SUMMARY:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery FSW
DESCRIPTION:Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective\nBob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW \nNovember 4 – December 17\, 2016 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 4 from 6-8pm \nPanel Discussion with special guests Carlo McCormick\, Anthony Haden-Guest\, and Adam Lehrer on Saturday\, November 5 at 1pm\nFort Myers\, FLORIDA: Florida SouthWestern State College is delighted to announce Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (located on FSW’s Lee County campus). Opening with a public reception on Friday\, November 4th from 6-8pm\, this ambitious survey runs through December 17th and will include guest lectures\, performances and a panel discussion exploring Arturo Vega’s broader impact on popular culture and contextualizing his work as a visual artist. A collaboration with The Arturo Vega Foundation in NYC\, Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective is the late Mexican-born artist’s first solo U.S. museum retrospective and features photography\, collage and a number of iconic canvases from the artist’s Supermarket and Silver Dollar series (begun in the 1970s); his Flags and so-called “word paintings” from Insults and other series produced during the 1980s\, ‘90s and aughts. \n  \nEscaping the repressive violence of an authoritarian regime under Mexico’s “perfect dictatorship” in the late ‘60s\, Arturo Vega made his way to New York City to study English\, philosophy and photography at the New School for Social Research in the early 1970’s. Having discovered Elvis as a child and later co-directing a touring production of The Who’s “Tommy” at the National University in Mexico City\, Vega understood the revolutionary and transformative power of music\, theatre/performance and art. While working on his first painting series of supermarket signs\, he befriended members of The Ramones\, a rock & roll band that would soon play their first show (and would decades later be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame). Designing the Ramones’ ubiquitous logo based on the Great Seal of the United States\, painting backdrops for their stage and creating a lighting scheme loosely adapted from Albert Speer’s Lichtdom to enhance their effect\, Vega created visual imagery that defined the transgressive aesthetic of punk rock by co-opting and questioning symbols of power. \n  \nIn numerous group shows since the 1970’s\, Vega’s work has more recently been the subject of one-person exhibitions at CB’s 313 Gallery/New York City (1992)\, Raleigh Studios/Miami Beach (Curated by Sandra Schulman in 1994)\, Galería OMR/México\, D.F. (2011)\, Casa Redonda\, Chihuahua/Mexico (2012) and at Howl! Happening in NYC in 2015 and 2016. As Vega once said: “Art connects to the eternal – demanding fast changes and a reckless appetite for truth\, justice and a better way of life.” Empire: An Arturo Vega Retrospective at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery will draw parallels and explore interests shared by Arturo Vega and our gallery namesake. For Rauschenberg\, “(Art was) a means to function thoroughly and passionately in a world that has a lot more to it than paint.” \n  \nMore about us: The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery was founded as The Gallery of Fine Art in 1979 on the Lee County campus of Florida SouthWestern State College/FSW (then Edison Community College). On June 4th 2004\, the Gallery of Fine Art was renamed the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery to honor and commemorate our long time association and friendship with the artist. Over more than three decades until his death\, the Gallery worked closely with Rauschenberg to present world premiere exhibitions including multiple installations of the ¼ Mile or Two Furlong Piece. The artist insisted on naming the space the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (versus the “Robert Rauschenberg Gallery”) as it was consistent with the intimate\, informal relationship he maintained with both our local Southwest Florida community and FSW. \n These events are open to the public\, free of charge. \n Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday 11 am – 3 pm \nClosed Sundays and Holidays \n Tel: (239) 489-9313 \nWeb: www.RauschenbergGallery.com \n  \n

