SUMMARY:Philly Abe This Side of Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Wednesday April 4 / 6–8 PM / Free\n. . . a hybrid practice that has consistently harnessed both punk irreverence and graffiti transgression to channel demons. . . into the exquisite\, glowing collages. —Jenifer P Borum\, Raw Vision magazine \nArtist and performer Philly Abe (July 8\, 1949–January 30\, 2018) was a vortex of energy and core member of the Howl! Happening Tribe. Whether performing on the street outside the gallery in the impromptu and wacky Full Moon Show\, cheering on her friends at events and exhibitions\, or just being her own chaotic\, colorful self\, Philly/Kondor8 was a visionary who never stopped creating and reinventing herself through her performances\, collages\, and paintings. This Side of Heaven pays tribute to her work and life\, as we mourn her passing with a memorial exhibition. \nPhilly was born in 1949 and grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. She attended Penn State and received a degree in educational communications. Always a rebel rouser\, she was involved with some anarchist groups in the late 60s\, and in the 70s she moved to Toronto with her then-husband who worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. There she became involved with documentary radio\, studied dance with Lindsay Kemp\, and opened a punk store before heading West to more adventures. She made her way to San Francisco\, where she met Mike and George Kuchar\, with whom she would later make several films. Eventually\, in 1983\, she moved to the Lower East Side\, which was to be her home until her untimely death. \nOnce in New York\, Philly was fully engaged in the nightlife and cultural scene. She performed at the Pyramid\, Area\, Limbo Lounge\, 8BC\, Danceteria\, and did what it took to get by in the no holds barred atmosphere of creativity and community that reigned before the era of gentrification. It’s reputed that early on she even “slept on the stage of ABC No Rio.” \nIn January of this year\, she was the recipient of an Acker Award\, a tribute to the avant-garde arts community who praised her work and life “in defiance of convention.” Her bio from their program outlines her creative trajectory: She was part of 7 Days of Creation at ABC No Rio in 1983\, and the New Leonard Beach Hotel Project of artist-decorated rooms in Miami Beach in 1989\, both exhibitions curated by Allied Productions. She was the star of many films by director Todd Verow and his muse for more than two decades. Notable Verow films starring Philly include Once and Future Queen\, The Trouble of Perpetual Deja-Vu\, and most recently This Side of Heaven (2016). She starred in Agent of Paradise by Mary Bellis and was involved in screenings at Naked Eye Cinema. Her film credits also include appearances in the films of Jack Waters\, Carl George\, and Mike Kuchar. \nIn the 90s Philly fronted the punk band Eager Meat\, which recorded the album America is a Theme Park. In 2004\, she co-founded the noize/art collective Infinity SS (Saint Stanton) with Stanton Street artist friends Carlucci ‘The Magician’ Bencivenga\, Steve Ellis\, James Curtright\, Chris Morrow\, Craig Klein\, Kosuke Aoki\, Mayuka Nobuta\, and Dave Vulcan. They collaborated on art and their noize band performed at The Knitting Factory\, Arlene’s Grocery\, and CBGBs. \nFor the Acker Awards\, she described her work as “old style thrown against the wall of now—spray paint noize markers collage—with one foot in the Stone Age and the other in string theory.” Her work was featured on the cover of Raw Vision issue #66 in 2009\, and in exhibitions with Christina Varga in Woodstock\, New York\, and Phyllis Kind Gallery in Chelsea.

