SUMMARY:Masao Gozu Time Frame
DESCRIPTION:Opening Party: Friday\, October 13th\, 6pm\nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Time Frame\, a selection of sculptures and photographs by artist Masao Gozu. Born in Japan in 1946\, Gozu moved to New York in 1970 to attend the Brooklyn Museum Art School\, where he began an artistic practice of structuring a body of work over time that literally “frames” the people and architecture of downtown New York. \nFrom 1971–1990\, Gozu single-mindedly photographed New York City residents in their tenement apartment windows. An unsung gem of urban documentary\, the Windows series is evocative of the work of Robert Frank\, Berenice Abbott\, and Garry Winogrand in its penetrating look at a segment of American culture\, specifically portraits of the denizens of the Lower East Side. \nActively soliciting attention or simply captured musing in the frame\, his subjects are the focus of his humanist exploration. The architecture of the building facades gives these portraits a carefully considered perspective and compositional harmony. As Gozu says\, “For me the window is a mirror\, a mirror in which I see myself through time.” \nSo interested has Gozu been in the material and spatial qualities of these windows\, that he went on to produce large scale sculptural representations of them—many on view at the gallery. An evolving aspect of the same aesthetic as the Windows series\, he has taken the idea one step further\, making full-size windows themselves the subject of a series. These monumental sculptures are created from the brick facades and window frames of demolished buildings. Bringing the city’s vanishing neighborhoods into the gallery\, this scavenged and reconstituted detritus spotlights the site-specific nature of his work. \nSerial imagery\, time\, and spatial exploration are at the core of Gozu’s aesthetic—a common link in his commentary on life in the city. His Harry’s Bar photographs are like a time lapse “moving picture\,” tracing the fluorescence and decay of one specific neighborhood landmark. Through serial images of the front window\, we watch the passage of time—plants appear and then die; barflies come and go; an improvised attempt to change Harry’s to Harold’s signals a change in ownership; and a “Going Out of Business” sign\, the bar’s demise\, is the final visual echo\, concluding the story of one place that stands in for the loss and gentrification of the city. \nAbout Masao Gozu \nMasao Gozu was born in Nagano\, Japan in 1946. He graduated from the Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1970. In 1971\, he was awarded the Max Beckmann scholarship to the Brooklyn Museum Art School\, where he studied from 1971–1973. In 1990\, he won the special Jury Prize at Le Mois de Photo in Paris.                                                                         Masao Gozu’s work has been displayed internationally from New York to Paris and Japan\, including shows at the legendary SoHo gallery OK Harris. His work is included in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Margulies Collection\, and Lowe Art Museum\, in Miami; the Musée National d’Art Moderne in the Centre Pompidou\, Paris; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. He lives in the East Village\, New York City. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Queer Butoh 2017
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening in association with The New York Butoh Institute and Vangeline Theater presents Queer Butoh 2017\, a free three-hour evening of site-specific Butoh performances with three LGBT/Q Butoh artists from San Francisco\, Chicago and New York: Angela Newsham\, Holly Chernobyl\, and Will Atkins. The event will take place on Thursday\, October 19\, 2017 at Howl! Happening\, 6 E. First Street\, NYC. For more information\, visit www.vangeline.com. \nFree Admission \nThe artists will dance throughout the evening yet maintain a fluid space of interaction with the audience. The unique minimalist soundscape featured includes recordings of the artists in candid conversations about the role\, which butoh has played in their lives. The installation will take place against the unique background of sculptures by Japanese artist Mazao Gozu. \n“Butoh is essentially the dance of the marginalized\, and the LGBTQ population is still largely marginalized in the world\,” says Vangeline