Coraggio and sculptors Ray Kelly and Robert Parker were most responsible for creating the bulwark of the sprawling steel-and-debris phoenix that arose from the rubble of a vacant lot on Rivington later added to by dozens of known and unknown artists (including Jean-Michel Basquiat)\, demarcating a kind of “temporary autonomous zone” that became the locus of an alternative Lower East Side culture\, which thrived into the mid-nineties. ”\n– Michael Carter\, from the catalog for Linus Coraggio’s Ramifications \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Linus Coraggio’s Ramifications\, a one-man show of sculpture\, painting\, and mixed media opening Thursday\, September 12\, 2019 from 6–8 PM. The exhibition runs through October 10\, with a special closing event on October 12. \nHowl! mounts its most ambitious installation to date. Linus Coraggio is a central figure in downtown New York’s early period of explosive art experimentation and cross-pollination of cultural ideas. Street artist and New York City native\, Coraggio is best known for his abstract metal sculpture. An ardent proponent of recycling\, he uses materials that can be found in vacant lots or building sites across Lower Manhattan and the city’s outer boroughs. This use of found materials is an essential component of his process. Coraggio’s richly graphic\, welded street constructions provided a 3-D counterpoint to the 2-D graffiti street art by contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, as well as the masters of New York subway graffiti. \nThe current exhibition surveys Coraggio’s entire body of work\, including paintings in expressionist and graffiti style\, mobiles\, furniture\, neon\, sculpture\, mixed-media collage\, and both classic and 3-D graffiti. The exhibition will also include recent collaborations with well-known downtown artists\, and an installation of his painted and “sculpturalized” car that has become a recognized cultural fixture on the streets of New York City over the last 10 years. \nCoraggio’s “outstallations”—welded constructions emblazoned with sociopolitical graffiti bolted to signposts—and his pioneering street sculpture utilizing all manner of detritus have branded his work with a gritty\, refined aesthetic and style. His abstract sculpture is inspired by the canon of 20th century masters David Smith\, Beverly Pepper\, Richard Hunt\, Issac Witkin\, Mark di Suvero\, Alexander Calder\, and his own favorite American iconoclast\, Simon Rodia—the visionary creator of Watts Towers. \nCoraggio is a founder of the Rivington School sculptors group. He welded a massive post-apocalyptic sculpture garden of rusted metal that was a landmark at Forsyth and Rivington Streets in New York’s Lower East Side. Coraggio was also the architect of the Gas Station\, a performance space\, after-hours club\, and sculpture garden that sat on Second Street and Avenue B well into the 90s. These seminal downtown art spaces were the vanguard of wild autonomous art activism in the face of rapid gentrification. \nThe son of avant-garde composer Henry Brant\, with whom he often collaborated\, Coraggio grew up accompanying his mother Pat on her trips across the Rust Belt as she photographed abandoned industrial sites for her Village Voice column. This experience informed his later choice of “used” metal as his medium when he discovered welding at Purchase College. \nCoraggio has been included in several important books\, catalogs\, films\, and shows about street art and the downtown 80s and 90s art scene. Internationally\, he has completed sponsored large-scale public art in Helsinki\, Rotterdam\, Linz\, and Nagoya and Osaka\, Japan.

DESCRIPTION:Re-visions by Marcia Resnick \nBook Launch and Signing \n7–9pm / Free \nIn 1975\, while driving her car in Manhattan\, Marcia Resnick became embroiled in a car accident\, and her entire life flashed before her. When she awoke in the hospital\, she began to think about all of the events which led to her being there. She began to write ideas and draw pictures considering her life thus far\, in preparation for creating a new book. In 1978\, her poignant and ironic autobiographical book of staged photographs about female adolescence\, Re-visions\, was first published by The Coach House Press in Toronto. Andy Warhol called it “Bad\,” and according to Allen Ginsberg it was “Sharp…for a girl.” Now\, 41 years later\, longtime friend Lydia Lunch pays homage to the second edition of Re-visions: “A sweet twist which whispers in mysterious tones predicting the delicious perversion of a budding adolescence.” \nSwiss art-book publisher Edition Patrick Frey will launch the republication of Re-visions. Marcia will be signing copies of her book. The event is open and free to the public.  \nAbout Marcia Resnick \nMarcia Resnick was born in Brooklyn\, NY\, and first exhibited her art at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum when she was 5 years old. She is an alumnus of NYU\, Cooper Union\, and California Institute of the Arts. Resnick returned to New York where she taught photography by day and frequented the Mudd Club and CBGB at night\, encountering and photographing the denizens of the downtown arts and music scene. She self-published artist’s books See\, Landscape\, and Tahitian Eve in 1975. Her humor column Resnick’s Believe-it-Or-Not\, consisting of a photograph and a paragraph\, was published in the Soho Weekly News from 1979-1982. In 2015\, Insight Editions published her book of portraits of iconic men\, Punks\, Poets & Provocateurs: New York City Bad Boys 1977-1982. Her photographs can be found in numerous books and periodicals\, are exhibited internationally\, and are in major private and museum collections.