SUMMARY:Disconnected Touch A Full Moon Show
DESCRIPTION:A Full Moon Show Hosted by Rani O’Brien\nThe Full Moon Show: A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\nMissed Connections\nI was sitting on the BDFM train heading down to the East Village toward my favorite coffee spot\, Blue Bottle\, when I saw you delicately bolstering your chiffon scarf (which matched the natural rouge of your cheeks). You sat next to me\, crossing your legs\, sporting the hip displacement of Fosse himself. You wore a velvet blazer with a button that read “East Village Evictee: I Made Noise!” with a City Lore book bag featuring a painting of the Can Man. We caught eyes\, awkwardly over our shoulders. You glanced down at my Patagonia vest—your eyes rocketed to my REI backpack\, then to my Lulus—as if to tell me I was emblematic of everything you stood against. I was the problem. Only then did you give me the deepest look I have ever been graced with. Our thighs touched. For a moment I thought our entire beings would too. An alert popped up on my phone—it was a live pic of my friend’s baby dancing naked at Coachella. I laughed. When I looked back to you\, you flew off the subway car faster than I could ask for your Instagram handle. Yet\, you looked back with that soul piercing gaze. \nDon’t miss the connection: Join Rani O’Brien and Jazmine Corneille\, Sophia Gutchinov and Dana Stern on the sidewalk outside Howl! Happening\, so we can slide into each other’s Direct Messages. \nDisconnected Touch\nDirected by Rani O’Brien\nDevised by and featuring Jazmine Cornielle\, Sophia Gutchinov\, and Dana Stern\nAdditional sound by Matthew Sells \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \n Howl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron\, and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop-up performances on the street. \nAbout the Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive\, comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012)\, also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam\, and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Starting in the mid 80s\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club\, and Dixon Place called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear onstage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street\, in 1986. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement/Creative Learning\, supported by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature\, and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. LMCC.net

SUMMARY:Cream-Pie-In-The-Phace Full Moon
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Hapi Phace in Praise of Philly \nWhen the moon hits your eye like a banana cream pie it’s…\nThe Full Moon Show: A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention\nStarting at 7.18 Sharp\nCalling all dimensions! Join Hapi Phace for a moonrise non-linear performance pie-in-the-face ritual inspired by the memory of Philly Abe—his longtime art and life collaborator and neo-shamanistic a-go-go dance partner—to celebrate the Cream-Pie-In-The-Phace Full Moon\, in conjunction with the exhibit Philly Abe: This Side of Heaven (April 4–May 6\, 2018) at Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project. \nHapi Phace is a performance personality and tapR-mâché™—his proprietary “dry papier-mâché” method that employs cardboard and duct tape—sculptor from Queens. (Well\, actually\, he is from normal parents.) Hapi and Philly co-wrote and performed together—and in—each other’s pieces\, primarily during the 80s downtown nightclub scene. Later\, Hapi ventured into Way-Off-Broadway theater\, while Philly wove through multiple creative circles\, most prolifically with experimental and independent filmmakers\, especially The Kuchar brothers—George and Mike—and Todd Verow. \nPhilly Abe (1949-2018) was an iconic downtown personality\, artist\, tenants’ rights activist\, and decades-long Ridge Street neighbor of Tom Murrin\, the originator and omphalos of The Full Moon Show. Like Tom\, Philly’s artistic energies and output found outlet in the discarded and unnoticed. Both artists imagined rags\, remnants\, and refuse into an art form that spanned a universe from the slapstick to the shamanistic. \nDress Code: spontaneously-combustible color combinations; fairy wings\, demon horns and petroglyphic face paint; Tibetan skull anything; fun-fur ass-less leotards; black turtleneck sweater\, skull-and-crossbones-print ski pants\, and a Breton top; 80s 14th Street off-the-rack rubber chickens; non-binary mismatched socks and roadkill; come-as-you-are and leave-as-you-weren’t; rhinestones\, bustier\, and cat-eyed glasses. \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. SUMMARY:Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat
DESCRIPTION:An Exhibition and Special Events\nCurated by Sara Driver\, Carlo McCormick\, Mary-Ann Monforton and Howl! Happening \nOpening Sunday\, May 13\, 2018 / 6–8 PM / Free \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to announce Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat\, a group exhibition focusing on the artists and scene around Jean-Michel Basquiat’s teen-aged\, pre-fame years. Curated by Howl! Happening\, Sara Driver\, Carlo McCormick\, and Mary-Ann Monforton\, Zeitgeist complements and amplifies the theatrical release of Sara Driver’s film BOOM FOR REAL The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat from Magnolia Pictures. The film premieres on May 11th at IFC\, New York. \nThe period covered in the exhibition and film tells the story of Jean-Michel’s early work\, peers\, and creative community in gritty\, pre-AIDS\, downtown New York—before the rise of the 80s art