France\, curator of this series. “Most of these artists feel that they found a place of freedom and acceptance through Butoh and it was important to give them a voice to express this.” \nIn Butoh\, the desire to play with notions of both “masculine” and “feminine” has been expressed in performance methodology by both male and female artists. The five contemporary artists will create new work and speak about how they integrate Butoh into their art and lives. \nAt its origin\, the introduction of Butoh in Japan was widely controversial. The first Butoh performance\, Kinjiki (Forbidden Colors) created by Tatsumi Hijikata in 1958\, shocked its spectators. Inspired by the work of homosexual author Jean Genet\, Kinjiki took its name and inspiration from Yukio Mishima’s book Forbidden Color and dealt with homosexuality\, a profoundly taboo subject at the time. \nHolly Chernobyl has been a working artist for over a decade–her work spanning poetry\, storytelling\, bunraku puppetry\, physical theater\, and performance art. She has presented work in many Chicago spaces\, including the Japanese Cultural Center. Her work has also been performed in Seattle\, Brooklyn\, Finland\, Germany\, the UK\, and shown in Boston\, Quebec and Brazil. She continues to create solo pieces and collaborate with a talented array of international artists\, through her dance theater company\, NIGHTPARADE. Recently\, she was awarded a grant through the Finlandia Foundation\, and a 2 month residency in Berlin-based Altes Finanzamt Atelier. \nBorn and raised on the island of Oahu\, Angela Newsham developed a deep connection with nature. As a non-verbal learner she pays close attention to movement and creates art as a way to express her inquiries and connect with others. She is inspired by her work as a raptor rehabilitator in Oregon nurturing injured and orphaned birds of prey. She has trained extensively in Body Mind Centering with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen and Sonja Riket\, and in Butoh with Vangeline Theater in New York and San Francisco\, Diego Pinon as well as Natsu Nakajima and Atsushi Takenouchi. She incorporates her voice in her work influenced by the Hawaiian chanting she grew up with and the traditional training in classical\, Middle Eastern and Balkan techniques. \nWill Atkins – A graduate of Hofstra University’s B.F.A of Performing Arts\, Will’s body of work is heavily influenced by his study in movement art forms\, especially Butoh. While at school\, Will received High Honors for his senior thesis exploring the paradoxical and transformation elements in Butoh. He studies regularly with the New York Butoh Institute and has produced and assisted on several Vangeline Theater projects. Will has performed in movement based shows around the city\, creating solo works and masks for WalkUpArts’ productions\, collaborating with local costume artists\, and more recently performed in Esperanza Spalding’s Virgin Writes earlier this year. \nThe Vangeline Theater has been a leader in the development of contemporary Butoh dance since its founding in 2002. Informed by the expansive vision of pioneering choreographer Vangeline\, the Vangeline Theater brings to life a timeless and uniquely American style of Butoh that continues to captivate audiences. The Vangeline Theater is home to the New York Butoh Institute\, providing superior Butoh training to our community. The New York Butoh Institute is dedicated to the advancement of Butoh in the 21st century\, with a special emphasis on scientific research as it relates to Butoh. www.vangeline.com

SUMMARY:Rick Berlin Songs with Subtitles
DESCRIPTION:Cabaret Performance and Reading\nHowl! Happening is thrilled to present a true original—Rick Berlin—reading and playing from his first book\, The Paragraphs\, published by Cutlass Press. Created from fragments used to write songs\, this memoir recalls a musical life told in bursts of wild inspiration. \n“A memoir? I guess that’s the right word\,” says Berlin. “It’s a nod to my family in some way\, but that wasn’t intentional. I’ve been writing stuff for a long\, long time. Now I guess people who think I’m weird will understand why.” \nRick Berlin\, the queer Boston music legend—former frontman of Orchestra Luna\, Berlin Airlift\, Rick Berlin: The Movie\, and The Shelley Winters Project\, and current helm of The Nickel & Dime Band—is known for his zany lyrics and unflinching