Dam!\nIt’s the Beaver Full Moon Show\nSo\, sharpen your teeth\, fell your logs\, slap your tails\, and gather round the babbling concrete brook\, a.k.a. sidewalk\, outside\nHowl! Happening Gallery \nJoin Chief Executive Beaver Hapi Phace\, Chairbeaver of the Gutenberg Institute for the Preservation of Analog Thinking and his lodge of Full Beaver Moon advisors:\nChief Executive Officer of R&D\, Research & Development\, Salley May\, keeper of the Luna Macaroona flame\, Dam! \nunder the aegis of:\nThe eternal Tom Murrin\, The Alien Comic and Full Moon Show founder as they harness and focus the power of the Full Beaver Moon and its beams of industry\, teamwork\, dental health\, and play\, along with that special and distinct Full Beaver Moon energy\, the double entendre. Dam! Dam! Dam! \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nPhoto copyright Eric McNatt 2016

SUMMARY:TOYO TSUCHIYA Invisible Underground
DESCRIPTION:[Tsuchiya’s images] feel like reports of life on another\, hipper planet\, of which little trace would remain were it not for his persistent and attentive recording eye.\n—Holland Cotter\, “Six O’Clock Observed\,” New York Times\, 1999 \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present a survey of the work Toyo Tsuchiya\, including photographs from the 99 nights at No Se No\, a ten foot print of his iconic image of a garden party in full swing amidst the rubble and ruin or a tenement building\, and other series that capture the Lower East Side during its heyday in the 1980s. His photographs embody Toyo’s search for human connection and identity. \nAlso featured will be a large-scale\, life-sized installation depicting workers in Chinatown on their lunch break with the pathos and presence reminiscent of Ed Kienholz\, as well as new\, colorful paintings inspired by 30 years of shooting in New York City. \nTsuchiya is best known for his photographs of NYC’s Lower East Side art scene in the 1980’s and as an originator of the legendary Rivington School. In these highly personalized images of New York’s Lower East Side since 1980\, Tsuchiya documented what was happening around him—the people\, performance art\, and the Lower East Side art scene—and especially the legendary underground movement of the collaborative Rivington School. \nBorn near Mt. Fuji in Japan\, Tsuchiya grew up in Kyushu and Yokohama. After graduating from the Kanagawa Ken Technical High School for Industrial Design he began his career as an artist. Living in Osaka\, Yokohama\, and Tokyo\, he studied and exhibited paintings\, drawings and collage within a small circle of the 1970’s art world in Tokyo. In the late 70’s he turned to photography\, and soon moved to New York City. \nTsuchiya was a creative force behind the No Se No Social Club\, the stage for many art happenings\, including the 99 Nights\, a marathon of free performances and exhibitions. In his photographs\, Tsuchiya captures the style\, energy\, and free-spirited creativity of the time\, and contextualized these happenings in a fine-art lineage. \nTsuchiya photographed the great performers of the era\, including Stelarc\, Jack Smith\, Tehching Hsieh\, Monty Cantsin and Karen Black\, to name a few. He also curated shows with now notable artists like Ai Weiwei. His work has\, as Tsuchiya acknowledges\, “become part of the underground history of the Lower East Side art and life of the 80s. All of my intention and passion of the 80s remains in those images.” \nIconoclastic and against the grain\, Holland Cotter says in his review: His subject wasn’t the professionalized East Village gallery phenomenon but the fringe activity taking place in the working class\, primarily Hispanic neighborhood centered below Houston Street on Rivington Street. There\, art\, music and performance intermingled; graffiti and Neo-Expression held their own after their vogue had passed elsewhere. The atmosphere was squatter-anarchic; artists\, collectively referred to as the Rivington School\, met in clubs and worked in the street. \nIn recent years\, Tsuchiya has turned to collage\, drawing\, sculpture and mixed media and continues to explore new media and outlets for his relentless creativity.

