraset\, handmade slides\, and original ethereal imagery—the work includes a poetic secret message to the departed based on imagery from a dream. The naturally transmutable iconography and romantic framework of the piece create a visual poem expressing the metaphysical poles of connection and otherness\, and the beauty of transformation. The projection screen is formally linked to the film fans by its concertina-like shape.  \nIn turn\, the kaleidoscope uses Other Wise to create further fragmentation within a circular form. A primitive cinematic device devoid of technology\, it is fashioned from a camera tripod and case. Interactive and fun\, this piece invites the viewer to see the world and the exhibition in a magical state.  \n“Found footage is the basis of much of my films. Similarly\, a found object can inspire an entire film. I see these as signifiers or emotional triggers that become a part of my own symbolic language. The fans consist of found film in all gauges—home movies; Hollywood studio films; pornographic films; or random footage found in thrift stores\, yard sales\, or just lying on the street\,” Hughes-Freeland explains.  \nAs part of the public programs in conjunction with the show\, Howl! will screen a selection of Hughes-Freeland’s films including Baby Doll (1981)\, a docu-portrait of go-go dancers\, and Nymphomania (1994)\, a brutal and a comedic critique of the dialectic of male/female sexuality.  \n  \nABOUT TESSA HUGHES-FREELAND \nTessa Hughes-Freeland has been making films since the 1980s and is considered a member of the Cinema of Transgression movement. Her films have been screened internationally in museums\, galleries\, and seedy bars\, including MoMA\, MOCA\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, New Museum\, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art. Currently\, five of her films are featured in an exhibition touring museums throughout Asia\, including Seoul\, South Korea. She has been a juror for numerous festivals and programmed extensively\, most recently for the Club 57: Film\, Performance\, and Art in the East Village\, 1978-1983 exhibition at MoMA\, and for Punk Lust: Raw Provocation 1971-85 at the Museum of Sex.  Hughes-Freeland was president of the board of directors of the New York-based Film–Makers‘ Cooperative for several years. \nImage: Mirror Mirror: Daylight Cinema\, 2017\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland.

SUMMARY:98 Bowery\, 1969-89: View from the Top Floor
DESCRIPTION:Marc H Miller Website Relaunch and Talk \nArtist and curator Marc H Miller talks about his life in downtown New York City and unveils an updated version of his website 98 Bowery\, 1969-89\, a picture memoir of the 20 years he lived in a Bowery loft observing and participating in the genre-changing transformations taking place in art and music. Miller’s presentation at Howl! Happening marks the recent revamping of the 98 Bowery website\, first launched 10 years ago. \nDrawing from the site’s archive of photos and video clips\, Miller recounts stories about Harry’s Bar and CBGB; the seminal 1978 Punk Art show; collaborative work with Bettie Ringma\, Curt Hoppe\, Alan Moore\, and Paul Tschinkel—all residents at 98 Bowery; his year in Amsterdam; and the varied roles he played in the East Village art scene and in the rise of hip-hop culture in the 1980s. The 98 Bowery website has been visited by more than 600\,000 people. \nMiller is well known as the curator of the Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk exhibition at the Queens Museum (2016)\, and for his video interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat in Paul Tschinkel’s Art/new york series. His online store Gallery 98 has reanimated vintage art ephemera. \nMiller is a scholar (Ph.D.\, Institute of Fine Arts\, NYC) and a counterculture provocateur (his interactive art series Draw a Penis and Vagina is 98 Bowery’s most popular page). Underlying it all is his understanding of the roots of contemporary culture in the 1970s and 80s\, and the direct link between the interactive strategies that emerged in art then and the current world of selfies and reality television. \nAbout Marc H Miller\nMarc H Miller arrived in New York from California in 1968 to pursue a Ph.D. in art history at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts (1979). Miller is an artist\, curator\, writer\, publisher\, and educator. His multifaceted career is unified by an interest in pictorial images and their inherent ability to tell stories. \nFrom 1981-85\, he worked with Paul Tschinkel on ART/new york\, an educational videotape series. He was a columnist for the East Village Eye (1983-85)\, and the co-editor of ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery (1985). In 2001 