wit. An integral part of the original CBGBs scene of the 70s and 80s\, Berlin will read paragraphs from his book and play related songs accompanied by solo piano. Each song references one of the paragraphs in the book. “The result can be hilarious\, disturbing\, blunt\, and particularly unflattering to myself. But it’s always honest.” \nRick Berlin is a giant on the Boston music scene. His colorful songwriting and strong stage presence have influenced countless other artists since the early 70s\, when his innovative band Orchestra Luna harnessed a potent blend of theater and music\, years before The Tubes. Throughout the decades and shifting fortunes of the business\, Rick has continued to make music with intelligence and integrity\, building an international reputation around his knotty\, singular piano playing\, straight from the heart singing\, and a style of character-based songwriting that’s drawn favorable comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen…. —The Boston Phoenix

Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nPhoto copyright Eric McNatt 2016

SUMMARY:Tessie Chua The Shame of Disco
DESCRIPTION:Performance and Video Screening\nfeaturing Animal X\nComedienne and performance luminary Tessie Chua brings her hilarious take on living in the East Village during the late 70s—its grungiest heyday\, when sharing your apartment with cockroaches was the norm—in this commentary on culture and the times. There’s mohawks\, blazing colored hair\, leather and bondage clothes\, and Roxy\, a very opinionated cockroach with gourmet tastes. No bodega! Yes\, Dean & Deluca! Roxy’s been through the Roach Potential Movement and learned meditation at the Dalai Lama’s knee. As part of the post-punk community\, Tessie and Roxy both vocalized the movement’s collective hatred for disco. \n“I really wasn’t sure why everyone hated disco. Roxy and I liked PIL\, but we also liked disco. I’d be mortified when my friend Animal X or two-thirds of Mission of Burma would go through my record collection and see that it contained Donna Summer\, and worse yet\, Patrick Juvet\,” says Chua. The New Wave Vaudeville Show\, meth and heroin addicts\, Keith Haring\, Club 57\, CBGB and Danceteria\, loser bands\, Manic Panic\, and John Sex’s apartment all are observed through Roxy’s jaundiced and satiric eye. \nThe evening will also feature\, Android X\, a performance by Animal X\, the Ultra Punk fashion designer from the 70’s and 80’s in the East Village.  Her Shows were known for her wild fashion shows that included punk  celebrities\, porn stars and other surprises. The performance will feature a film by Marty Abrahams and animation by Marjan Moghadon \nAlso on view is the short video The Scary Truth About Cockroaches and Landlords which is included in Club 57: Film\, Performance\, and Art in the East Village\, 1978–1983 at the Museum of Modern Art. \nAbout Tessie Chua \nBorn and raised in San Francisco\, California\, home to beatniks and hippies\, she studied art at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Art Institute. A teenager during the Summer of Love\, she remarks: “People walked down the street happily greeting each other\, ‘Have a nice day!’ I moved to New York in 1974\, people answered back\, ‘Fuck You!’” In New York\, she performed with the New Wave Vaudeville Show that put her smack in the middle of the post-punk Community. The show was an opportunity to write her first comedy sketch—In the Name of God—casting herself as a sadistic nun who accidently beats a schoolgirl to death for taking the name of God in vain one too many times. More opportunities followed at Club 57\, Mudd Club and other downtown clubs. \nIn 2015\, she started working on an ongoing solo performance about her life in the East Village\, spurred in part by meeting young comics who said\, “That must have been a romantic era to have lived through.”  “Romantic? I would call it gritty\,” she says. \nAbout Android X \nAnimal X explores the possibilities of a future when we will be ghosts in the machine\, our minds downloaded into robots. Featuring a film of her work by Martin Abrams and inspired by her participation in the Club 57 exhibit at the MoMA\, and Drawing on her early career\, this multimedia performance combines video\, puppetry and costume. Animal X is an award-winning performance and multidisciplinary artist whose work spans four decades\, including nightclub appearances\, Art Gallery installations\,  theater Productions\, NEA fellowship\, appearing at wild and crazy music festivals\, as well touring the country with her theatrical company “I Believe in Fairies Productions”. SUMMARY:Merrill Aldighieri V.J. Diaries
