Curated by Howl! Happening\, Sara Driver\, Carlo McCormick\, and Mary-Ann Monforton\, Zeitgeist complements and amplifies the theatrical release of Sara Driver’s film BOOM FOR REAL The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat from Magnolia Pictures. The film premieres on May 11th at IFC\, New York. \nThe period covered in the exhibition and film tells the story of Jean-Michel’s early work\, peers\, and creative community in gritty\, pre-AIDS\, downtown New York—before the rise of the 80s art and real estate juggernaut. It was a time when decay\, drugs\, and dissolution fueled a boom in creativity where the definition of fame\, success\, and power was not based on money\, Facebook likes\, and self-promotion. For these creators\, to be a penniless published poet or a musician gigging at CBs was the height of success. In the rawness of the work\, the focus on street art and graffiti\, and the experimentation and cross-pollination of styles and disciplines\, the era has become a flash point for younger generations seeking to learn about and understand the authenticity\, closeness\, and community expressed in the work of the artists in Zeitgeist. \nThe exhibition—and a series of special events—illuminate Basquiat’s work and that of his friends and other artists\, writers\, filmmakers\, and musicians who emerged from that scene\, including: \nAlexis Adler\, Charlie Ahearn\, Ted Barron\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Philippe Bordaz\, Robert Carrithers\, Henry Chalfant\, Brett De Palma\, Vivienne Dick\, Jane Dickson\, Al Diaz\, Barbara Ess\, Coleen Fitzgibbon\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Futura\, Robert Goldman aka Bobby G\, Godlis\, Nan Goldin\, Richard\, Hambleton\, Michael Holman\, Becky Howland\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland\, Jim Jarmusch\, Justen\, Ladda\, Ann Messner\, Mary-Ann Monforton\, James Nares\, Glenn O’Brien\, Franc Palaia\, Lee Quiñones\, Walter Robinson\, Christy Rupp\, Luc Sante\, Kenny Scharf\, Paul Tschinkel\, Robin Winters\, and Bob Gruen. \nSpecial events will include: \n\nA panel discussion featuring Alexis Adler\, Felice Rosser\, Lee Quiñones\, Al Diaz\, and more\nA screening of Howard Brookner’s 1983 documentary Burroughs: The Movie from the Criterion Collection\nAn evening of films featuring an experimental film by Basquiat’s bandmate Michael Holman\, and Paul Tschinkel’s film about New York/New Wave\, curator Diego Cortez’s groundbreaking exhibition at PS1 in 1981\nA night performance and readings by Felice Rosser and Luc Sante.\nReadings\n\nFilm Series in collaboration with Anthology Film Archives. It was a time of enormous creativity and decay\, when anything was possible on the streets\, in the tenements\, and in brilliant nightclubs. One-night art shows\, wild theme parties\, nightlife and musical happenings of every kind reigned supreme\, in a spirit of collaboration and community. Long gone but not forgotten\, in these vibrant images of New York Carrithers captures the spirit of the times. The author will sign books and present a slide show and commentary about the journey from then to now. \nExperience a Club 57 happening! Carrithers is joined by Ammo\, aka Shawn McQuate the Great\, infamous for creating unique happenings at Club 57 from 1979 to 1982. Participants include former Club 57 members\, surprise guests\, and audience members! \nA happening is all about chance\, the unexpected\, and surprise. Now viewers can enjoy the invigorating candidness of Burroughs: The Movie\, a one-of-a-kind nonfiction portrait that was brought to life with the help of a remarkable crew of friends\, including Jim Jarmusch and Tom DiCillo. The film features on-screen appearances by artist friends of Burroughs including Allen Ginsberg\, Herbert Huncke\, Patti Smith\, and Terry Southern. \nNovelist Stewart Meyer\, a protégé of William S. Burroughs\, will read from his classic Lotus Crew – tales from the early 80’s heroin street trade on the Lower East Side – accompanied by the photographer / filmmaker David Schmidlapp’s projections.

Featuring an anti-cabaret which co-stars the Streets of New York and the Late 20th Century\, and which features appearances by family\, film and fame\, immigration\, joy\, theater and shame\, dance floors\, open doors\, avant-garde life\, papaya ice cream and the Shah of Iran’s wife. A reluctant memoir served on bed of song and dirt\, with a punk aperitif and Jimmy Carter for dessert. \nEszter sings and plays guitar and violin\, while Stew does the quieter singing and plays guitar\, with Vincent Sperrazza on drums and Kato Hideki on bass. \nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nMemory’s a predator \nEszter Balint is a singer-songwriter with three critically-acclaimed solo albums. She grew up as a member of the legendary avant-garde theater company Squat Theatre. She’s had featured roles in films by Jim Jarmusch\, Woody Allen\, and Steve Buscemi—including a role alongside David Bowie—and has recently starred in a six-episode arc in Season 4 of Louis CK’s TV show Louie. Jon Pareles of The New York Times has said of her work: “Miss Balint has her own film noir sensibility as a songwriter. She slips inside her characters to project their restlessness and longing.” \nSinger-songwriter Stew is a founding member of the band The Negro Problem\, and a Tony and Obie award-winning playwright and composer (Passing Strange).

