Happening is pleased to present Play What You Like: Fluxus\, Music & More curated by Jade Dellinger\, opening Saturday\, June 18th from 6-8 PM and running through July 31st. Drawing its title from an early work by the Italian Fluxus artist/composer Giuseppe Chiari\, Play What You Like: Fluxus Music & More highlights both historical works and the works of those influenced by those historical precedents. \nMost heavily inspired by the ideas of John Cage\, Fluxus art often relied on chance to shape the outcome and actively involved the viewer. Fluxus compositions or scores for performances and events involved simple actions\, ideas\, and objects from everyday life. Incorporating concrete poetry\, visual art and writing\, Fluxus performances were the embodiment of Dick Higgins’ idea of “intermedia”—a dialogue between two or more media to create a third\, entirely new art form. \nYet\, as many of the Fluxus artists had formal training in music\, musical composition and performance (frequently involving the alteration\, misuse or abuse of traditional instruments) became central to their activity. Beginning with a series of festivals featuring concerts of experimental music and other avant-garde performance\, Fluxus artists reacted against the commodification of art\, its commercialization in the gallery system\, and its static presentation in museums. A primary goal of most Fluxus artists was to destroy any boundary between art and life. Founder George Maciunas stated that Fluxus was “anti-art\,” to underscore the revolutionary mode of thinking about the practice and process of art while using humor to mock the elitist world of “high art” and to bring art to the widest possible audience. \nIn addition to the artists listed above\, of particular note will be the interactive installation JOHN CAGE 33 1/3 performed by Howl! gallery-goers. Conceived in 1969 as an “audience participation” work\, John Cage’s original “score” simply stipulated that the gallery be filled with about a dozen record players and two- to three-hundred vinyl records. Visitors to the gallery are encouraged to act as DJs and create a musical mix by playing records freely and thus performing the work. \nAccording to guest curator Jade Dellinger\, “when the work was first installed at the University of California in Davis\, a local record store graciously volunteered the hundreds of necessary records. However\, as Cage never discussed condition or specified titles\, the store promptly sent over the most common and undesirable\, damaged and utterly unsalable records in their inventory.” Dellinger was inspired by a line from a letter he received in the 80s from Cage in which the composer noted that “I am not interested in the names of movements but rather in seeing and making things not seen before.” \nA prominent group of visual artists and performers (even a few Rock & Roll Hall of Famers) have submitted top ten picks or album playlists to fill record bins. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 12\, 2016 / 7 PM /\n$30 Suggested Donation\nWith Alice Moy\, Cornelius Loy\, and Music by Samoa \nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival \nKembra Pfahler is a punk rocker\, screen goddess\, curator and performance artist who moved from Los Angeles to the East Village in the early 1980s. Over the course of her time in New York\, she’s modeled for Calvin Klein\, sung lead in theatrical death metal band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black\, and created performances based on Anti-Naturalism and Availabilism\, the tenet of which is making the best of what’s available to create performances—as an expression of an ineffable part of oneself. \nRebel Without a Cock is an epic-length Karen Black song from the album “Fuck Island.” This work uses classic rock like the bread and the performance art aspect like the butter. “It makes the sharing of this work a little happier and less austere\,” says Kembra as she describes the album as “having the worst titles she has ever come up with” and looks forward to putting them all onto t-shirts. She feels that a show is only as good as the t-shirt and says she would “prefer to wear a Rebel Without a Cock t-shirt to an Annie or Chicago t-shirt. When pressed to further explain the content of this performance she recommended “it would be better to know as little as possible about the performance so as to be more surprised.” Participating in the performance are Samoa\, co- founder and lead guitarist of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen black and band member Alice Moy. An artist\, Samoa