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere Screening \nHowl! Happening is pleased to present the premiere of Merrill Aldighieri’s new film\, “V.J. Diaries”\, tracing the birth of the video jockey or “VJ.” The film is the story of Aldighieri and her pioneering work creating an improvised live video feed to interpret the DJ’s music at the legendary club Hurrah—a hotbed of creativity. “V.J. Diaries” looks at her role amplifying the connection between music and imagery in nightclubs. Her historic filming of the live performances of punk\, new wave\, jazz and industrial music form a diary marking her time at this seminal club. Guest DJ Bill Bahlman\, who worked alongside Aldighieri at Hurrah\, provides his inimitable ambiance to this HOWL! Happening. \nMore than 200 hours of live music performances were recorded by Aldighieri during a year at Hurrah (1980-1981). Excerpts from 30 different live shows include legendary bands like New Order\, Mission of Burma\, Magazine\, Gang of Four\, The Psychedelic Furs\, A Certain Ratio\, and Bush Tetras\, as well as interviews with Cynthia Sley\, Jim Fouratt\, Anita Sarko\, Dee Pop\, Ron Jagger\, Bill Laswell\, Jim Jarmusch\, Stephanie Kaye\, Alan Vega\, George Wrage and many more\, blended with rare archival footage and visually daring animation inspired by her nightly VJ improvisations. Projections of her scratch-animated loops will add to the atmosphere of the evening. \n“V.J. Diaries” brings to life the classic music performance archive Aldighieri created. Fans of the period will discover the music has not lost its freshness and fire. Mentored by nightclub impresario Jim Fouratt\, the rock critic/booking agent Ruth Polsky discovered and brought to the stage emerging talent featured in this film. That timeless sense of discovery is what “V.J. Diaries” is all about. This is a one-time screening so don’t miss it! \nWatch the trailer here!

SUMMARY:International Butoh: Panel Discussion and Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Cristina Elias\, Tetsuro Fukuhara and Vangeline\nHowl! Happening and New York Butoh Institute are pleased to present a symposium and panel discussion focused on International Butoh in the 21st century\, in conjunction with a series of live performances with Butoh Master Tetsuro Fukuhara (Tokyo\, Japan) and Vangeline. Sign language interpretation will be provided for this event. \nOver the past 60 years\, Butoh has become a universal and international movement language. Developed in post-World War II Japan\, the minimalist avant-garde dance form has grown\, evolved\, and traveled worldwide. Butoh is taught and performed across the United States; in Europe\, Africa\, and Latin America. While the form has its roots in Japan\, there are Butoh artists of all cultures\, backgrounds\, and ethnicities\, continuing its legacy into the 21st century. \nIn International Butoh: Collaboration and Symposium\, Butoh master artists Tetsuro Fukuhara and Vangeline will dive into the past\, present\, and future of Butoh as a permeable and boundary-blending art form that reaches across geographic and cultural divides. \nThe performances with Fukuhara and Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute premiere November 17–19\, 2017 at Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn. For more information on the symposium and performances visit Vangeline Theater. \nAbout the Artists \n Tetsuro Fukuhara\, president of Tokyo Space Dance\, is a second – generation movement artist of “Improvisation Butoh.” Tetsuro studied under Akira Kasai\, and Butoh founders Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata. At 68\, Tetsuro represents the oldest generation of Japanese Butoh. His style of “New Butoh Space Dance” is a way to socialize Butoh for the general public\, bringing together elements of dance\, architecture\, information\, and design. \n Vangeline is an internationally acclaimed French-born\, New York City-based Butoh choreographer and is regarded widely as an expert in her field in the United States. She is the founder of the New York Butoh Institute and artistic director of the Vangeline Theater\, an