SUMMARY:The Rivington School: 80s New York Underground
DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2016\nIn honor of the exhibition Toyo Tsuchiya Invisible Underground and the publication of Rivington School: 80s New York Underground\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present the launch of a new book celebrating the Rivington School. Iconoclastic and populist\, the Rivington School is an outgrowth of the No Se No social club and gallery founded in 1983 by “Cowboy” Ray Kelly\, a one-time farmer from Texas\, who maintained that “anyone can be an artist\,” that everything is a work of art. The School was also the origin of the Rivington Sculpture Garden\, a guerrilla sculpture space containing the massive\, welded metal junk sculpture that the group has become known for. \nA vortex of creativity\, Rivington School artists devised ways to live\, create art\, and exhibit with very little money and virtually no media attention. As David Dalton says in his essay for Tsuchiya’s catalog\, “It was a scene so underground that it never came up for air.” \nDecember 8\, 2016 / 6 PM\nR.U.O.K. OR WAT?\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground\nPublication Party\nJoin editor Istvan Kantor for an evening celebrating the new tome including a ritual book burning of the first copy by Monty Cantsin accompanied by Angel Eyedealism\, as well as Rivington School contributors\, and Black Dog publisher Duncan McCorquodale from London.\nRivington School: 80s New York Underground documents the work of the Rivington School group of artists that emerged during the turbulent 80s in the heart of the Lower East Side. The RS set an internationally important precedent for contemporary alternative practice. The book explores the underground scene that formed around this group of artists\, named after an abandoned public school building on Rivington Street. Here\, like-minded street artists\, sculptors and performers set about to create works that refuted and challenged an increasingly commercialized art world. \n

DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2016 / 6 PM / Free\nPublication Party Rivington School: 80s New York Underground \nPart of The Rivington School Performance Series \nIn honor of the exhibition Toyo Tsuchiya Invisible Underground and the publication of Rivington School: 80s New York Underground\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present a series of events that look deeply into the art and practice of the Rivington School. Join editor Istvan Kantor for an evening celebrating the new tome\, including a ritual book burning of first copy by Monty Cantsin accompanied by Angel Eyedealism\, as well as Rivington School contributors\, and Black Dog publisher Duncan McCorquodale from London. \n Rivington School: 80s New York Underground documents the work of the Rivington School group of artists that emerged during the turbulent 80s in the heart of the Lower East Side. \nSituated across the road from the school\, the No Se No social club—also run by Rivington School founder “Cowboy” Ray Kelly—acted as a meeting and performance space for many of the artists involved\, such as Kembra Pfahler\, Dragan Ilic\, Arleen Schloss\, Taylor Mead\, Michael Carter\, Jack Waters\, and Phoebe Legere\, and was where the renowned 99 Nights of performance took place in 1983\, documented every night by the photographer Toyo Tsuchiya for exhibition the following day. The School was also the origin of the guerrilla sculpture space the Rivington Sculpture Garden\, which opened in 1985 and was destroyed more than once by city authorities. Its construction/destruction is documented in the Super 8 film Anti-Credo by Monty Cantsin aka Istvan Kantor. Formed in a vacant lot next to the No Se No club\, the evolving collective space was the site of the massive\, welded metal junk sculpture that the group has become known for. \nThe Rivington School gave rise to a number of highly regarded artists\, including E.F.Higgins III\, Ray Kelly\, David Mora Catlett\, Shalom Neuman\, Toyo Tsuchiya\, Istvan Kantor\, Linus Coraggio\, Paolo Buggiani\, Tovey Halek\, Jack Vengrow\, Ken Hiratsuka\, Gloria McLean\, FA-Q (Kevin Wendall)\, Julius Klein\, Geoff “Gizmo” Gilmore\, JIM C\, Angela Idealism and Peter Missing. \nAbout the Rivington School \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Full Moon Show Philly/KONDOR8 Empowerment Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 13 / 2 PM / Free \n THE FULL MOON SHOW \nA Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention \nAs a special tribute to Tom Murrin\, the late godfather of performance art\, Howl! Happening presents its monthly series THE FULL MOON SHOW—performances\, rituals\, and blessings paying tribute to his moon goddess Luna Macaroona—an homage he delivered as a stage and street performer for nearly 50 years. Whether in the gallery or on the street\, expect madcap performances by old friends and rising stars. The Tom Murrin/Full Moon series is curated by performance artist Salley May. Check back here for times and performers. \nIn her own inimitable style\, she sez:\n“i am doin a multidemsional full moon/solstice ritual complete with greek chorus consisting of salley may…..hapi phace and tony stinkmetal….divination…speakin in tonguez….prophecy and fruit sacrifice and more…..with everythang goin on now it it time for us all to become warriorz…this is an empowerment ceremony………….. I am a hag….hereditary intuitive and ritualist…active since politically and artistically since late 60z….u can also call me babycondor or KONDOR8 which is my tag….had scholarship with lindsey kemp…my only formal trainin….underground moviez with da kuchar brothers..todd verow and many otherz….pyramid performer….many showz and ritualz through da yearz…..i used to call what i do neo shaman a gogo now i step out and say it is time to emerge from da shadowz and do da do… my ritualz or my paintingz in motion….my paintz r vehicles of transformation…….” \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels.\nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. He performed in New York City clubs and theaters as The Alien Comic\, appearing in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights he dubbed The Full Moon Show at Performance Space 122\, at the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club (where he started) and at Dixon Place. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986.