SUMMARY:Michael Holman: An Evening of Films & Discussion with David Hershkovits
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is pleased to present a screening of Michael Holman’s short art films and a discussion with David Hershkovits as part of the exhibition Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat\, which looks at the Downtown and East Village scenes where the young artist left his indelible mark. The films attest to the important role Holman played in shaping the look\, sound\, and flavor of the early 80s downtown art scene in New York City. Stilwende—or\, a changing wind or time in German—is a short film that captures construction workers as they gut the Tribeca club Tier III and transform it into a Bauhaus-inspired\, minimalistic club called Stilwende. \nHolman’s Catch a Beat was the first hip hop film ever made. Finished in 1981\, it aired at The Ritz on East 11th Street as an opening act for the Zulu Nation Throwdown (DJ Afrika Bambaataa\, DJ Jazzy Jay\, the Rock Steady Crew\, and MC Ikey Cee) who were themselves the opening act for the evening’s headliner\, Bow Wow Wow. \nHolman will also screen his 1987 Paulette Goddard Award-winning short film Heads\, You Win\, starring Coati Mundi (of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole and the Coconuts) and Suzanne Mallouk (co-author of the novel Widow Basquiat). Another Vincent Gallo\, Michael Holman\, and Suzanne Mallouk collaboration is the short film Vampire LeStat\, an exploration into horror. \nAlso included in the screening are Holman’s never-broadcasted experimental TV commercials\, which he calls his “ignorant ads.” Holman uses his own source footage\, combining it with random real-and-existing corporate logos to create absurdist versions of TV ads. \nOne of the most important films to be shown will be The Subjective Gaze\, created by Holman to be screened during his debut MoMA live performance The Subjective Gaze\, Parts 1 & 2.  \nThe films will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Holman and David Hershkovits about Holman’s work\, the environment—time and place—of the early 80s\, the Downtown scene\, and the direction of the cultural climate today. \n  \nAbout David Hershkovits \nAfter moving back to New York City in 1977\, David Hershkovits embedded himself in the downtown scene as a writer and editor of the Soho Weekly News. In 1984\, he was a founder of Paper magazine where he served as publisher and editor-in-chief for the next 33 years. \nIn 1982 he was the only reporter on the New York City rap tour that introduced hip hop culture to France and England. He was on the bus along with iconic figures of today that included Afrika Bambaataa\, DST\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Dondi\, Futura\, Ramellzee\, Phase 2\, The Rock Steady Crew with Crazy Legs and the Double Dutch Girls. \nHe is the host of the forthcoming Howlarts podcast “In the Beginning…” And an adjunct professor at CUNY/Queens College where he is teaching a graduate class on the role of media in the evolution of 70s\, 80s and 90s counterculture in New York City. \n  \nAbout Michael Holman \nA New York resident since 1978\, Michael Holman has been a creative and cultural force within\, as well as ambassador of this great city for 40 years. \nAs an artist and social observer\, back in the early 80s\, Holman captured unforgettable moments on film and video of a powerful new subculture called hip hop. As a true hip hop pioneer\, Holman worked diligently through his numerous published writings\, interviews\, film and television productions\, and public events to propel the culture onto the global stage and was the first writer to officially use the term hip hop in a publication (East Village Eye\, January 1982). \nHolman was responsible for organizing and personally managing two of the most popular hip hop dance crews in history—the Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers. Among many other accomplishments in hip hop culture\, Holman created\, produced\, and hosted Graffiti Rock (starring Run DMC and Kool Moe Dee)\, the first nationally-syndicated hip hop television show. \nHolman\, along with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat\, formed the experimental band Gray\, producing layered avant-garde music in combination with performance art and living\, sonic sculpture. Gray performed at legendary nightclubs such as CBGB\, Hurrah\, Club USA\, Tier III\, and The Mudd Club in the early 80s. Recent performances include shows at (Le) Poisson Rouge\, Brooklyn Academy of Music (with Questlove of The Roots)\, Corcoran Gallery of Art\, and the New Museum. \nThe film Gray\, Live at the New Museum was shown at Art Basel Miami Beach; at the opening of the new Parrish Museum building in Water Mill\, Long Island; and at the International Beethoven Festival in Chicago. \nAs a visual artist\, Holman has exhibited his paintings and fine art videos in important group shows such as the Spring/Break Art Show (in 2015 and 2017). In 2018\, a solo show of his paintings was exhibited at the Massey Klein Gallery in New York City. \nAs a performance artist\, Holman presented Confessions of a Subculturalist at the Bruno Walter Auditorium of The New York Public Library Jerome Robbins Dance Division (2017)\, and The Subjective Gaze at MoMA (2018). \nAs a filmmaker\, Holman wrote the screenplay to Miramax’s Julian Schnabel feature film Basquiat; wrote\, produced\, and directed children’s programming for Nickelodeon\, including the Ace Award-winning Blue’s Clues and Eureeka’s Kastle; produced and directed numerous award-winning MTV music videos; and taught screenwriting and filmmaking at Howard University\, The New School for Social Research\, the School of Visual Arts\, City College of New York and other institutions of higher learning.