will be having his first solo painting show at Howl! Happening in January 2018. \nPfahler’s work has been included in solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects\, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center\, and The Hole\, New York\, NY; Rove Gallery\, London\, UK; and hpgrp Gallery\, Tokyo\, Japan. She was a featured artist in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. She will have a solo exhibition at the Leopold Thun gallery in London opening November 2016. She has toured and performed extensively with The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black throughout the world and her extensive body of film work is housed in the Fales library at New York University. In 2014 she developed “Performance Art 101\,” a curriculum that she has taught at prestigious educational institutions like CalArts and elsewhere. DESCRIPTION:Portrait of David Byrne by Marcia Resnick \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to shine a light on another important source of East Village social and cultural history: The East Village Eye. A monthly magazine published from 1979 through 1987\, The East Village Eye focused on popular and avant-garde culture\, politics and other issues relevant to the East Village and environs. Self-styled as “a community in print\,” the magazine is noted for its groundbreaking coverage of the emerging punk\, new wave and hip hop music scenes of the time\, as well as the influential art\, literature\, film and performance worlds of the era. \nThe East Village Eye Show will feature covers\, centerfolds\, interior pages\, ephemera and photographic prints\, as well as key artwork from the era. The show draws from the nearly 4\,000 pages\, 3\,000 photographs\, sets of original copies and attendant materials that constitute The East Village Eye Archive\, dubbed “the King Tut’s tomb of downtown New York.” \nArtist and Colab co-founder Christof Kohlhofer was the first art director of the Eye. Kohlhofer\, who studied with Joseph Beuys\, introduced Abrams to the influential artists who were a part of the flourishing EV art scene. “I credit Christof with steering the Eye towards art\, but also for injecting a Beuys-like approach. Basically doing whatever was necessary at the time\,” says Abrams in the 2014 Hyperallergic article The East Village Eye: Where Art\, Hip Hop\, and Punk Collided. \nAs a result\, the magazine featured art world luminaries including David Wojnarowicz\, Richard Hell\, Cookie Mueller\, Lucy Lippard\, and Rene Ricard. The magazine’s covers read like a who’s who of cultural influencers like Patti Astor\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, and Vito Acconci; emerging artists such as Sue Coe\, Barbara Kruger and Kiki Smith; as well as musicians like Patti Smith\, Run DMC\, Annie Lennox\, and the Beastie Boys. \nRichard Hell explained how he and other New Yorkers\, and not English kids\, “invented” punk; Cookie Mueller dished out bold and often hilarious health advice; Glenn O’Brien\, the leading avant-pop writer and media figure\, expounded on the New York Yankees; and the aforementioned David Wojnarowicz wrote about his harrowing past and present as a street hustler and later as an artist living with HIV. \nCreative collaboration was the hallmark of the magazine’s legacy. “The mix of fashion\, music\, art\, politics\, comics etc.\, the way it was presented by the Eye\, the constant changing impact through all those different people who worked on the paper\, and Leonard’s attitude not to interfere with that\, made it a very lively subject\,” says Kohlhofer in the Hyperallergic article. \nOver a period of eight years\, the magazine chronicled the spectacular rise and eventual implosion of the East Village art scene. The Eye‘s coverage of the arts and music scenes helped illuminate the psychosocial conflicts running through EV/LES culture\, NYC\, and beyond. Later issues of the Eye touched upon the beginnings of radical changes in the neighborhood. In April 1986 the magazine ran a feature on the rise of “The East Village Yuppie.” Sixth months earlier\, the Eye’s art editor\, Carlo McCormick\, published an obituary for the neighborhood’s art scene. “Though the greed and envy have disbanded our beautiful community\,” wrote McCormick\, “the East Village will continue to exist as the simulacrum of itself. The art world is finally ready to preserve our youth like the glamorous visage of the internally decrepit Dorian Grey.” \nUltimately\, The East Village Eye was the monthly record of a time and place in which the radical shifts of the post-Vietnam era produced a reckless thirst for experience and expression that redefined the world we live in today. Through this exhibition\, Howl! Happening stands in solidarity with the EV/LES artists and community—past and present—whose creativity continues to fuel us. \nSpecial Events are also planned. Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \n  \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of famed rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. He performed in New York City clubs and theaters as The Alien Comic\, appearing in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and later at the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986.

DESCRIPTION:September 18th / 7 PM / Free\nA Panel Discussion with Leonard Abrams\, Yasmin Ramirez\, Sur Rodney (Sur)\, Arthur Fournier\, and Anthony Haden-Guest \nExpanding upon the East Village Eye Show\, key figures from the period discuss the times and the neighborhood that changed the culture forever. \nLeonard Abrams\, Moderator\nLeonard Abrams acted as editor and publisher of the East Village Eye during the entirety of its run from 1979 through 1987. He then co-founded the multiracial hip hop clubs The Milky Way and Hotel Amazon in New York during 1987 and 1988\, and has served as music editor of Details magazine\, U.S. editor of Soul Underground magazine in London\, as well as Masthead literary magazine in Melbourne. His first feature documentary film\, Quilombo Country\, was released in 2006 and he is working on his second documentary\, concurrently with his work on the preservation and dissemination of materials related to the East Village Eye archive\, from which the materials for The East Village Eye Show are largely drawn. \nPanelists \nYasmin Ramirez\nYasmin Ramirez\, Ph.D. is an art historian and independent curator. Ramirez has worked at Taller Boricua\, El Museo Del Barrio\, The Studio Museum\, The New Museum\, Art in General\, the Alternative Museum\, Franklin Furnace and the East Village Eye. While at the Eye\, she was instrumental in exposing the talents of young graffiti art pioneers to the recognized art world and beyond. \nSur Rodney (Sur)\nSur Rodney (Sur) is a writer\, archivist\, curator\, artistic collaborator and former co-director of Gracie Mansion Gallery who left his position in 1988 to pursue ever-pressing concerns with archiving and records management of artists with HIV/AIDS. He served on the board of Visual AIDS for over a decade\, where he helped establish the Frank Moore Archive Project of Visual AIDS to assist artists with HIV/AIDS\, their estates\, curators and scholars. \nArthur Fournier\nArthur Fournier is an archivist and independent rare book dealer based in Brooklyn\, New York. He has worked as a consultant on the placement of major archives and collections with tier-one research institutions including The New York Public Library\, Stanford University\, and Cornell\, and has a particular interest in convergences of the avant-garde\, popular and fine arts. \nAnthony Haden-Guest\nAnthony Haden-Guest\, a writer\, reporter\, cartoonist and curator\, has published in leading magazines in Britain and America\, including Vanity Fair\, Esquire and GQ\, and increasingly online at Artnet and The Daily Beast. His most recent books are True Colors: The Real Life of the Art World (Grove Atlantic) and The Last Party: Studio 54\, Disco and the Culture of the Night (William Morrow and Company). Marat/Sade unleashes a host of luminaries from the New York City performance scene to shred the delicate sensibilities of its audience: Edgar Oliver\, David Cale\, Bree Benton\, Julie Atlas Muz\, James ‘Tigger!’ Ferguson\, Daniel Booth (aka Sweetie)\, Colleen O’Neill\, Brian Butterick\, Flloyd\, Agosto Machado\, Joan Marie Moossy\, Brenda Bergman\, Natasha Thweatt\, and more! \nIn this play within a play set in the historical Charenton Asylum\, the Marquis de Sade directs inmates of the institution in a historical re-enactment of the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat.  