he founded Ephemera Press\, which published illustrated maps and walking tour guides\, including one of the East Village. \nMiller was a curator at the Queens Museum from 1985 to 1991\, and returned as guest curator for Hey Ho Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk (2016). As an artist in collaboration with Bettie Ringma and Curt Hoppe\, he has exhibited at OK Harris Gallery (1974)\, Art Basel (1980)\, the New Museum (2011)\, and Stigter Van Doesberg Gallery in Amsterdam (2018). Miller is the creator of the website 98 Bowery (2009) and its related online store Gallery 98 (2015). He is on the board of advisors for Howl! Happening. \n“Curator Marc H Miller: Pulling the Punk Pieces Together\,” Please Kill Me\, 9/25/19

SUMMARY:Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york No. 72: CURT HOPPE Downtown Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Screening and Panel Discussion \nThis edition of ART/new york showcases Curt Hoppe and explores his work as photographer\, realist painter\, and “Charles Bukowski of the downtown art world”—penetrating layers of cultural history to reveal the changing faces of the neighborhood. Both the filmmaker and the artist have longtime connections based on their residence at 98 Bowery\, where Hoppe has lived for 43 years. \nA panel discussion follows with painter Jane Dickson\, filmmaker Charlie Ahearn\, and sculptor John Ahearn—all of whom have been subjects for Curt’s paintings and photographs. Hoppe was recently the subject of double exhibitions at Howl! Happening and Frank Bernarducci Gallery. In this program\, we see the opening at the Bernarducci Gallery and interviews conducted by artist Brett De Palma\, as well as lengthy conversations with Hoppe and De Palma in their studios. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york series\, begun in 1979. \nHoppe\, a realist painter and photographer\, has enjoyed a successful 40-year career driven by meaningful relationships with pioneering downtown creators. Hoppe pays tribute to the core group of artists who offered him friendship and direction when he first arrived in the city in the mid 70s\, and who continue to inspire and define him today both as artist and member of a vibrant and enduring creative community. \nView the Trailer \nPaul Tschinkel is the producer and director of the ART/new york video series. A painter and video artist\, he is a graduate of the M.F.A. program at Yale University. His work has been shown widely in Europe\, Japan\, and the U.S.\, at prominent institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, MoMA\, and the National Gallery of Art. Over the years\, Tschinkel’s unique work has become a valuable historical resource on contemporary art and artists. Begun in 1979\, the ART/new york series has covered artists such as Alice Neel\, Chuck Close\, Jeff Koons\, and many more. Tschinkel also produced and recorded many of the punk and new wave bands of the late 70s\, and 80s. \nAbout Curt Hoppe

SUMMARY:Celebrating Bob Kaufman
DESCRIPTION:Raymond Foye Hosts an Evening of Poetry\, Film\, and Music \nBob Kaufman’s life is written on mirrors in smoke. —Jack Kerouac \nSo much did he embody a French tradition of the poet as outsider\, madman\, and outcast\, that in France\, Kaufman was called the Black Rimbaud. —David Henderson\, poet \nHowl! Edited by Neeli Cherkovski\, Raymond Foye\, and Tate Swindell\, the anthology was published by City Lights Books in 2019. \nBIOGRAPHIES \nFeatured reader David Henderson is a poet and writer who co-founded the Black Arts Movement in New York in the early 60s. He co-published Umbra magazine\, an important literary journal of the 60s\, which featured Bob Kaufman. He has published numerous books of poetry and has taught at schools and universities throughout the United States\, including the University of California\, Berkeley. His biography of Jimi Hendrix\, ‘Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky\, is in its third edition\, and his collaborations with Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra have recently been re-released in deluxe packages from Columbia Legacy\, and Evidence. \nDavid Henderson will be accompanied by bassist and composer William Parker\, and trumpet\, flute\, and reeds virtuoso Daniel Carter. William Parker has been the organizer and guiding light behind New York’s Vision Festival\, which he founded in 1996. He has over 50 releases and has appeared as sideman and collaborator with Cecil Taylor\, Charles Gayle\, John Zorn\, and many others. He is also an author and publisher. Daniel Carter has been a vital member of the free-jazz scene in New York since the 70s. SUMMARY:Antony Zito: My Father Was a Satyr