and real estate juggernaut. It was a time when decay\, drugs\, and dissolution fueled a boom in creativity where the definition of fame\, success\, and power was not based on money\, Facebook likes\, and self-promotion. For these creators\, to be a penniless published poet or a musician gigging at CBs was the height of success. In the rawness of the work\, the focus on street art and graffiti\, and the experimentation and cross-pollination of styles and disciplines\, the era has become a flash point for younger generations seeking to learn about and understand the authenticity\, closeness\, and community expressed in the work of the artists in Zeitgeist. \nThe exhibition—and a series of special events—illuminate Basquiat’s work and that of his friends and other artists\, writers\, filmmakers\, and musicians who emerged from that scene\, including: \nAlexis Adler\, Charlie Ahearn\, Ted Barron\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Philippe Bordaz\, Robert Carrithers\, Henry Chalfant\, Brett De Palma\, Vivienne Dick\, Jane Dickson\, Al Diaz\, Barbara Ess\, Coleen Fitzgibbon\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Futura\, Robert Goldman aka Bobby G\, Godlis\, Nan Goldin\, Richard\, Hambleton\, Michael Holman\, Becky Howland\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland\, Jim Jarmusch\, Justen\, Ladda\, Ann Messner\, Mary-Ann Monforton\, James Nares\, Glenn O’Brien\, Franc Palaia\, Lee Quiñones\, Walter Robinson\, Christy Rupp\, Luc Sante\, Kenny Scharf\, Paul Tschinkel\, Robin Winters\, and Bob Gruen. \nSpecial events will include: \n\nA panel discussion featuring Alexis Adler\, Felice Rosser\, Lee Quiñones\, Al Diaz\, and more\nA screening of Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary Burroughs: The Movie from the Criterion Collection\nAn evening of films featuring an experimental film by Basquiat’s bandmate Michael Holman\, and Paul Tschinkel’s film about New York/New Wave\, curator Diego Cortez’s groundbreaking exhibition at PS1 in 1981\nA night performance and readings by Felice Rosser and Luc Sante.\nReadings\n\nFilm Series in collaboration with Anthology Film Archives. Anthology Film Archives will present a special\, 2-part film series to celebrate the Zeitgeist exhibition at Howl! and the release of Boom for Real. Part 1 (May 4-14) brings together a selection of films about or involving Basquiat\, as well as works that came out of the same era and milieu. For Part 2 (May 17-29)\, various participants in Boom for Real will guest-select films from the period that they feel have been overlooked\, or simply films that influenced their own work. Curators include Sara Driver\, Charlie Ahearn\, Coleen Fitzgibbon\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland\, Jim Jarmusch\, James Nares\, Lee Quinones\, Felice Rosser\, and Luc Sante. SUMMARY:The Downtown Luminaries and Universal Interaction #3
DESCRIPTION:A Book Release by Robert Carrithers and Happening by Ammo with DJ Dany Johnson\nJoin Howl! Happening for a happening with Ammo (aka Shawn McQuate) featuring Berlin artist Magdalena Wysocka\, in honor of the New York book publication party for The Downtown Luminaries by Robert Carrithers (Pogo Books\,Berlin) \nThe book is a compendium of Carrithers’ photographs of 1980’s New York and the cultural luminaries who continue to shape our consciousness. It was a time of enormous creativity and decay\, when anything was possible on the streets\, in the tenements\, and in brilliant nightclubs. One-night art shows\, wild theme parties\, nightlife and musical happenings of every kind reigned supreme\, in a spirit of collaboration and community. Long gone but not forgotten\, in these vibrant images of New York Carrithers captures the spirit of the times. The author will sign books and present a slide show and commentary about the journey from then to now. \nExperience a Club 57 happening! Carrithers is joined by Ammo\, aka Shawn McQuate the Great\, infamous for creating unique happenings at Club 57 from 1979 to 1982. Participants include former Club 57 members\, surprise guests\, and audience members! \nA happening is all about chance\, the unexpected\, and surprise. Planned by Ammo\, the outcome of his Universal Interaction happenings is unknown—constantly changing\, funny\, entertaining\, and thought-provoking. Inspired by the city and the noise; humanity; and moments of joy\, hilarity\, and tragedy; the event is participatory\, chaotic\, unpredictable…just like life in the Big Apple. \nClub 57 alum DJ Dany Johnson provides the sound effects and music\, and the audience is the star.

SUMMARY:Burroughs: The Movie
DESCRIPTION:A screening of Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary from The Criterion Collection\nMade up of intimate\, revelatory footage of the singular author and poet—filmed over the course of five years—Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary about William S. Burroughs was for decades mainly the stuff of legend. That changed when Aaron Brookner\, the late director’s nephew\, discovered a print of it in 2011 and spearheaded a restoration. Now viewers can enjoy the invigorating candidness of Burroughs: The Movie\, a one-of-a-kind nonfiction portrait that was brought to life with the help of a remarkable crew of friends\, including Jim Jarmusch and Tom DiCillo. The film features on-screen appearances by artist friends of Burroughs including Allen Ginsberg\, Herbert Huncke\, Patti Smith\, and Terry Southern. \nNovelist Stewart Meyer\, a protégé of William S. Burroughs\, will read from his classic Lotus Crew – tales from the early 80’s heroin street trade on the Lower East Side – accompanied by the photographer / filmmaker David Schmidlapp’s projections.