all-female dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese Butoh while carrying it into the 21st century. Vangeline’s socially conscious performances tie together Butoh and activism. Her performances have dealt with subjects as varied as feminism\, climate change\, war\, and perceptions of gender. \nTetsuro Fukuhara and Vangeline represent the second and third generations of Butoh\, a physical symbol of evolution—teacher to student\, man to woman\, past to future. For this collaboration\, the artists will work together to share their artmaking practices to create new work. \nAdditional Panelist:\nFrom Brazil\, Cristina Elias\, Artist\, choreographer \nCristina Elias’s work sets its focus on building bridges between different artistic codes. In 2013\, she was awarded the Prize “FUNARTE – Women in Visual Arts” (Ministry of Cultural\, Brazil) and\, in 2016\, the prize “Paço das Artes – Temporada de Projetos 2017” (Paço das Artes Museum\, São Paulo\, Brazil). Her work has already been exhibited at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) São Paulo\, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) São Paulo\, the MAXXI (Rome\, Italy)\, Radialsystem Berlin (Germany)\, Festival VERBO (Galeria Vermelho\, São Paulo\, Brazil) among others. SUMMARY:Brett De Palma Dreaming on the Bowery: Post-Apocalyptic Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, November 18 / 6 PM / Free\nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Dreaming on the Bowery\, a retrospective of paintings by New York artist Brett De Palma. A representative selection of his nimble\, allegorical\, and chaotic figuration\, the works include contemporary paintings that serve as canvas for De Palma’s commentary on the current political and cultural climate\, as well as works made over the course of the last 30 years—replete with satire\, farce\, and funky humor. \nThis exhibition features a dazzling group of large-scale paintings that display a willful reticence of refinement and a handmade\, playful style. Furious scuffles of paint spawning half-smothered epic-historical subject matter synthesize a crude\, rude\, rough around the edges American brashness. Living and working in the late 70s and 80s\, he was on the downtown scene\, pulling from his experience of iconic clubs and galleries where fashion elites\, artists\, and musicians convened. This same gritty\, decaying street scene in New York was the stage for luminous friends like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Keith Haring\, Kenny Scharf\, Julian Schnabel\, and David Salle. \nIn an early review in the New Yorker\, renowned critic Lisa Liebmann says\, “In paintings that show rare daring and a fond insubordination to painterly fashion that is healthier than mere disregard […] De Palma’s splendid\, crazed work is really wild at heart\, a lot wilder\, in fact\, than Fauve art.”\nA sharp yet playful humor and sardonic\, critical view of humankind is characteristic of De Palma’s personality and his approach to creating art—he describes his work as having no rules. As an artist\, his goal is to open possibilities rather than restrict freedom of style\, subject matter\, or technique. Through a synthesis of contradictory elements—hard edges and soft forms\, sensuality and roughness\, humor and darkness—De Palma’s art depicts the shifting quality of life in all its quirkiness. \n“For the artists who love their work and feel that it is meaningful\, productive efforts are a type of devotion\,” says De Palma. “My work flies in the face of fashion and demonstrates how the artist and poet must fight the gods of our society: the god of conformism\, as well as the gods of apathy\, material success\, and exploitative power.” \nWith each composition\, he aims to discover and express the depth of character and thought that springs from an authentic view of life\, untainted by commercial forces or the art market. In a world where the shrewd prosper and the hardworking innocents find themselves outside the system\, De Palma has resisted in solitary solidarity with his own vision—being alone\, keeping his distance\, maintaining the peace of mind necessary for listening to one’s deeper self. \nHerein lies the timeless fear that every society harbors about its artists. They are the ones who threaten the status quo that society is devoted to protecting. Such an artist is Brett De Palma. \nAbout Brett De Palma \nDe Palma worked at Sperone Westwater Fischer Gallery and was included in 1982’s Documenta 7\, curated by Dutch art historian Rudi Fuchs. He exhibited with Tony Shafrazi and Fawbush galleries. De Palma was the recipient of an NEA grant and has shown nationally and internationally. He taught advanced painting in the early 90s at Princeton and has been on the faculty of School of Visual Arts in New York for the past 28 years. From 1992 to 2005\, De Palma was also director of creative arts at VillageCare\, a Manhattan AIDS day treatment program. \n