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, November 22 6–8 PM \nZito is one of my very favorite New York artists\, partly because he thinks of himself as an artisan and partly because he’s a fine and inventive painter. —Jim Jarmusch \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present Antony Zito’s My Father Was a Satyr. Fascinated by the detritus of everyday life left on the curbs of his East Village neighborhood\, Zito collects discarded objects to use as the basis for his paintings. Through the artist’s hand\, these artifacts’ stories—steeped in narratives all their own—merge with portraits of Zito’s peers\, adhering the inherent emotional energy of the intuitively rendered portraits to layers of the city’s history. \nIn the lineage of modern artists who worked across mediums and used unconventional materials and found objects\, with My Father Was a Satyr\, Zito creates his biggest installation to date—a towering construction layered with portraits\, metal sculpture\, and scavenged eye candy\, to form a whimsical ziggurat. \nMade up of large-scale welded metal sculpture flanked by sprawling\, multi-panel figurative paintings\, all of the materials are scavenged from street corners\, dump sites\, and scrap yards\, continuing his career-long tradition of painting portraits on found objects. The sculptures are built with an array of rusted and painted elements\, deftly combined to animate the form and feeling of a living entity—just as his portraits combine collage and paint with found materials\, turning recycled ingredients into renderings of living\, breathing people. \n \n“New York is a city of faces\,” says Zito\, “and I am obsessed with them. Whether it’s the local bodega owner\, the billboard model\, the lost soul on the corner\, or the people I most enjoy spending time with\, I dive into faces\, searching for their narrative\, for some message or meaning. I gather these faces in my imagination\, mixing them with memories and experiences I’ve absorbed in the course of my life in New York.” \nAntony Zito is a portrait painter and collector of objects\, who moved to the Lower East Side from New England in 1992. Zito has spent more than 20 years on New York’s Lower East Side\, where he ran a gallery and portrait studio on Ludlow Street through 2006. His portraits of the local characters illustrate a sweeping line through the 90s and 2000s in the East Village rock and art scenes. The New York Post has called his paintings “sensual\,” and his renderings of people on recycled materials prompted The Village Voice to refer to him as “a master of the found object.” \nHis work has been exhibited and collected in the U.S.\, UK\, Italy\, France\, Spain\, Belgium\, Mexico\, and Japan. Several of Zito’s portraits and other artworks appear in the Jim Jarmusch films Coffee and Cigarettes and Broken Flowers. Zito recently completed a two-story mural in the East Village\, and is currently working on a documentary film about the Mars Bar\, illuminating his corner of the East Village and Lower East Side in the 90s and early aughts. \n

SUMMARY:Bob Holman Publication Party: 'Life Poem' and 'The Unspoken'
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is pleased to celebrate our friend\, Howl! board member\, and poet extraordinaire Bob Holman on the occasion of the publication of two new poetry books. Written 50 years apart\, Bowery Books will simultaneously release Life Poem and The Unspoken. The books serve not only as bookends to a lifetime immersed in words\, performance\, and the avant-garde\, but they also show the evolution of an artist\, an art form\, and a downtown art scene that’s gone from Allen Ginsberg to Lou Reed to Eileen Myles to Mahogany L. Browne. \nIn a New Yorker profile\, Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote that Bob Holman has “done more to bring poetry to cafes and bars than anyone since Ferlinghetti.” Holman brought the spoken-word scene and poetry slams to New York City\, first as the co-director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe\, then as the founder of the Bowery Poetry Club. He further democratized poetry through the award-winning PBS documentaries The United States of Poetry and Language Matters\, which he produced and hosted. And then there are his 17 published works and thousands of rollicking live performances. Quite a ride for\, as Holman calls himself\, the son of the only Jew in Harlan\, Kentucky. \nLife Poem is a recently rediscovered book-length poem Holman wrote at age 21\, new to poetry and first in its thrall. Filled with “jounce and pounce\,” as Gwendolyn Brooks says\, it’s a hippie diary full of communes\, Vietnam\, romance\, and a driving love for language that ended up lasting a lifetime. The Unspoken is a collection of recent works\, written by Holman\, a widower in his 70s\, still