SUMMARY:Eszter Balint & Stew I Hate Memory
DESCRIPTION:A musical journey through the winsome past of Eszter Balint\nThursday\, April 19\, 2018 / 7 PM / Free\nFriday\, May 18\, 2018 / 7 PM / Free\nFriday\, June 22\, 2018 / 7 PM / Free \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present an evening of songs and stories called I Hate Memory! A wistful travelogue of the winsome past of EB\, which brings together two legendary downtown creators\, Eszter Balint (The Star) and Stew (The Director). Featuring an anti-cabaret which co-stars the Streets of New York and the Late 20th Century\, and which features appearances by family\, film and fame\, immigration\, joy\, theater and shame\, dance floors\, open doors\, avant-garde life\, papaya ice cream and the Shah of Iran’s wife. A reluctant memoir served on bed of song and dirt\, with a punk aperitif and Jimmy Carter for dessert. \nEszter sings and plays guitar and violin\, while Stew does the quieter singing and plays guitar\, with Vincent Sperrazza on drums and Kato Hideki on bass. \nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nMemory’s a predator \nEszter Balint is a singer-songwriter with three critically-acclaimed solo albums. She grew up as a member of the legendary avant-garde theater company Squat Theatre. She’s had featured roles in films by Jim Jarmusch\, Woody Allen\, and Steve Buscemi—including a role alongside David Bowie—and has recently starred in a six-episode arc in Season 4 of Louis CK’s TV show Louie. Jon Pareles of The New York Times has said of her work: “Miss Balint has her own film noir sensibility as a songwriter. She slips inside her characters to project their restlessness and longing.” \nSinger-songwriter Stew is a founding member of the band The Negro Problem\, and a Tony and Obie award-winning playwright and composer (Passing Strange).

SUMMARY:Felice Rosser and Faith\, with Luc Sante
DESCRIPTION:Concert and Reading \nSinger\, songwriter\, bass player\, actor\, and writer Felice Rosser is joined by Luc Sante for an evening of music and spoken word \nWith sweet and powerful guitars and funky polyrhythms\, Faith has developed an immensely colorful sound…tunes that are not rock\, not funk\, not R&B\, so much as deeply soulful tone poems… —Village Voice \nDetroit-bred\, New York City-based songstress Felice Rosser plays dub and soul. Rosser’s voice is dark and smooth like molasses. She’s also a wicked bass player. Carol Cooper of the Village Voice has said\, “Bands run by women typically exude distinctive moods and ‘tudes\, but none more subtly compelling than the Delphic aura given off by the tall and tan young lovely who straps on her ax to deliver tunes that are not rock\, not funk\, not R&B\, so much as deeply soulful tone poems backed by multiculti dream pop.” Rosser’s group Faith NYC has three well-received albums\, and tonight Rosser is joined by guitarist Naotaka Hakamada\, and drummer Paddy Boom (ex-Scissor Sisters)\, in a rare\, unplugged performance. \nRosser is featured in Sara Driver’s film Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean Michel Basquiat and has appeared in films by Jim Jarmusch\, Vivienne Dick\, Betty Gordon\, and Lizzie Borden. She has essays in Basquiat before Basquiat: East 12th Street 1979-1980\, published by MCA Denver Press; the soon-to-be-published PIL Story by Martin Atkins; BOMB Magazine; and Luc Sante’s Stranded magazine. \nIf New York celebrates amnesia\, perpetual transformation\, accelerated obsolescence—and offers newcomers a blank slate\, a chance to be born again—then Sante offers a mordantly heretical vision of the city. —The Guardian \nLuc Sante’s books include Low Life\, Evidence\, The Factory of Facts\, Kill All Your Darlings\, and The Other Paris \n.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Show with Rani O'Brien
DESCRIPTION:A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAMMACHINE \nby Rani O’Brien \nBroken to pieces from the classic comic tale by Shakespeare\, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAMMACHINE is the story of life in the dystopian 2019 Verona – or Athens – or Gilead – or America\, depending on how you look at it. We follow virile teenager Helena Baker as she navigates her place in (and out) of this world\, the mechanicals as they put on the play “Alien Comic and Luna Macaroona\,” and watch as the king and the queen of this dystopian dream land fight over ballot codes. Taking broken inspiration from Hamletmachine\, SEAGULLMACHINE\, pop idols\, Shakespeare tragedies\, dystopian TV shows\, and Tom Murrin\, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAMMACHINE asks: Can we love and live in the face of manipulation? Will off off off off off (times infinity) Broadway productions ever be taken seriously? Can a can of Campbell’s tomato soup save the world? \nDirected and written by Rani O’Brien \nFeaturing Saturday Lawson\, Julia Mack\, Laura Menzie\, Adam Munoz\, Fenny Novyane\, Danielle Ruth and Alejandro Valeriano de la Sen

SUMMARY:Michael Holman: An Evening of Films & Discussion with David Hershkovits