Marat/Sade was originally published in German in 1962 and was presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964 under the direction of Peter Brook. In a drunken reverie\, she wanders through the lives of the men who watch her sing night after night\, looking for love—trying to make sense of how she got there in the first place\, hoping for a ticket out. \nDirected by Robert Feinberg\, Heaven Wants Out captures New York City in the 70s and also includes appearances by Mary Woronov\, Holly Woodlawn\, Ondine\, and fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo. A high-flying diplomat\, Jesurun’s Faust is susceptible to love and its inevitable pain\, a vulnerability exploited by his often-sympathetic\, female Mephistopheles. Bedeviled by a kind of 360-degree vision\, she sees everything from every point of view\, simultaneously\, and is the atmospheric center of the play. This story of Faust is set in modern secular times. Secular time infers that neither God nor the Devil exist\, and the piece explores Faust’s own responsibility and motivation for his work and life. \nThe play itself has a particular worldview: the messiness of contemporary life. Its given setting is simultaneously before\, during and after our present time. It implies a precarious international panorama of eternally shifting layers of history\, time and expectations. \nFAUST/How I Rose was originally commissioned by The Builders Association and Theater Neumarkt in Zurich in 1996 and performed in Europe and the U.S. as Jump Cut (Faust). In 1998\, it was directed by acclaimed Mexican director Martín Acosta at the National Theatre of Mexico where it ran for several months in sold out performances. After a series of other Mexican runs\, it was performed at the Cervantino Festival in Mexico and BAM’s Next Wave Festival in 2004. Photographs by Bobby Grossman\, Allan Tannenbaum\, Harvey Wang\, and Ande Whyland d’s are a key part of the book’s documentation of New York party culture in the early 80s\, a time when DJing\, live music\, experimental video and film\, performance art\, and immersive happenings combined to create one of the most explosively creative eras in the city’s history. \nCapturing many protagonists and venues—from the Mudd Club to Club 57 to Danceteria to the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge—these photographs provide a compelling portrait of New York in the midst of its participatory peak. \nThe Photography Show presents a selection of these photographers’ work with commentary that reveals some of the stories behind the images as well as recollections of the era. Dany Johnson\, Club 57 DJ\, will contribute to Ande Whyland’s presentation and Richard Boch\, door person at the Mudd Club\, will narrate Bobby Grossman’s photographs\, as he could not be with us in person. \nAbout the Participants\nTim Lawrence\nBobby Grossman\nAllan Tannenbaum\nHarvey Wang\nAnde Whyland \nDany Johnson worked as the main DJ at Club 57\, the influential downtown party that mixed film screenings\, DJing\, participatory performance and immersive happenings. She cultivated a style that brought camp retro records into a creative\, fun-loving setting. She also DJed at the Pyramid\, and Mudd Club\, where she and Ann Magnuson helped refurbish the second floor lounge. \nRichard Boch is an artist\, writer\, and lifelong New Yorker. He has just completed 77 White\, a direct personal account of New York’s legendary Mudd Club\, centered on the 22 months in 1979 and 1980 spent working the door. In 2014\, he moderated the panel discussion GoNightclubbing at NYU’s Fales Library. He is also editing Bobby Grossman’s Low Fidelity: Still Photographs 1975–1983. In November 2015\, he served on the host committee of the Mudd Club Rummage Sale benefitting the Bowery Mission. 77 White is Richard Boch’s first book.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 10\, 2016 / 7 PM\nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival\nAlvin Eng brings the third in his Portrait Plays cycle of historical dramas about artists and portraiture. \nEng will present a work in progress reading from the third in his Portrait Plays cycle of historical dramas about artists and portraiture. The Imperial Image is a dramatic triptych that explores how and why portraits of political leaders and royalty have come to hold a powerful place in societal structures and rituals. The triptych spans three different regions and eras. The play begins with a dialogue in Mughal era India\, as Western-educated and influenced emperors and court painters contemplate how to communicate and relate to their largely illiterate populace. Part II is a monologue from Marie Antoinette’s court portraitist\, Louise Élisabeth Vigée LeBrun. During the French Revolution she fled to St. Petersburg\, where she was befriended by Catherine the Great. Many of Mme. Vigée LeBrun’s works are included in the original Hermitage collection. The play concludes in the current era: OBEY/HOPE re-imagines the circumstances surrounding Shepard Fairey’s creation of the ubiquitous “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.  