devoted to poetry\, but now with decades of experience\, memories\, and loss to inform it. There are poems of all sorts: personal\, confessional\, poems set to music\, poems that are meant to be shouted or whispered. There are poems addressed to his late wife\, the painter Elizabeth Murray; to their children; and to the countless artists and poets he’s encountered over the last half century. \nThe books show the roots of Holman’s own personal mix of Appalachian storytelling\, spoken-word poetry bravado\, and New York whimsy and humor. Both poems are a raucous celebration of a life lived as art\, and an invitation to the reader to join the party. In the words of poet Naomi Shihab Nye\, “His life gusto and poetry voice keep the world turning.” \nCrowned “Ringmaster of the Spoken Word” by the New York Daily News\, Bob Holman has performed his poems with a punk band in Kiev\, a griot in Timbuktu\, a ballet company in San Francisco. As the original Slam Master of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe; creator of the world’s first spoken-word record label\, Mouth Almighty/Mercury; and founder of the Bowery Poetry Club; Holman has played a central role in the spoken-word and slam-poetry movements of the last several decades. He is the author of 17 poetry collections; A Couple of Ways of Doing Something (Aperture\, a collaboration with Chuck Close); and has taught at Princeton\, Columbia\, NYU\, Bard\, and The New School. A co-founder of the Endangered Language Alliance\, Holman’s study of hip-hop and West African oral traditions led to his current work with endangered languages. \nTwitter: @BobHolmanPoet \nInstagram: @BobHolman

SUMMARY:Full Moon Show with John Pizza: DEAD COWS
DESCRIPTION:“Its morning. I’m looking in the mirror. I see no fangs\, no fur\, I hear no howling. So why is my shower curtain so bloody? And why are there piles of freshly butchered steaks in my refrigerator?” \nJoin artist/performer John Pizza for The Full Moon Show: DEAD COWS\, a performance at Howl! Happening. Come gather — rain or shine\, happy or sad\, up or down — on the sidewalk outside the gallery at 4 PM sharp. \nWhen a young computer programmer falls asleep in front of his TV after work one night\, the line between horror movies and real-life blurs. One transformation can only lead to another and what begins as an innocent midnight snack ends with a domino effect of bloodied lives. Using found objects and homemade puppets\, a lycanthropic adventure tale unfolds in a small rural town\, where no one is safe\, especially the cows. \nJohn Pizza is a performer\, builder\, and drawer. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make his shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative\, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises. \nwww.johnpizza.net \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron\, and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid-80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986.

SUMMARY:Roberta Bayley: She Just Takes Pictures
DESCRIPTION:A film by Beth Lasch \nHowl! is pleased to present the world premiere of Beth Lasch’s Roberta Bayley: She Just Takes Pictures. \nThe documentary showcases Bayley’s punk-era photography from 1975 to 1986. Among the artists Bayley has photographed are Iggy Pop\, the Ramones\, Debbie Harry and Blondie\, Richard Hell\, Elvis Costello\, the Sex Pistols\, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers\, Ian Dury\, Brian Eno\, Nick Lowe\, The Damned\, The Clash\, the Dead Boys\, X-Ray Spex\, Squeeze\, and a reunited New York Dolls. \nThe film includes candid interviews with the photographer and a peek into her longtime St. Marks Place apartment. Included are all of Roberta’s iconic photos—behind-the-scenes images\, classic live shots\, and intimate portraits\, plus many others rarely seen. The 33-minute film was created for Lasch’s television show F#TV and will be followed by a Q&A with Bayley and the director. \nArriving in New York in the spring of 1974\, Bayley soon began working the door at CBGBs—New York’s legendary punk club—photographing the musicians who played there. She soon went to work for Punk Magazine and is one of the main photographers to visually chronicle the early punk-rock scene. \nBayley’s photographs are featured in countless books and magazines on punk. She has exhibited in New York\, Los Angeles\, Buenos Aires\, Berlin\, Sydney\, Paris\, Austin\, Portland\, Amsterdam\, Tokyo\, Hong Kong\, London\, Mexico City\, and Pittsburgh. She co-wrote Patti Smith: An Unauthorized Biography (Simon & Schuster\, 1999) and published Blondie: Unseen 1976-1980 (Plexus\, 2006)\, her take on the seminal new-wave band. She appeared on-screen as a hooker in the gritty independent feature film Downtown 81 which starred Jean-Michel Basquiat and chronicled New York’s downtown 80s art scene. \nImage: Richard Hell by Roberta Bayley