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is pleased to present a screening of Michael Holman’s short art films and a discussion with David Hershkovits as part of the exhibition Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat\, which looks at the Downtown and East Village scenes where the young artist left his indelible mark. The films attest to the important role Holman played in shaping the look\, sound\, and flavor of the early 80s downtown art scene in New York City. Stilwende—or\, a changing wind or time in German—is a short film that captures construction workers as they gut the Tribeca club Tier III and transform it into a Bauhaus-inspired\, minimalistic club called Stilwende. \nHolman’s Catch a Beat was the first hip hop film ever made. Finished in 1981\, it aired at The Ritz on East 11th Street as an opening act for the Zulu Nation Throwdown (DJ Afrika Bambaataa\, DJ Jazzy Jay\, the Rock Steady Crew\, and MC Ikey Cee) who were themselves the opening act for the evening’s headliner\, Bow Wow Wow. \nHolman will also screen his 1987 Paulette Goddard Award-winning short film Heads\, You Win\, starring Coati Mundi (of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole and the Coconuts) and Suzanne Mallouk (co-author of the novel Widow Basquiat). Another Vincent Gallo\, Michael Holman\, and Suzanne Mallouk collaboration is the short film Vampire LeStat\, an exploration into horror. \nAlso included in the screening are Holman’s never-broadcasted experimental TV commercials\, which he calls his “ignorant ads.” Holman uses his own source footage\, combining it with random real-and-existing corporate logos to create absurdist versions of TV ads. \nOne of the most important films to be shown will be The Subjective Gaze\, created by Holman to be screened during his debut MoMA live performance The Subjective Gaze\, Parts 1 & 2. \nThe films will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Holman and David Hershkovits about Holman’s work\, the environment—time and place—of the early 80s\, the Downtown scene\, and the direction of the cultural climate today. \n  \nAbout David Hershkovits \nAfter moving back to New York City in 1977\, David Hershkovits embedded himself in the downtown scene as a writer and editor of the Soho Weekly News. In 1984\, he was a founder of Paper magazine where he served as publisher and editor-in-chief for the next 33 years. \nIn 1982 he was the only reporter on the New York City rap tour that introduced hip hop culture to France and England. He was on the bus along with iconic figures of today that included Afrika Bambaataa\, DST\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Dondi\, Futura\, Ramellzee\, Phase 2\, The Rock Steady Crew with Crazy Legs and the Double Dutch Girls. \nHe is the host of the forthcoming Howlarts podcast “In the Beginning…” And an adjunct professor at CUNY/Queens College where he is teaching a graduate class on the role of media in the evolution of 70s\, 80s and 90s counterculture in New York City. \n  \nAbout Michael Holman \nA New York resident since 1978\, Michael Holman has been a creative and cultural force within\, as well as ambassador of this great city for 40 years. \nAs an artist and social observer\, back in the early 80s\, Holman captured unforgettable moments on film and video of a powerful new subculture called hip hop. As a true hip hop pioneer\, Holman worked diligently through his numerous published writings\, interviews\, film and television productions\, and public events to propel the culture onto the global stage and was the first writer to officially use the term hip hop in a publication (East Village Eye\, January 1982). \nHolman was responsible for organizing and personally managing two of the most popular hip hop dance crews in history—the Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers. Among many other accomplishments in hip hop culture\, Holman created\, produced\, and hosted Graffiti Rock (starring Run DMC and Kool Moe Dee)\, the first nationally-syndicated hip hop television show. \nHolman\, along with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat\, formed the experimental band Gray\, producing layered avant-garde music in combination with performance art and living\, sonic sculpture. Gray performed at legendary nightclubs such as CBGB\, Hurrah\, Club USA\, Tier III\, and The Mudd Club in the early 80s. Recent performances include shows at (Le) Poisson Rouge\, Brooklyn Academy of Music (with Questlove of The Roots)\, Corcoran Gallery of Art\, and the New Museum. \nThe film Gray\, Live at the New Museum was shown at Art Basel Miami Beach; at the opening of the new Parrish Museum building in Water Mill\, Long Island; and at the International Beethoven Festival in Chicago. \nAs a visual artist\, Holman has exhibited his paintings and fine art videos in important group shows such as the Spring/Break Art Show (in 2015 and 2017). In 2018\, a solo show of his paintings was exhibited at the Massey Klein Gallery in New York City. \nAs a performance artist\, Holman presented Confessions of a Subculturalist at the Bruno Walter Auditorium of The New York Public Library Jerome Robbins Dance Division (2017)\, and The Subjective Gaze at MoMA (2018). \nAs a filmmaker\, Holman wrote the screenplay to Miramax’s Julian Schnabel feature film Basquiat; wrote\, produced\, and directed children’s programming for Nickelodeon\, including the Ace Award-winning Blue’s Clues and Eureeka’s Kastle; produced and directed numerous award-winning MTV music videos; and taught screenwriting and filmmaking at Howard University\, The New School for Social Research\, the School of Visual Arts\, City College of New York and other institutions of higher learning.