SUMMARY:Joseph Keckler Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World: Portraits and Revelations
DESCRIPTION:Reading and Book Signing\nJoseph Keckler is a magician\, a vagabond of the outer boroughs with an eye for the unorthodox\, irregular\, anomalous\, and uncanny. By turns mordant and melancholy\, decadent and delirious\, these are stories to cherish\, as brilliant and charming as the writer himself. —Olivia Laing \nHowl! Happening is pleased to celebrate the publication of Joseph Keckler’s first book\, Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World\, with a reading and book signing. Reality\, embellishment\, and fantasy intermingle in 20 mesmerizing tales by the acclaimed performing artist. Published by Turtle Point Press. \nRanging between different periods of his life and written over the course of a decade\, these episodes confirm Keckler’s storytelling mastery. As we are led through corners of downtown New York and the Midwest\, we are introduced to his mentors and muses\, odd jobs and odder employers. What is it like to work for a blind man who runs an art gallery? Or for an aging club kid who administers a university classics department? Outré characters turn art into a religion and make a spectacle of daily life. Some strive to be center stage and others struggle to be seen\, but all soldier on in the margins. In this world\, you may board a familiar bus or train and find yourself in some shady netherworld\, or skipping past midnight on New Year’s Eve. There is sex with ghosts. And the incessant GPS voice that mocks the last moments of a longtime love. \nJoseph Keckler is a captivating raconteur\, with a delicious ability to transform scenes of dread into comedic triumph. His deadpan delivery contrasts brilliantly with his virtuoso appetite for moody glissandi and hectic staccati.  I marvel at the social incongruities—the faux pas\, the accidental couplings\, the identity slippages—that he narratively dishes out as if they were artisanal pizzas\, seasoned with a hilarity and drama that add up to box office boffo. \n—Wayne Koestenbaum \nAbout Joseph Keckler

SUMMARY:Basquiat: Rage to Riches
DESCRIPTION:A Documentary Film by David Shulman \nHowl! Happening and Brett De Palma are pleased to present a preview screening of the BBC production Basquiat: Rage to Riches\, by award-winning director David Shulman\, made in conjunction with the major retrospective Basquiat: Boom for Real currently on view at Barbican in London. \nThis screening is free and open to the public \nThe recent Sotheby’s auction of a Jean-Michel Basquiat Skull painting for over a hundred million dollars has catapulted this Brooklyn-born artist into the top tier of the international art market\, joining the ranks of Picasso\, de Kooning\, and Francis Bacon. This film tells Jean-Michel’s story through exclusive interviews with his two sisters Lisane and Jeanine\, who have never before agreed to be interviewed for a TV documentary. With striking candor\, Basquiat’s art dealers—including Larry Gagosian\, Mary Boone\, and Bruno Bischofberger—as well as his most intimate friends\, lovers\, and fellow artists\, expose the cash\, drugs\, and pernicious racism which Basquiat confronted on a daily basis. As historical tableaux\, visual diaries of defiance\, or surfaces covered with hidden meanings\, Basquiat’s art remains the beating heart of this story. \nphoto caption: Jean Michel Basquiat and Brett De Palma

SUMMARY:Celebrate Harry Smith with Raymond Foye