SUMMARY:Antony Zito: Catalog Launch and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Catalog Launch and Panel Discussion \nHowl! Happening presents a lively discussion with writers\, artists\, and luminaries Penny Arcade\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, Clayton Patterson\, and Marguerite Van Cook about Zito’s work and the themes present in his exhibition My Father was a Satyr. \n“Art worlds were often rooted in a distinctive milieu\, and artworks generated in Montmartre pre-World War I\, say\, or London’s Chelsea post-World War II\, are more likely to clue you in to the time and place of their making than the art produced nowadays\, which has become a global industry. Antony Zito’s art does just that—though the Where and the When are the Lower East Side\, not yet gentrified into the East Village. True\, that was the LES of not so long ago\, but being pulled back into what was until recently richly alive can trigger emotions at least as intense as more history-sheathed art. As here.” – Antony Haden Guest \nMade up of large-scale welded metal sculpture flanked by sprawling\, multi-panel figurative paintings\, all of the materials are scavenged from street corners\, dump sites\, and scrap yards\, continuing his career-long tradition of painting portraits on found objects. The sculptures are built with an array of rusted and painted elements\, deftly combined to animate the form and feeling of a living entity—just as his portraits combine collage and paint with found materials\, turning recycled ingredients into renderings of living\, breathing people. \nThe catalog for My Father was a Satyr includes essays by Oriah Abera\, Penny Arcade\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, Jim Jarmusch and will be on sale at the event. \nPenny Arcade Aka Susana Ventura is an internationally respected performance artist\, writer\, poet and experimental theatre-maker known for her magnetic stage presence\, her take no prisoners wit and her content-rich plays and one-liners. She is the author of ten scripted performance plays and hundreds of performance art pieces. \nMarguerite Van Cook is an English artist\, writer\, musician/singer\, and filmmaker. She was born in England and now resides in New York City in the Lower East Side/East Village. \nAnthony Haden-Guest is a British-American writer\, reporter\, cartoonist\, art critic\, poet\, and socialite who lives in New York City and London. He is a frequent contributor to major magazines and has had several books published \nClayton Patterson is a Canadian-born artist\, photographer\, videographer and folk historian. Since moving to New York City in 1979\, his work has focused almost exclusively on documenting the art\, life and times of the Lower East Side in Manhattan \nAntony Zito’s My Father was a Satyr will be on view until December 22nd.

SUMMARY:Jane Dickson: HOT\, HOT\, HOT
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, January 9th / 6-8 PM \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Jane Dickson’s Hot\, Hot\, Hot\, a series of rarely seen and moody paintings of Times Square peep shows from the 1980s. Dickson’s history and legacy are rooted in Times Square. She worked and lived there from 1978 to 2008 documenting her daily lived experiences and observations as a young woman. In photos\, drawings\, and paintings that utilize unconventional industrial and domestic materials as surfaces—including carpet\, sandpaper\, and black plastic bags—she captured a time and place that was notoriously lawless\, squalid\, and vibrantly alive. \n \nIn her essay for the exhibition catalog\, art historian Deborah Frizzell places Dickson as a critical witness and commentator on the effects of mass media on “perception and desire”: \nRooted in the street as a site for public intervention\, as a place to seek out alternative stories and ways of being\, Dickson works with the existing repertory of cultural imagery and reveals the slippage or difference prompted in the interplay of power and illusion in contemporary America\, particularly from a feminist perspective that has been ignored and erased from view. Rather than a smoothly polished verisimilitude or a crafted collage of fragments\, Dickson’s rough-cut method often disorients\, jars our senses\, and doubles the vertigo induced by obliquely angled perspectives or alternatively\, flattened peepholes and cubicles. \nWhile the specifics of live peep shows flaunting the broad spectrum of unenhanced bodies accepted in a pre-cosmetic-surgery era are now exotic\, and the live peeps are a historic artifact of the pre-internet universe\, the underlying