SUMMARY:The Please Kill Me Holiday Party
DESCRIPTION:December 20 / 7 PM / Free\nWith readings by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain \nLurid\, insolent\, disorderly\, funny\, sometimes gross\, sometimes mean and occasionally touching . . . Resounds with authenticity.       —The New York Times \n Howl! Happening welcomes Legs and Gillian in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their quintessential\, uncensored oral history. A Time Out and Daily News Top 10 Book of the Year upon its initial release\, Please Kill Me is the first oral history of the most nihilist of all pop movements. Iggy Pop\, Danny Fields\, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone\, Malcom McLaren\, Jim Carroll\, and scores of other famous and infamous punk figures lend their voices to this definitive account of that outrageous\, explosive era. From its origins in the twilight years of Andy Warhol’s New York reign to its last gasps as 80s corporate rock\, the phenomenon known as punk is scrutinized\, eulogized\, and idealized by the people who were there and who made it happen. \nTelling it like it is . . . that’s what Howl! is about. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jonny Detiger Amplified Space
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project Presents\nA Kaleidoscope Installation for the Senses\n \nExploring how art interacts with space and how this interaction can yield surprising\, unexpected gifts\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present artist and designer Jonny Detiger’s Amplified Space. Detiger’s work celebrates life and joyfully bridges the gap between the mundane and the sublime. For this show at Howl!\, Detiger constructs a colorful walk-in environment in constant flux where the viewer is invited to participate\, interact\, and influence their changing surroundings. \nResonating with Howl! Happening’s connection with the music scene and Allen Kaprow’s sense of communal play\, Detiger’s exhibition and installation consists of three multicolored Plexiglas sculptural spaces that produce a complex pattern of constantly changing colors and shapes\, as well as independent\, interactive art works within these walls. Viewers may enter at different points in the installation and be enveloped by a kaleidoscope of optical and color combinations. These subtle nuances influence the perception and feeling of space—the “vibe” if you will—as the viewer actively participates in the variable nature of the work. \n“I am an artist and designer who through my work have always explored the understanding and communication of the human condition of happiness\,” says Detiger. “Using color\, sound\, smell and shape\, I design living interactive art environments with the aim of heightening this positive state of mind.” \nAmong the works contained in the kaleidoscopic walk-in sculptures is Boom Boom Box\, a sound installation with four individual seats that activate loops randomly generated by sitting on a chair. Sounds and beats create unique compositions depending on where\, when and with whom the viewer is sitting. Love Shower is a wall mounted\, metallic sculpture connected with a seat containing a speaker that plays “Love to Love You Baby” and showers the participant with aromatic bubbles infused with the essence of a Hawaiian flower known in folklore for its power to induce happiness. The visually dazzling Spin-O-Rama is a series of kinetic light sculptures that produce hypnotic\, mesmerizing patterns. Drum n’ Bass\, an interactive video projection\, has one screen displaying a drummer in front while the opposite features a bass player. When a viewer approaches the screen of the drummer or the bass player\, they will start playing. One musician or both can play at the same time until the viewer retreats. \nFocused on a comprehensive visual and aural immersive experience\, the viewer becomes an integral partner in creation of the work as they activate and direct the action\, progressing through the encompassing\, interactive\, emotionally bright and engaging works. \nDetiger grew up in Holland and attended school in Switzerland before studying business and economics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the London School of Economics and Political Science. His signature style of intricate art and mixed media sculpture explores human interaction through a kaleidoscope of iconic imagery\, text\, color and light. His furniture designs have won critical acclaim for postmodern excellence and have been featured in design books and international design magazines. \n“Art\, fashion\, design and music have always been an integral part of my life and art\,” says Detiger. “I move freely between these disciplines and create projects of ‘living art’ environments that incorporate sound\, smell\, design and color. Happiness\, humor and positivity are common themes that run through all of my work.” \n