Workshop participants will be guided by Coraggio in the creation of their own miniature sculptures\, utilizing wood\, toothpicks\, glue sticks\, and imagination. Participants may bring their own small found objects to use for their sculptures; however\, Linus will also bring a large stash of materials. \nAfter participants finish their sculpture\, they’ll have the option of drawing their creation from the angle and distance they prefer. All additional materials for the workshop are provided. No previous experience in sculpture is necessary\, and the workshop is free. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make his shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative\, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises. \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nPerformance is anything done with purpose and style—Tom Murrin \nHowl! Happening houses the collection of Tom Murrin. Tom\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the “Godfather of Performance Art.” Every full moon—without fail\, paid booking or not\, in all seasons and whatever the weather—he performed his Luna Macaroona Full Moon Show. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron\, and many others. When he didn’t have a club date\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement/Creative Learning\, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature\, and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. LMCC.net

Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Passed and Present\, an exhibition and installation by Tessa Hughes-Freeland comprising a variety of cinematic elements. Known for her contributions to the Cinema of Transgression movement\, the exhibition includes single-channel and multiple projections\, an interactive kaleidoscope\, sculptural fans\, and a series of special screenings including the premiere of her recently completed Lost Movie/The Bug. \nConfrontational\, transgressive\, provocative\, and poetic\, Hughes-Freeland approaches filmmaking from a multiplicity of styles. Her work includes underground films\, classic narrative\, expanded cinematic performances\, experimental “automatic” films assembled entirely from found footage\, and delicate fans made from film of all gauges.  \nIn live-action films\, as well as collaged films from found footage\, Hughes-Freeland taps into the sophisticated emotional filters we erect to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Images crash into one another in disorienting ways. Drawing upon the mind-altering potential of spontaneous transformation and the power of myth\, her films are essentially “psychedelic”—conjuring ineffable experiences beyond the commonplace. \n“My films are ritualistic and atavistic—inspired by dreams\, visions\, and imagination. Sometimes the nucleus of an idea for a film starts with an object. The original idea for Hireath came from the top of the Christmas cake\, which my mother made every year\,” the artist says. \nHiraeth\, a Welsh concept expressing a deep longing for home\, is based on memory and loss. Drawing loosely on paganism and the mythology of female archetypes as seers\, the film evokes an arc of Hughes-Freeland’s experience as a woman over time.  \nOther Wise\, a large multiple projection\, extends the sentiment of loss present in Hiraeth. Working directly with wide-ranging sources—film made from Letraset\, handmade slides\, and original ethereal imagery—the work includes a poetic secret message to the departed based on imagery from a dream. The naturally transmutable iconography and romantic framework of the piece create a visual poem expressing the metaphysical poles of connection and otherness\, and the beauty of transformation. The projection screen is formally linked to the film fans by its concertina-like shape.  \nIn turn\, the kaleidoscope uses Other Wise to create further fragmentation within a circular form. A primitive cinematic device devoid of technology\, it is fashioned from a camera tripod and case. Interactive and fun\, this piece invites the viewer to see the world and the exhibition in a magical state.  \n“Found footage is the basis of much of my films. Similarly\, a found object can inspire an entire film. I see these as signifiers or emotional triggers that become a part of my own symbolic language. The fans consist of found film in all gauges—home movies; Hollywood studio films; pornographic films; or random footage found in thrift stores\, yard sales\, or just lying on the street\,” Hughes-Freeland explains.  \nAs part of the public programs in conjunction with the show\, Howl! will screen a selection of Hughes-Freeland’s films including Baby Doll (1981)\, a docu-portrait of go-go dancers\, and Nymphomania (1994)\, a brutal and a comedic critique of the dialectic of male/female sexuality.  \n  \nABOUT TESSA HUGHES-FREELAND \nTessa Hughes-Freeland has been making films since the 1980s and is considered a member of the Cinema of Transgression movement. Her films have been screened internationally in museums\, galleries\, and seedy bars\, including MoMA\, MOCA\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, New Museum\, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art. Currently\, five of her films are featured in an exhibition touring museums throughout Asia\, including Seoul\, South Korea. The evening celebrates the release of Rise and Shine: Day 1\, an album of songs from the play. Joined by a full band and vocal cast\, Davis previews selections from the new recording. \nThe play\, which focuses on a group of friends who come together at a Lower East Side nightclub in the summer and fall of 2001\, was written by Davis and Vega over a 13-year period and completed by Davis after Vega’s untimely passing in 2013. In tribute to Vega\, Davis has recorded all 41 songs with a full vocal cast and is releasing the material in chapters—one for each of the five days represented in the musical’s timeline. \nThe cast of the Rise and Shine recording\, several members of which will be in attendance\, includes Davis\, Mike Keaney\, Bryan Thomas\, Heather Maloney\, Matthew Koma\, Avi Buffalo\, Shea Diamond\, CJ Ramone\, Brian Dewan\, Miss Guy\, Lindsey Anderson\, Wendy Ip\, Dicky Barrett\, Bradley Goodrich\, Domenic Maltempi\, Alex Dubovoy\, and Jessy Moss. The album was mixed by Tim Latham (who worked on the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording album). \nJed Davis has released over a dozen albums since the early 90s; toured as keyboardist for diverse artists like Avi Buffalo and Jessica Simpson; produced records by Jobriath and Hand Habits; and written songs that have been recorded and performed by Daniel Johnston\, Matthew Koma\, King Missile\, and several Ramones. Miller’s presentation at Howl! Happening marks the recent revamping of the 98 Bowery website\, first launched 10 years ago. \nDrawing from the site’s archive of photos and video clips\, Miller recounts stories about Harry’s Bar and CBGB; the seminal 1978 Punk Art show; collaborative work with Bettie Ringma\, Curt Hoppe\, Alan Moore\, and Paul Tschinkel—all residents at 98 Bowery; his year in Amsterdam; and the varied roles he played in the East Village art scene and in the rise of hip-hop culture in the 1980s. The 98 Bowery website has been visited by more than 600\,000 people. \nMiller is well known as the curator of the Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk exhibition at the Queens Museum (2016)\, and for his video interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat in Paul Tschinkel’s Art/new york series. His online store Gallery 98 has reanimated vintage art ephemera. \nMiller is a scholar (Ph.D.\, Institute of Fine Arts\, NYC) and a counterculture provocateur (his interactive art series Draw a Penis and Vagina is 98 Bowery’s most popular page). Underlying it all is his understanding of the roots of contemporary culture in the 1970s and 80s\, and the direct link between the interactive strategies that emerged in art then and the current world of selfies and reality television. \nAbout Marc H Miller\nMarc H Miller arrived in New York from California in 1968 to pursue a Ph.D. in art history at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts (1979). Miller is an artist\, curator\, writer\, publisher\, and educator. His multifaceted career is unified by an interest in pictorial images and their inherent ability to tell stories. \nFrom 1981-85\, he worked with Paul Tschinkel on ART/new york\, an educational videotape series. He was a columnist for the East Village Eye (1983-85)\, and the co-editor of ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery (1985). In 2001 he founded Ephemera Press\, which published illustrated maps and walking tour guides\, including one of the East Village. \nMiller was a curator at the Queens Museum from 1985 to 1991\, and returned as guest curator for Hey Ho Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk (2016). As an artist in collaboration with Bettie Ringma and Curt Hoppe\, he has exhibited at OK Harris Gallery (1974)\, Art Basel (1980)\, the New Museum (2011)\, and Stigter Van Doesberg Gallery in Amsterdam (2018). In this two-part workshop\, the first half focuses on kaleidoscope-making using cardboard tubes and mirrored plastic. During the second half\, participants will use smartphones to record a mini-film made from their handmade slides projected through a slide projector with a kaleidoscope eyepiece. \nAll materials are provided. Happening is pleased to announce the launch of the City Lights publication of the Collected Poems of Bob Kaufman (1925-1986) with an evening hosted by Raymond Foye. The celebration features poet David Henderson performing with bassist William Parker and trumpet\, flute\, and reed player Daniel Carter. The program also includes