DESCRIPTION:NYC Premiere of Robert Frank’s Harry Smith Breslin Hotel NYC (1984)\nAnd the music of High Water\nRaymond Foye and Howl! Happening are pleased to present an evening celebrating the legendary filmmaker\, painter\, and folklorist Harry Smith. The event includes the New York premiere of Harry Smith Breslin Hotel NYC\, a short film by Robert Frank; a panel discussion; and a screening of Smith’s animated films with live music by High Water\, songwriter and saxophonist Will Epstein’s changing collective of electronic swing and improvised incantation. \nAlways on the verge of homelessness\, for eight years Smith occupied a tiny room in the Breslin\, a welfare hotel on Broadway and West 29th Street. Forced to move when the residence was sold and converted to a luxury hotel\, Robert Frank documented Smith packing his belongings and leaving his home for a Bowery shelter\, where he occupied a tiny steel wire mesh cubicle for several years before being rediscovered and rescued by Allen Ginsberg. \nThe short will be shown twice\, before and after a panel discussion featuring Raymond Foye and Charles Compo\, two friends who spent a great deal of time with Harry in his room at the Breslin Hotel. Although it was one of the most reclusive periods in Smith’s life\, it was also most productive. He saw very few people\, but edited his epic multi-screen magnum opus film No. 18: Mahagonny. He also compiled several recording projects (on the Kiowa\, and on shape-note singing) and returned to painting. \nThis program is produced in conjunction with Brett De Palma’s exhibition Dreaming on the Bowery: Post-Apocalyptic Paintings\, on view from November 18 through December 20\, 2017. \nPhoto of Harry Smith by Allen Ginsberg \n

SUMMARY:The Mayhem Moon
DESCRIPTION:A Stinkmetal and May Production\nIn homage to Tom Murrin’s Luna Macaroona Full Moon Shows\nProduction Director: Tony Stinkmetal\nFrom the luminous minds of the MAYHEM sisters Salley May and Nancy May Perry comes this skeleton key to the locks that keep you in and out. Performed by Agosto Machado\, Pedro J. Rosado\, Jr.\, Annie Lanzillotto\, Aru Hangar\, Simba Yangala\, Nina Ndjemba Elemva\, Salley May and Tony Stinkmetal. The Mayhem Moon will take place in the gallery at 7 PM (instead of the sidewalk shows at 4). \nYou know that dream? The one where you’re on a prison planet and the inmates only know one joke…\nThe one where an ICE agent\, a doctor\, and a scary clown walk into a bar and the bartender says\, “Why the long shadow?”\nThen come the birds. They’re crashing against the windows.\nYou open the window to let them out. They fly free.\nYou try to follow them but the bars are too close together.\nAnd you’re locked out.\nThe Mayhem Moon will punch that dream in the face.\nInsiders will be exiled\, inmates will take office\, jesters will ascend to the throne. \nMAYHEM is coming to the rescue. \n  \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin.

SUMMARY:Tomata du Plenty Coast to Coast
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition\, Panel Discussion\, and Screenings\nActor\, performer\, painter\, raconteur. Howl! Happening is pleased to present an evening celebrating the colorful coast-to-coast life of Tomata du Plenty. The show will include a one night only sale of Tomata’s watercolors from the collection of Chuck Fulton\, a slide show curated by Sandra Schulman\, and a panel discussion focusing on Tomata’s time in New York City. The panel will feature 70s era Off-Off-Broadway theater contemporaries Tish and Snooky of Manic Panic; Jack Rabid\, publisher of The Big Takeover\, who conducted one of the last interviews with Tomata; and Carlos Iglesias\, L.A. based collector and documentarian of the upcoming film on Tomata’s life. A slide show and a short film\, commissioned especially for the presentation\, will be shown. \nTomata du Plenty (1948 –2000)\, born David Xavier Harrigan\, was an artist in step with his times—careening from careers as a theater troupe founder and experimental punk band performer to multimedia artist. Born in New York and raised in California\, Tomata seized the day in San Francisco\, where he joined the Cockettes\, the legendary theater troupe in 1968. He co-founded Ze Whiz Kidz\, a lip-synch troupe\, with the late Gorilla Rose in Seattle and later performed comedy with Fayette Hauser and Gorilla at CBGB in New York\, alongside the Ramones\, and the Stilettos with a pre-Blondie Debbie Harry. \nHe made his mark with The Screamers\, a band with no guitars—just one ARP Odyssey synthesizer\, one Fender Rhodes with fuzzbox\, a minimal drum kit\, and Tomata on lead vocals. They never recorded an album but became sensations at The Masque\, the Whisky a Go Go\, and the Roxy in Los Angeles with their meticulously polished productions. \nAfter the final breakup of The Screamers in 1981\, Tomata embarked on a new career as a painter and evolved into a revered folk artist who worked the storefront gallery circuit in Seattle\, L.A.\, Miami\, New Orleans\, and San Francisco. He always said he’d sooner sell 100 of his trademark instant paintings depicting his favorite artists and other plain folks at $25 each than one at $25\,000. And that’s exactly what he did. \nPhoto: Marva Marrow