SUMMARY:BETH B Voyeur
DESCRIPTION:A Video\, Sculpture and Photographic Installation \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present BETH B’s Voyeur\, an installation of video\, photography and sculpture that explores the varied perceptions of the female and male gaze. A new BETH B publication\, Nudes\, will be published by Howl! to coincide with the exhibition. \nBETH B is renowned for her groundbreaking films from the 70s such as Black Box\, Vortex\, and The Offenders. Throughout her prolific career\, she has produced more than 30 films in the documentary\, experimental and narrative genres\, working independently and through television. Her explosive film Exposed (2013)\, and many other films have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Wexner Center for the Arts\, and Walker Art Center. Her films have been screened at the New York Film Festival\, Sundance Film Festival\, Berlin International Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, Locarno International Film Festival and more. \nHer new feature documentary film Call Her Applebroog had its world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art and opened at the Metrograph theater in New York City and other theatrical venues. The film reveals renowned artist Ida Applebroog’s groundbreaking artwork\, which has inquired into the polemics of human relations\, but more intimately\, is about her dramatic struggle to overcome adversity. Her personal story is one that Beth B knows well—Ida is her mother and colleague. \nMore About BETH B

SUMMARY:Warhol & Dalí Panel Discussion with Torsten Otte
DESCRIPTION:February 19 / 7 PM / Free\n“Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol: Encounters in New York and Beyond”\nPanel Discussion with Torsten Otte\, Jade Albert\, George Mason\, Robert Heide\, and William Rothlein \nSalvador Dalí and Andy Warhol were two of the 20th century’s most significant and notorious artists. Led by Otte\, the panelists—all witnesses of encounters between Dalí and Warhol—discuss\, gossip\, and reminisce about these “art celebrities” whose fame was the result of accomplished self-staging\, along with the skillful marketing of their personalities and work. Otte is joined on the panel by photographer Jade Albert\, who shot many photos of Dalí and Warhol together and was a photographer for Interview magazine; playwright Robert Heide\, who worked with Warhol on projects including a filmed version of his play\, The Bed; actor William Rothlein\, a close friend of Dalí and Gala; and George Mason\, a friend of Dalí and Warhol. \nWarhol\, who was a generation younger and a notorious partygoer who provocatively declared that he went “to the opening of anything\, including a toilet seat\,” occupied a spot in public awareness that Dalí had previously paved through his Surrealist antics. \nWhat is less well known is the fact that these two wildly popular artists were in contact with one another on a regular basis throughout the 60s and 70s. In this first-ever comparative study\, Torsten Otte offers a brief biography of both artists before reconstructing their encounters\, which took place mainly in New York. He investigates how the artists felt about one another\, exploring the extent to which Dalí and Warhol were bound by a true artist friendship\, or whether competition and envy played a role. \nTorsten Otte is an attorney and art historian. He is the author of a biography of Salvador Dalí\, published in 2006. He lives in Berlin. Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol: Encounters in New York and Beyond is published by Scheidegger & Spiess – University of Chicago Press and includes more than 60 photographs. \nImage: Andy Warhol\, Candice Bergen\, and Salvador Dalí at the Metropolitan Club in New York City\, March 17\, 1976. SUMMARY:Launch of 2017 Poetry Jukebox
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 22 / 7 PM / Free\nOpening reception with the artists and poets as well as a reading by contributors Bob Holman\, Hettie Jones\, Camille Rankine\, David Henderson\, Tommy Pico\, and more. \nPresented by Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project in association with Bowery Arts + Science and the Czech Board of Tourism. \nThe words and voices of dynamic and outspoken writers come to life at the launch of the new lineup for the Poetry Jukebox\, an interactive public art project. Just push a button and hear well-known and up-and-coming young wordsmiths perform their works in the open\, outdoor ambiance of the East Village. The Poetry Jukebox is located on Extra Place directly next to