poets Maria Damon\, Patricia Spears Jones\, Kaye McDonough\, Uche Nduka\, Anne Waldman\, and others. \nBob Kaufman was an important figure in the poetry of the Beat Generation. Born in New Orleans of African American\, Creole\, Jewish\, and Native American heritage\, Kaufman embraced jazz\, surrealism\, and the poetry of Lorca and the Harlem Renaissance. He had a significant career as a merchant seaman and labor organizer before appearing on the Beat scene in San Francisco in 1958. His books include Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness (New Directions\, 1965)\, Golden Sardine (City Lights\, 1967)\, and The Ancient Rain (New Directions\, 1981)\, as well as two broadsides from City Lights\, Second April (1958) and Does the Secret Mind Whisper (1959). \nThe Collected Poems of Bob Kaufman brings together his complete surviving works\, including a significant body of unpublished poems and work written in the final years of his life. Edited by Neeli Cherkovski\, Raymond Foye\, and Tate Swindell\, the anthology was published by City Lights Books in 2019. \nBIOGRAPHIES \nFeatured reader David Henderson is a poet and writer who co-founded the Black Arts Movement in New York in the early 60s. He co-published Umbra magazine\, an important literary journal of the 60s\, which featured Bob Kaufman. He has published numerous books of poetry and has taught at schools and universities throughout the United States\, including the University of California\, Berkeley. His biography of Jimi Hendrix\, ‘Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky\, is in its third edition\, and his collaborations with Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra have recently been re-released in deluxe packages from Columbia Legacy\, and Evidence. \nDavid Henderson will be accompanied by bassist and composer William Parker\, and trumpet\, flute\, and reeds virtuoso Daniel Carter. William Parker has been the organizer and guiding light behind New York’s Vision Festival\, which he founded in 1996. He has over 50 releases and has appeared as sideman and collaborator with Cecil Taylor\, Charles Gayle\, John Zorn\, and many others. He is also an author and publisher. Happening is pleased to present Antony Zito’s My Father Was a Satyr. Fascinated by the detritus of everyday life left on the curbs of his East Village neighborhood\, Zito collects discarded objects to use as the basis for his paintings. Through the artist’s hand\, these artifacts’ stories—steeped in narratives all their own—merge with portraits of Zito’s peers\, adhering the inherent emotional energy of the intuitively rendered portraits to layers of the city’s history. \nIn the lineage of modern artists who worked across mediums and used unconventional materials and found objects\, with My Father Was a Satyr\, Zito creates his biggest installation to date—a towering construction layered with portraits\, metal sculpture\, and scavenged eye candy\, to form a whimsical ziggurat. \nMade up of large-scale welded metal sculpture flanked by sprawling\, multi-panel figurative paintings\, all of the materials are scavenged from street corners\, dump sites\, and scrap yards\, continuing his career-long tradition of painting portraits on found objects. The sculptures are built with an array of rusted and painted elements\, deftly combined to animate the form and feeling of a living entity—just as his portraits combine collage and paint with found materials\, turning recycled ingredients into renderings of living\, breathing people. \n \n“New York is a city of faces\,” says Zito\, “and I am obsessed with them. Whether it’s the local bodega owner\, the billboard model\, the lost soul on the corner\, or the people I most enjoy spending time with\, I dive into faces\, searching for their narrative\, for some message or meaning. I gather these faces in my imagination\, mixing them with memories and experiences I’ve absorbed in the course of my life in New York.” \nAntony Zito is a portrait painter and collector of objects\, who moved to the Lower East Side from New England in 1992. Zito has spent more than 20 years on New York’s Lower East Side\, where he ran a gallery and portrait studio on Ludlow Street through 2006. His portraits of the local characters illustrate a sweeping line through the 90s and 2000s in the East Village rock and art scenes. The New York Post has called his paintings “sensual\,” and his renderings of people on recycled materials prompted The Village Voice to refer to him as “a master of the found object.” \nHis work has been exhibited and collected in the U.S.\, UK\, Italy\, France\, Spain\, Belgium\, Mexico\, and Japan. Several of Zito’s portraits and other artworks appear in the Jim Jarmusch films Coffee and Cigarettes and Broken Flowers. Zito recently completed a two-story mural in the East Village\, and is currently working on a documentary film about the Mars Bar\, illuminating his corner of the East Village and Lower East Side in the 90s and early aughts. \n