SUMMARY:Robbie O. Leaver and Jim Coleman This Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:A Musical Performance \nRobbie O. Leaver and Jim Coleman return to Howl! Happening as This Wilderness. Originally performing as Birdthrower\, they played a memorable show alongside Lydia Lunch in conjunction with Voyeur\, Beth B’s exhibition at the gallery. \nFusing darkness and humor\, intimacy and expansion\, disrupted circuitry and the whisper of breath\, the music and personality of This Wilderness is uniquely seductive and disquieting. The raw emotional quality of Leaver’s vocals combined with the ethereal and intense atmosphere of Coleman’s music create a connection with the psyche that is both profound and touching. \nAbout the Performers\nJim Coleman has a deep history in the NYC music scene. He was an integral member of the seminal post-industrial band Cop Shoot Cop. Coleman recorded and performed solo as Phylr and released Trees\, a solo album of electroacoustic ambient music. In July 2017\, he released a techno album\, No More Fear\, as J-CO on Italian house label Defora. He has scored music for independent films and television\, working with directors including Hal Hartley\, Beth B\, Todd Philips\, and Richard Kern. Music collaborations include Lydia Lunch\, J.G. Thirlwell\, and noted Italian composer Teho Teardo. Coleman currently splits his time between This Wilderness and his other band\, The Children\, a collective of musicians centered around a core collaboration with Michael Weiner and Phil Puleo. \nRobert O. Leaver is a musician\, writer\, and performance artist. He is currently recording an album of his solo acoustic project\, Birdthrower\, produced by Grammy-winner Ben Harper. He has also written for television and film\, collaborating with author Sebastian Junger as well as producer/filmmaker Larry Fessenden\, with whom he co-wrote the critically acclaimed film The Last Winter. Leaver has also written for Esquire\, Sports Afield\, Tin House\, and High Times magazines\, among others. Leaver’s performance art piece Crawling Home found him crawling the length of Manhattan on his hands and knees\, wearing his father’s vintage business suit. Another performance piece\, Hole Earth\, involved him digging and occupying holes in various locations around the world while wearing said suit. Leaver writes about his experiences. He grew up down the road from Walden Pond and is a longtime resident of Washington Heights.

SUMMARY:Daniel Wolff Grown-Up Anger
DESCRIPTION:The Connected Mysteries of Bob Dylan\, Woody Guthrie\, and the Calumet Massacre of 1913 \nDiscussion in conjunction with Brett De Palma exhibition \nHe is a deliberately seditious artist who refuses to make his subject and palette soothing and acceptable. Everything about his work is impolitic and eye-catching: an unlikely combination that has a particular frisson to it. Given the bitter tonic of reality we must drink every day; De Palma’s disjunctive miscellany feels right. —John Yau\, “Brett De Palma’s Aesthetic Disobedience”\, from the exhibition catalog \nDrawing parallels to the social criticism in Brett De Palma’s paintings on view at the gallery and to the current political climate\, Grammy-nominated and award-winning author Daniel Wolff will speak on his latest book\, Grown-up Anger: The Connected Mysteries of Bob Dylan\, Woody Guthrie\, and the Calumet Massacre of 1913\, hailed by The New York Times as an “elegantly written and insightful cultural history” and which The Wall Street Journal calls a “gripping account…[that] blasts through layers of American history.” \nThe loss of innocence is one thing. It’s inevitable\, happens to all of us\, may even offer a chance to learn. The slaughter of innocence is something else. It comes forward carrying more than we can count\, crazed with color\, infiltrating the future. —Daniel Wolff\, from his essay in the Brett De Palma exhibition catalog \n