SUMMARY:Al Diaz and Brett De Palma: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting the work of an early street art pioneer—whose adventures with Jean Michel Basquiat gave birth to graffiti’s iconic symbol SAMO©—Howl! Happening is pleased to present Al Diaz in conversation with downtown artist and luminary Brett De Palma\, both of whom are featured in Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat. \nSAMO© initially became known because of its wit and sarcastic humor\, becoming a globally recognized graffito after Basquiat’s rise to fame. \nA prolific and influential first-generation New York City subway graffiti artist who later became a text-oriented street artist\, Al Diaz’s career spans five decades. He currently works with WET PAINT signs used throughout the New York City subway system. After cutting out individual letters to create clever\, surreal\, and sometimes poignant anagrams\, he hangs the finished works in subways stations. His WET PAINT work was featured in the 21st Precinct: Street Art & Graffiti Art Show (July 2014) and in a solo show at Outlaw Arts (March 2015). The upcoming book Street Messages by Nicholas Ganz will include the artist’s work. \nHe has been a featured speaker in a variety of panel discussions at The New School\, the Museum of the City of New York\, the NOLA Arts Festival in New Orleans\, and other venues. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Al Diaz \nAl Diaz is best known for his collaboration with Jean Michel Basquiat on SAMO©\, graffiti that appeared in lower Manhattan from 1977 to 1979. SUMMARY:Allen Ginsberg Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Performances and a Group Reading of Howl! \nSunday\, June 3\, 2018 / 2-6 PM \nEverything is holy! everybody’s holy! everywhere is holy! everyday is in eternity! Everyman’s an angel! —Allen Ginsberg \nAn annual event since the Howl! Festival began way back in 2003\, Howl! Happening is pleased to continue the tradition of performances and the reading of “Howl” to celebrate our namesake’s birthday. We are inspired by the late poet-philosopher—a lifelong spokesperson for peace\, justice\, and freedom of expression—and like Allen\, we are not afraid to speak up and support artists and audiences by providing a forum to join in the creative process and make their voices heard. \nThis year\, artists\, poets\, musicians\, and nutty creators of all stripes join together to salute our hero. Bob Rosenthal\, Ginsberg’s “right hand man\,” will act as master of ceremonies\, and David Amram\, Ed Sanders\, Hettie Jones\, Eileen Myles\, Peter Hale\, poet Simon Pettet\, Caiti\, Heather Litteer\, and Nikhil Melnechuk will be performing. A short film with highlights from Beat & Beyond: A Gathering\, the six-day festival held in 2016\, honors the poets\, musicians\, bookstores\, and significant individuals whose energy transformed America forever. \nEverybody’s serious but me. —Allen Ginsberg \nThe evening culminates with the annual group reading of “Howl”. Get the down beat and be ready to vocalize your own angst\, joy\, activism\, and solidarity with the madness to create a more just and humane world! \nI saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness\, starving hysterical naked\,  dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix\,  angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night…. —Allen Ginsberg

SUMMARY:Paul Tschinkel's New York New Wave at P.S. 1 The Armory Show of the 80s
DESCRIPTION:A Film by Paul Tschinkel with Text and Interviews by Marc H. Miller\nScreening and Discussion with Tschinkel\, Miller\, and Curt Hoppe\nIn 1981\, Diego Cortez organized New York/New Wave\, a large exhibition at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center\, the legendary alternative art space in Long Island City. A hybrid of art\, photography\, music\, and fashion\, the exhibition captured the pulse of a new avant-garde art and music scene and\, in retrospect\, marked an important moment of generational change in the art world. Cortez pulled many of the exhibition’s nearly 100 artists from the fringes of the city’s exploding music and nightclub scene. Many of the artists in the P.S. 1 exhibition—Keith Haring\, Jean-Michel Basquiat (then billed as “Samo”)\, Marcia Resnick\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, Futura 2000\, Nan Goldin—have since become household names. \n  \nThis video program\, a part of Paul Tschinkel’s long-running educational art series ART/new york\, now stands as the most complete record of a seminal exhibition that was widely reviewed at the time but did not have a catalog. Last summer\, the tape was continuously screened as part of the PS1 exhibition A Bit of Matter: The MoMA PS1 Archives\, 1976-2000\, and last fall an edited excerpt of the tape was featured in the exhibition Basquiat: Boom for Real at the Barbican Art Gallery in London\, England. \n  \nAlong with installation footage of the exhibition and an informed narrative\, the tape includes footage of the “no wave” music group DNA and interviews with painter Curt Hoppe (whose X-rated political cartoons from Screw magazine were exhibition highlights) and curator Cortez (who describes the show as a “sociology of elements that make up a scene”).  Following the screening at Howl!\, Paul Tschinkel\, Marc H. Miller\, Curt Hoppe\, and others who participated in New York/New Wave will discuss the exhibition and video. \n