dynamics of power and vulnerability and the stark divide between who works and who pays remain as relevant as ever. \nThe exhibition follows the success of the Anthology Press monograph Jane Dickson in Times Square\, published in 2019; the exhibition All That Is Solid Melts into Air at James Fuentes Gallery; and the Whitney Museum’s purchase of Dobbs Hats\, one of her key early Times Square paintings. To further contextualize her work\, the exhibition includes a fully illustrated catalog with essays by Sara Rosen\, Deborah Frizzell\, Carlo McCormick\, and David Kiehl. \n \nA part of the politically charged 80s scene of artists working at the intersection of street art\, hip hop\, film\, and installation—like David Wojnarowicz\, Keith Haring\, Jenny Holzer\, and her filmmaker husband Charlie Ahearn—Dickson was a member of the influential artist collectives Colab (Collaborative Projects) and Fashion Moda in the South Bronx. She was one of the organizers of the now legendary Times Square Show\, for which she created the poster with Charlie Ahearn and a and digital animation that ran hourly on the Spectacolor sign at 1 Times Square\, the first computerized lightboard in New York. This groundbreaking digital installation led Dickson to initiate the Messages to the Public series in 1981 with the Public Art Fund\, presenting a series of animated artworks on the billboards of Times Square and bringing first public attention to her friends Keith Haring\, Jenny Holzer\, David Hammons\, and Crash among others. \nIn 1980 Dickson created City Maze\, an installation designed for school children at Fashion Moda\, the art space in the South Bronx founded by Stefan Eins\, which became a platform for the burgeoning hip-hop and graffiti movements. https://youtu.be/OmN4f2_Lmvc \nBeyond Times Square\, Dickson’s focus has encompassed other facets of the contemporary architecture of distraction: demolition derbies\, carnivals\, casinos\, strip malls\, and highways\, utilizing industrial materials such as AstroTurf\, sandpaper\, vinyl\, and felt\, for both their tactile qualities and their associations. \nIn 2008 Dickson created a beloved series of 68 life-size mosaic figures of New Year’s Eve revelers installed in the Times Square subway station. Dickson’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally\, and is included in the collections of more than 30 museums including The Whitney Museum of American Art\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art. In 2016\, The National Portrait Gallery–Smithsonian Institution acquired her portrait of Fab 5 Freddy from 1983\, where it is currently on display. In 2018\, the Whitney acquired Dobb’s Hats (1981)\, a historically essential example of the female gaze in New York City—the city at night and the sex trade. \nImages(top to bottom) \nJane Dickson\, “Live Girls 2” 2001\, Oil stick on Emory Cloth\, 18 x 18 in. \nJane Dickson\, “Chippendales”\, 1993\, Oil and rol-a-tex on canvas\, 69 x 123 in \nJane Dickson\, “Peep Couple”\, 1994\, Oil stick on emory cloth on wood\, 8 x 8 in

SUMMARY:John Pizza in My Shell
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 10\, 2020 / 4 PM / Free \nThe Full Moon Show: A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention \nAll silver and shiny and metallic\, the full moon reflecting on my armor last night was a scrutinizing eye. I prefer to be seen as mirror of your expectations\, a special version of me magnified and reversed\, crisp\, confident and…well-shelled. I suspect you understand. You showed up to the party\, elegantly dressed\, all shelled up\, laughing loudly. We bumped shells all night like little croquet balls. It was colorful! It was fine! How’s your aunt by the way? How was that trip to\, um\, Panama was it? —John Pizza \nHowl! Happening welcomes the New Year with the latest edition of the signature Full Moon Show\, a manic\, mysterious blend of mayhem and madness in the spirit of Tom Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic. Please join artist and performer John Pizza for this latest iteration titled My Shell\, which is all about the shining armored shells we sport when clanking our way through everyday life. As always\, there’s gonna be a little dancing\, a little singing\, and a surprising gathering of absurd objects. \nJohn Pizza is a performer\, builder\, and artist. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative\, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises. \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nPerformance is anything done with purpose and style. —Tom Murrin \nHowl! Happening houses the Collection of Tom Murrin\, aka as the Alien Comic\, Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon—without fail\, paid booking or not\, in all seasons and whatever the weather—he performed his Luna Macaroona Full Moon Show. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement/Creative Learning\, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature\, and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. LMCC.net