Howl! Happening Gallery (6 East 1st Street between Bowery and 2nd Avenue). \nFor 2017\, we celebrate the intersectionality and diversity of our contemporary culture. Writers across generations\, nationalities\, races\, and orientations have contributed their voices as a collective response to foster dialogue\, social justice\, and respect. The jukebox will feature almost two dozen writers across the American poetic spectrum including Eileen Myles\, Paul Muldoon\, Bob Holman\, and Claudia Rankine; rising stars Tommy Pico\, Dorothea Lasky\, and Lauren Hunter; outspoken slam poets like Mahogany L Brown and Beau Sia; 2016 National Book Award winner Daniel Borzutzky; Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University co-founder Anne Waldman; as well as voices of the Umbra movement Steve Cannon and David Henderson. \nThe Poetry Jukebox was created by coffeehouse owner Ondřej Kobza and cultural manager Michaela Hečková of the Czech Republic as part of Piána na ulici\, (Pianos on the Streets)\, an ongoing project which focuses on the animation of public spaces. Pianos on the Street deploys over a hundred pianos\, chess tables\, and jukeboxes on the streets\, in squares and parks around the globe to make cities more livable\, poetic and playful. Versions of the Poetry Jukebox have been installed in Prague\, Kiev\, London\, Brighton\, and Venice; this is the first and heretofore only North American Poetry Jukebox. \n“We at Czech Tourism promote traveling to the Czech Republic based on the idea that the greatest pleasure of travel comes from connecting with people and cultures through authentic experiences\,” says Jiří Dužár. “And that’s exactly what the Poetry Jukebox was made for. We can’t be more proud to be a part of the installation that speaks the values we hold dear to such a culturally diverse audience here in New York City.” \nIn 2016\, the Poetry Jukebox showcased the Beats during Howl! Happening’s Beat and Beyond festival\, and during the holidays we featured a “punk” line up of original 70s CBGB stars doing their inimitable renditions of Xmas songs. \n2017 Poetry Jukebox Contributors:\nMax Blagg\nDanile Borzutzky\nMahogany L Browne\nSteve Cannon\nMartín Espada\nDavid Henderson\nBob Holman\nLauren Hunter\nHettie Jones\nDorothea Lasky\nAda Límon\nPaul Muldoon\nEileen Myles\nTommy Pico\nCamille Rankine\nClaudia Rankine\nNathaniel Siegel\nBeau Sia\nPamela Sneed\nSparrow\nAnne Waldman\nMatvei Yankelevich

SUMMARY:This Side of Heaven (2016) a film by Todd Verow
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening and Q&A\nThursday\, March 2 / 7 PM / Free\nJoin the auteur emeritus of New Queer Cinema\, Todd Verow\, star Philly Abe\, and special guests for a Q&A following the screening. \nHowl! favorite Philly Abe stars as V\, an older trans woman desperately trying to hold on to her rent-stabilized apartment in New York City. She has endured many tragedies involving former lovers\, friends\, and acquaintances over the 26 years she has lived in her rat\, roach and junkie infested building. She has survived corrupt landlord after corrupt landlord but her struggles have left her agoraphobic and reclusive… \nThe star-studded cast including Brandon Olson\, Penny Arcade\, Justin Rodriguez\, Jake Deckard\, Jayne Nicolletti\, and James Kleinmann rounds out this compelling New York story of one woman’s off-balance life and the fight against gentrification. Produced by Bangor films. \nAbout Todd Verow\nTodd Verow was born in Bangor\, Maine on November 11\, 1966. He started acting and directing plays as a child and making movies while attending Rhode Island School of Design. He made short experimental films and worked as a cinematographer before making his feature film debut with Frisk (which had its European premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in the Forum 20 years ago). Starting his own production company\, Bangor Films\, Todd has directed over 20 features and numerous shorts\, establishing himself as the most prolific auteur emeritus of the New Queer Cinema. He is fiercely independent\, and finances\, writes\, produces\, directs\, photographs\, and edits his movies himself. \nAbout Philly Abe\nPhilly Abe is a multifaceted artist living in New York City. Her acting credits include many films with the Kuchar Brothers (George and Mike Kuchar) and Todd Verow. She is an intuitive performer. While working on a CBC Radio documentary on Lindsay Kemp\, she was offered a scholarship and never looked back. Ritual and trance are an important part of her work\, in an unending chain from political street theater in the 60s to underground film. Her mercurial androgynous performances have gained her a cult following around the world. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