SUMMARY:Bob Holman Publication Party: 'Life Poem' and 'The Unspoken'
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is pleased to celebrate our friend\, Howl! board member\, and poet extraordinaire Bob Holman on the occasion of the publication of two new poetry books. Written 50 years apart\, Bowery Books will simultaneously release Life Poem and The Unspoken. The books serve not only as bookends to a lifetime immersed in words\, performance\, and the avant-garde\, but they also show the evolution of an artist\, an art form\, and a downtown art scene that’s gone from Allen Ginsberg to Lou Reed to Eileen Myles to Mahogany L. Browne. \nIn a New Yorker profile\, Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote that Bob Holman has “done more to bring poetry to cafes and bars than anyone since Ferlinghetti.” Holman brought the spoken-word scene and poetry slams to New York City\, first as the co-director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe\, then as the founder of the Bowery Poetry Club. He further democratized poetry through the award-winning PBS documentaries The United States of Poetry and Language Matters\, which he produced and hosted. And then there are his 17 published works and thousands of rollicking live performances. Quite a ride for\, as Holman calls himself\, the son of the only Jew in Harlan\, Kentucky. \nLife Poem is a recently rediscovered book-length poem Holman wrote at age 21\, new to poetry and first in its thrall. Filled with “jounce and pounce\,” as Gwendolyn Brooks says\, it’s a hippie diary full of communes\, Vietnam\, romance\, and a driving love for language that ended up lasting a lifetime. The Unspoken is a collection of recent works\, written by Holman\, a widower in his 70s\, still devoted to poetry\, but now with decades of experience\, memories\, and loss to inform it. There are poems of all sorts: personal\, confessional\, poems set to music\, poems that are meant to be shouted or whispered. There are poems addressed to his late wife\, the painter Elizabeth Murray; to their children; and to the countless artists and poets he’s encountered over the last half century. \nThe books show the roots of Holman’s own personal mix of Appalachian storytelling\, spoken-word poetry bravado\, and New York whimsy and humor. Both poems are a raucous celebration of a life lived as art\, and an invitation to the reader to join the party. In the words of poet Naomi Shihab Nye\, “His life gusto and poetry voice keep the world turning.” \nCrowned “Ringmaster of the Spoken Word” by the New York Daily News\, Bob Holman has performed his poems with a punk band in Kiev\, a griot in Timbuktu\, a ballet company in San Francisco. As the original Slam Master of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe; creator of the world’s first spoken-word record label\, Mouth Almighty/Mercury; and founder of the Bowery Poetry Club; Holman has played a central role in the spoken-word and slam-poetry movements of the last several decades. He is the author of 17 poetry collections; A Couple of Ways of Doing Something (Aperture\, a collaboration with Chuck Close); and has taught at Princeton\, Columbia\, NYU\, Bard\, and The New School. Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron\, and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid-80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986.

Among the artists Bayley has photographed are Iggy Pop\, the Ramones\, Debbie Harry and Blondie\, Richard Hell\, Elvis Costello\, the Sex Pistols\, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers\, Ian Dury\, Brian Eno\, Nick Lowe\, The Damned\, The Clash\, the Dead Boys\, X-Ray Spex\, Squeeze\, and a reunited New York Dolls. \nThe film includes candid interviews with the photographer and a peek into her longtime St. Marks Place apartment. Included are all of Roberta’s iconic photos—behind-the-scenes images\, classic live shots\, and intimate portraits\, plus many others rarely seen. The 33-minute film was created for Lasch’s television show F#TV and will be followed by a Q&A with Bayley and the director. \nArriving in New York in the spring of 1974\, Bayley soon began working the door at CBGBs—New York’s legendary punk club—photographing the musicians who played there. She soon went to work for Punk Magazine and is one of the main photographers to visually chronicle the early punk-rock scene. \nBayley’s photographs are featured in countless books and magazines on punk. She has exhibited in New York\, Los Angeles\, Buenos Aires\, Berlin\, Sydney\, Paris\, Austin\, Portland\, Amsterdam\, Tokyo\, Hong Kong\, London\, Mexico City\, and Pittsburgh. She co-wrote Patti Smith: An Unauthorized Biography (Simon & Schuster\, 1999) and published Blondie: Unseen 1976-1980 (Plexus\, 2006)\, her take on the seminal new-wave band.