SUMMARY:Catalyst Quartet - CQ@Howl!
DESCRIPTION:Turbulent\, wildly colorful and exploding with life\, Strum sounded like a handful of American folk melodies tossed into a strong wind\, cascading and tumbling joyfully around one another.\n—Jessie Montgomery album review\, The Washington Post \nAs part of the ongoing performance series\, Catalyst Quartet—CQ@Howl! brings to life the reciprocal connection and common mission between Howl! Happening and Jessie Montgomery’s music to explore the intersections of art\, music\, performance\, social justice\, immigrants\, equality\, and community activism. \nThis evening will feature a performance by Jessie Montgomery’s duo\, Big Dog Little Dog. \nJessie Montgomery is a violinist\, composer and music educator from New York City.  She performs and gives workshops in the US and abroad and her compositions are being performed by orchestras and chamber groups throughout the country. \nJessie was born and raised in Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 1980s during a time when the neighborhood was at a major turning point in its history.  Artists gravitated there and it was a hotbed of cultural activity and community development.  Her parents (father a musician\, her mother\, an actress) were engaged in the activities of the neighborhood and regularly brought Jessie to rallies\, performances and parties where neighbors\, activists and artists gathered to celebrate and support the movements of the time. It is from this unique experience that Jessie has created a life in which performance\, creativity\, education and advocacy merge. \nAbout The Catalyst Quartet  \nAbout Jessie Montgomery \n

SUMMARY:Zeitgeist Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Alexis Adler\, Felice Rosser\, Lee Quiñones\, Al Diaz\, Sara Driver and David Hershkovits\nZeitgeist’s key event is a lively discussion about the times and artists in the exhibition. First-hand\, and up close and personal\, our panel of artists was in the midst of the development of a scene that has produced some of the most influential creators of our time. These artists present an unvarnished “realness” characteristic of the times—intersecting with the public’s avid interest it has pushed whole new generations to appreciate (and long for) that lost\, raw and anarchically free era. \nArtwork: Fight Tyranny In All Forms by Walter Robinson \n

SUMMARY:Kestutis Nakas When Lithuania Ruled the World
DESCRIPTION:Part of the annual Writers Block Festival of Staged Readings and Performances to Benefit the Actors Fund\nHowl! Happening is pleased to present When Lithuania Ruled the World—a play cycle in four parts by Kestutis Nakas. Featuring a cast of East Village performance veterans including John Kelly and Edgar Oliver\, this is the first time the play cycle has been presented in its entirety. The event marks the centennial year of independence for modern Lithuania. When Lithuania Ruled the World traces the rise of the medieval Lithuanian Empire\, invoking the myths\, legends\, and worldview of Europe’s last pagans. By turns tragic\, comic\, ridiculous\, romantic\, and grotesque\, the play tells story of a dynasty that forged a tolerant\, polyglot\, multicultural empire while resisting conquest and forced Christianization by crusading Teutonic knights. \nWritten in Nakas’ trademark “iambic funtameter” style\, this sprawling work was first presented in New York’s East Village at the Pyramid Club\, La MaMa\, and Anthology Film Archives in the 80s and early 90s. \nPart One: Thursday\, June 14\, 2018 / 7 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part I \nPart Two: Friday\, June 15\, 2018 / 7 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part II \nPart Three: Sunday\, June 17\, 2018 / 2 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part III \nPart Four: Sunday\, June 17\, 2018 / 6 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part IV \nAll of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit Howl! HELP and the Actors Fund. \n About WRITERS BLOCK 2018 \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present the annual Writers Block 2018 Festival. Created to