SUMMARY:Charlie Ahearn: Times Square Videos
DESCRIPTION:Looking through Ahearn’s window\, we enter a subjective view of the street preachers\, lunatic ranters\, sidewalk performers\, drug addicts\, hookers\, thieves\, police\, homeless\, pedestrians…it’s enough to entertain even the most jaded B-movie fan… —Carlo McCormick\, Paper magazine\, June 1991 \nHowl is pleased to host an evening of Times Square videos by Charlie Ahearn reflecting life there with his wife\, painter Jane Dickson\, and their two children\, Joe and Eve. Doin’ Time In Times Square (1991) is a home movie capturing the capital of sleaze in all its glory\, shot from the windows overlooking 8th Ave and 43rd Street. Show World\, the Adonis Theatre\, and Paradise Alley offer backdrops to another drug deal gone bad. Home movies of Christmas\, New Year’s\, and his son Joe’s birthday mark the passage of time. Jane in Peep Land (1993) is Ahearn’s art documentary about Dickson’s lurid paintings that reflect her feelings and the contradictions she experienced witnessing the neon-lit life on the streets. \nAhearn will also premiere a newly finished video\, Times Square Motor Hotel (1986-1992) (2020)\, unearthing fresh images from the video archive that mix personal moments and street observations capturing life in the Deuce and Times Square. \nIn a prophetic statement\, Ahearn told New York magazine in June ’91\, “I wanted to let people see what I saw. In 10 years\, the world that I’m showing in this tape will be gone.” \nAhearn has been involved in hip hop since the late 70s with his Super-8 kung-fu movie The Deadly Art of Survival. With Fred Brathwaite\, he produced and directed the seminal hip-hop film Wild Style\, released worldwide in 1983. Ahearn directed short films such as 5 Grand Masters\, Dirt Style\, and Dancing Industry. His feature-length documentary Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer was released through Oscilloscope Films. Ahearn had a one-person art-exhibition\, Scratch Ecstasy\, at P.P.O.W. and showed silk-screen paintings in the graffiti- and street-art shows Beyond the Streets\, held in L.A. in 2018 and New York in 2019. The artist resides in New York. \n

SUMMARY:Jane Dickson and Scott Dougan Discuss The Deuce and Times Square
DESCRIPTION:7 PM / Free \nJoin Jane Dickson and Scott Dougan\, production designer of the HBO series The Deuce\, for a conversation about what it means to capture the essence of a particularly infamous time and place in the city—and why we find these visions of New York’s gritty and not-so-distant past so alluring today. \nAlthough virtually undetectable today\, Times Square in the 1970s and 80s was the center of the New York sex industry\, synonymous with prostitution and pornography. The hit HBO series The Deuce\, starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal\, has resurrected the neighborhood’s dark corners and bright lights as it recounts the pioneering moments of the city’s burgeoning sex business. Looking back\, artist Jane Dickson was there. Beginning in 1978\, Dickson lived\, worked\, and raised a family on 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue\, documenting her chosen “neighborhood” and its denizens in her drawings\, paintings\, and photography. \nJane Dickson’s exhibition Hot Hot Hot: Paintings of Times Square Peep Shows continues at Howl! Happening through February 23. \nJane Dickson is a painter and photographer who documented Times Square from 1978 onward. Today\, Dickson’s work is represented in more than 30 museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her newest book\, Jane Dickson in Times Square\, was published in October 2018 by Anthology Editions. \nScott Dougan is currently production designer for HBO’s The Deuce. He began his career as a theatrical set designer\, and most recently served as art director for films including Collateral Beauty (2016)\, Allegiant (2016)\, and Bridge of Spies (2015)\, as well as production designer for American Animals (2018) and Monsters and Men (2018). \nAbout The Deuce: \nCreated by George Pelecanos and David Simon (The Wire\, Treme) and starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal\, The Deuce is a semi-fictional drama series that recounts the launch of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York City’s Times Square. Now in its second season\, the series traces the shifting porn business from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate\, culturally accepted enterprise. \n