The cast will feature Marie Christine Katz\, Nicky Paraiso and Imran Sheikh. The reading will be directed by Wendy Wasdahl and Alvin Eng \nThis June\, the second Portrait Play\, 33 & 1/3 Cornelia Street\, was presented at the Howl! Gallery’s Beat & Beyond Festival\, featuring Bowery Poetry founder Bob Holman as Joe Gould and the legendary Mink Stole—who has been featured in all of John Waters’ films—playing iconic painter Alice Neel. Three Trees\, the first Portrait Play\, about the haunting relationship between Alberto Giacometti and Isaku Yanaihara\, premiered Off-Broadway with the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre and was also presented as a workshop reading with Center Stage in Baltimore and the Moving Parts Theatre in Paris. Eng is a native NYC playwright\, performer and professor. He is currently Visiting Professor/Head of the MFA Playwriting Program at Queens College/CUNY and is also a Fulbright Specialist Scholar in Theatre/U.S. Studies. His plays and performances have been seen throughout NYC and the U.S. as well as in Paris\, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \n  \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Keep Playing chronicles a family’s struggle to maintain their love and control amid the chaos of old age. Plus\, two other short plays: One Minute\, about a victim of the micro-theater craze\, and Held Up\, about a strange encounter enabled by a subway breakdown. \nSmall co-wrote the book for the musical The IT Girl\, which premiered at Off Broadway’s York Theater in 2001. It is performed regionally\, including a well-received production in Vancouver in October 2015. His farce Kaboom!\, starring Ray Wills and directed by B.T. McNicholl\, played to packed houses in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. When the 88-year-old firecracker injures herself weeks before opening night of her latest (and probably last) Broadway musical\, the show is put on hold. Her indomitable will to perform is challenged further when the show’s producer and longtime friend\, Langston Moorehead\, is quoted blaming the accident on Luella’s lifetime battle with booze. \nMaking matters worse\, Merritt’s longtime assistant suddenly quits\, citing years of abuse. While bitterly recovering alone at her residence at the Regency\, Luella serendipitously reencounters Chip\, a young struggling actor she shared the stage with a decade prior. As Merritt convinces Chip to become her assistant and help her save the show\, an unlikely bond flourishes in this madcap comedic-drama about an almost forgotten legend’s last days surviving showbiz. The story is loosely inspired by my relationship with the late\, great\, Elaine Stritch. \nA graduate of Manhattan’s Professional Performing Arts High School\, Iacono is best known for his portrayal of the title character on MTV’s The Hard Times of RJ Berger. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found\nOctober 19th / 7 PM / Free\nCreated by pioneering multimedia artist Charles Atlas\, Son of Sam and Delilah is “a dark vision of an America where life is cheap and even the moments of tenderness have a life threatening edge.” An amalgam of crosscut scenes\, Son of Sam and Delilah features New York performance luminaries John Kelly (as Delilah)\, Hapi Phace\, Almon Grimsted\, Brian Butterick\, Anna Levine-Thompson\, Casey MacDonald\, Lucy Sexton & Anne Iobst (Dancenoise)\, and Sunny\, in the late 1980s through 1991. \nAtlas explained in 2012: “[Son of Sam and Delilah] was unusual because I had people to help\, and I didn’t know where it was going at first. I only realized after I made it what it was about—all my friends who were dying of AIDS.” \nThis evening concludes with a post-screening discussion with Atlas\, and Stuart Comer\, Chief Curator\, Department of Media and Performance Art\, Museum of Modern Art. \nThe screening is a part of Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found (which will run from October 13 to November 19)\, curated by Ishmael Houston-Jones and Will Rawls. The program will reflect on the AIDS hysteria of 1981 to 1996 through the presentation of performances\, conversations\, film screenings\, a print catalog\, a zine project\, and a vigil. \nThe Platform is named after a trio of dances first performed at Danspace by John Bernd in 1981. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 24\, 2016 / 7 PM\nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival\nPlays and theater reminiscences\, the 60s\, 70s\, and 80s \nThe staged readings of three short plays by actors\, East of the Sun\, Zoe’s Letter\, and Increased Occupancy\, by Robert Heide will be directed by Ralph Lewis\, one of the founders of the Obie-Award winning theater group Peculiar Works Project. Following the readings\, this off and off off Broadway theater veteran will talk about his lifes work with the Living Theater\, La Mama and other storied downtown institutions.  \nRobert Heide studied theater at Northwestern University in Evanston\, Illinois. In New York he attended acting classes with Stella Adler and Uta Hagen. At the Actors Studio his mentors in the Playwright/Directors Unit were Harold Clurman\, Estelle Parsons\, and Horton Foote. His first play Hector was produced initially by The Living Theater at the Cherry Lane Theater on a bill with plays by Jean Cocteau and the poet Kenneth Koch. Later\, Hector was produced by Lee Paton Nagrin at New Playwrights Theater off Broadway with Heide’s second play West of the Moon. \nPlays produced at the Caffe Cino in New York included Moon and The Bed\, and at La MaMa E.T.C. Why Tuesday Never Has a Blue Monday and Statue. Suburban Tremens and Increased Occupancy were produced at Westbeth Theatre Center by New York Theater Strategy. American Hamburger\, Tropical Fever in Key West\, and Crisis of Identity were produced at Theater for the New City. His 25 plays are soon to be published by Fast Books. He has co-authored more than a dozen books on American pop culture\, including three books for Disney: Disneyana\, The Mickey Mouse Watch: From the Beginning of Time\, and Mickey Mouse: The Evolution\, the Legend\, the Phenomenon!. Other books are Box-Office Buckaroos: The Cowboy Hero from the Wild West Show to the Silver Screen\, Home-Front America\, and Starstruck. His play The Bed was filmed by Andy Warhol\, and Heide wrote the screenplay for Warhol’s film Lupe starring Edie Sedgwick. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 25\, 2016 / 7 PM\nPart of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival\nA lighthearted look at young workers in a changing society in the middle of America’s most politically engaged city. —PBS.org \nFirst produced on Broadway from 1937 to 1940\, the title Pins and Needles was created by Max Danish\, long-time editor of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union newspaper Justice. The play looked at current events from a pro-union standpoint and skits spoofed everything from Fascist dictators to bigots and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sponsored by the Union\, the original cast was made up of cutters\, basters\, and sewing machine operators. \nWord-of-mouth was so positive that the cast abandoned their day jobs and the production opened on Broadway\, with a full performance schedule of eight shows per week. New songs and skits were introduced every few months to keep the show topical. Happening is pleased to present Robert Mapplethorpe\, another in filmmaker Paul Tschinkel’s probing ART/new york series\, which profiles influential artists at crucial moments in the careers. Filmed in 1983 in his downtown loft\, the youthful and mythic artist talks with Marc Miller about his ideas\, inspiration\, and the highly charged subject matter depicted in his work. \nRobert Mapplethorpe explores his photography\, his relationship to the downtown New York art world\, and the S&M club scene prevalent in the 80s. His infamously explicit and groundbreaking photographs of the gay leather New York Underground made him a cause célèbre. At the same time\, the quality and artistic achievement inherent in his series of portraits\, sensual flowers\, and transgressive erotic subjects elevated his work and drew the attention of influential dealers\, curators and collectors.  \nThe film includes interviews with Jack Walls\, Mapplethorpe’s partner; artist Brice Marden; Holly Solomon\, his first dealer; the photographer’s father Harry Mapplethorpe; and Father Stack\, the artist’s priest in Floral Park\, Long Island. Also commenting are curator Richard Marshall\, brother Edward Mapplethorpe\, photographer Gilles Larrain\, lawyer Michael Ward Stout\, artist Louise Bourgeois\, and biographer Patricia Morrisroe. \nPaul Tschinkel is a painter with an MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture. In the early 70s he turned to video as an art form and thus became one of the first artists in this new medium. In 1974 he turned to the fledgling New York cable TV system\, producing Paul Tschinkel’s Inner Tube\, a half hour weekly art gallery program. In 1979\, he began taping young bands in New York clubs for his cable show\, a program that ran for three years and inspired and presaged MTV.