showcase the vision of contemporary writers\, performers\, and artists—many of whom got their start in the nightclubs\, seminal performance spaces\, and theaters associated with the East Village and Lower East Side—the festival showcases some of the most important playwrights and performers in theater today. New works in progress are presented at this intimate\, ultimate downtown theatrical event. Writers Block 2018 runs throughout the year with a week of short plays and one-acts in the fall and various blocks of full-length plays over the year. \nThe festival is a benefit for the Howl! Emergency Life Project (Howl! HELP)\, which provides emergency financial assistance and social service support to artists who have made or continue to make their careers in New York’s East Village and Lower East Side arts communities.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Show
DESCRIPTION:Every Month on The Full Moon\n4pm Sharp\n  \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of the late Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. When dateless and unbooked\, he’d perform on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nTom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. From the mid 80’s on\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement / Creative Learning\, supported by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. SUMMARY:W.O.(e).R.D: Woman of Experience Read Downtown
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is delighted to present Heather Litteer’s reading series W.O.(e).R.D Women of Experience Read Downtown featuring Ada Calhoun\, Pamela Sneed\, Chi Chi Valenti\, and Jo Weldon. \nLitteer started the series more than a decade ago to highlight women that walk a bit off the beaten path and color outside the lines—“my sisters with a downtown state of mind…rebels\, revolutionaries and rock stars!\,” as Litteer describes them. \nBringing together women from all disciplines in the arts to explore new ideas\, read out loud\, and let the inside animal out\, Litteer has cultivated a safe environment for expression\, risk taking\, and literary freedom from societal restraints. \n“It’s a place of no judgment\,” says Litteer\, “where women from diverse threads in the culture can meet and speak to each other and where they are free to voice their lived experience.” \nEven more relevant today than when she began the series\, W.O.(e).R.D started within the Antagonist Art Movement reading series in 2007\, curated by Ethan Minsker of Psycho Moto Zine. In 2010\, it migrated to Wild Project\, where Jo Weldon and Litteer collaborated on hosting and curatorial duties. Heather is part of the HOWL! Happening family\, and we are happy to showcase the series this summer. READ OUT LOUD! \nHeather is the W.O.(e).R.D Woman of Experience Read Downtown creatrix\, curator\, and host. \nAbout Heather Litteer\nHeather Litteer is an actress and has been a vital member of the downtown performance\, alternative cabaret\, and indie film scene. She is the recipient of the 2017 HOWL! Arts Fellowship\, and The William and Eva Fox Foundation and Theatre Communications Group Fox Fellowship in conjunction with La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. She wrote and premiered her one woman show Lemonade at La MaMa. Lemonade went on to the Afterglow Festival in Provincetown\, Special Effects Festival in New York City\, and 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This summer\, the show will be presented at the Playmill 18 festival in London. Litteer is a member of Caden Manson’s critically-acclaimed Big Art Group and of the legendary arthouse performance nightclub The Jackie Factory. She is the producer of W.O.(e).R.D Woman Of Experience Reads Downtown. \nAbout Chi Chi Valenti\nChi Chi Valenti has spent over three decades shaping and chronicling New York City’s nightclub demimonde. SUMMARY:Zhe Zhe Season 2 Episode 4: Semper Fidelity
DESCRIPTION:THE SURREAL SATIRICAL CULT WEB SERIES IS BACK \nJoin Howl! Happening: an Arturo Vega Project as we screen Zhe Zhe Season 2\, Episode 4 starting 7pm.\nA hilarious satirical web series about the glamorous misadventures of three fame-famished posers in a post-reality New York\, Zhe Zhe\, created by Ruby McCollister\, Leah Hennessey\, Emily Allan and director E.J. O’Hara\, offers an unflinching look at the dystopia that has become our reality. The first season of Zhe Zhe foresaw the mainstreaming of wingnut conspiracy culture and commodification of political protest. \nIn this latest episode\, “Semper Fidelity”\, hijinks ensue when Mona DeLiza enrolls at a prestigious liberal arts college and angsty androgyne Jean D’Arc opens a record store. \n“Rude and ‘hashtag problematic’. You’ve probably never seen anything like it.” – Mask Magazine \n\n