DESCRIPTION:A Film by Paul Tschinkel with Text and Interviews by Marc H. Miller\nScreening and Discussion with Tschinkel\, Miller\, and Curt Hoppe\nIn 1981\, Diego Cortez organized New York/New Wave\, a large exhibition at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center\, the legendary alternative art space in Long Island City. A hybrid of art\, photography\, music\, and fashion\, the exhibition captured the pulse of a new avant-garde art and music scene and\, in retrospect\, marked an important moment of generational change in the art world. Cortez pulled many of the exhibition’s nearly 100 artists from the fringes of the city’s exploding music and nightclub scene. Many of the artists in the P.S. 1 exhibition—Keith Haring\, Jean-Michel Basquiat (then billed as “Samo”)\, Marcia Resnick\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, Futura 2000\, Nan Goldin—have since become household names. \n  \nThis video program\, a part of Paul Tschinkel’s long-running educational art series ART/new york\, now stands as the most complete record of a seminal exhibition that was widely reviewed at the time but did not have a catalog. Last summer\, the tape was continuously screened as part of the PS1 exhibition A Bit of Matter: The MoMA PS1 Archives\, 1976-2000\, and last fall an edited excerpt of the tape was featured in the exhibition Basquiat: Boom for Real at the Barbican Art Gallery in London\, England. \n  \nAlong with installation footage of the exhibition and an informed narrative\, the tape includes footage of the “no wave” music group DNA and interviews with painter Curt Hoppe (whose X-rated political cartoons from Screw magazine were exhibition highlights) and curator Cortez (who describes the show as a “sociology of elements that make up a scene”).  Following the screening at Howl!\, Paul Tschinkel\, Marc H. Miller\, Curt Hoppe\, and others who participated in New York/New Wave will discuss the exhibition and video. \n

DESCRIPTION:Every Month on The Full Moon\n4pm Sharp\n  \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of the late Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. When dateless and unbooked\, he’d perform on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nTom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. From the mid 80’s on\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Happening is delighted to present Heather Litteer’s reading series W.O.(e).R.D Women of Experience Read Downtown featuring Ada Calhoun\, Pamela Sneed\, Chi Chi Valenti\, and Jo Weldon. \nLitteer started the series more than a decade ago to highlight women that walk a bit off the beaten path and color outside the lines—“my sisters with a downtown state of mind…rebels\, revolutionaries and rock stars!\,” as Litteer describes them. \nBringing together women from all disciplines in the arts to explore new ideas\, read out loud\, and let the inside animal out\, Litteer has cultivated a safe environment for expression\, risk taking\, and literary freedom from societal restraints. \n“It’s a place of no judgment\,” says Litteer\, “where women from diverse threads in the culture can meet and speak to each other and where they are free to voice their lived experience.” \nEven more relevant today than when she began the series\, W.O.(e).R.D started within the Antagonist Art Movement reading series in 2007\, curated by Ethan Minsker of Psycho Moto Zine. In 2010\, it migrated to Wild Project\, where Jo Weldon and Litteer collaborated on hosting and curatorial duties. Heather is part of the HOWL! Happening family\, and we are happy to showcase the series this summer. READ OUT LOUD! \nHeather is the W.O.(e).R.D Woman of Experience Read Downtown creatrix\, curator\, and host. \nAbout Heather Litteer\nHeather Litteer is an actress and has been a vital member of the downtown performance\, alternative cabaret\, and indie film scene. She is the recipient of the 2017 HOWL! Arts Fellowship\, and The William and Eva Fox Foundation and Theatre Communications Group Fox Fellowship in conjunction with La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. She wrote and premiered her one woman show Lemonade at La MaMa. Lemonade went on to the Afterglow Festival in Provincetown\, Special Effects Festival in New York City\, and 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This summer\, the show will be presented at the Playmill 18 festival in London. Litteer is a member of Caden Manson’s critically-acclaimed Big Art Group and of the legendary arthouse performance nightclub The Jackie Factory. She is the producer of W.O.(e).R.D Woman Of Experience Reads Downtown. \nAbout Chi Chi Valenti\nChi Chi Valenti has spent over three decades shaping and chronicling New York City’s nightclub demimonde. Since 1980\, she’s participated in alternative nightlife as producer (Jackie 60\, Night of 1000 Stevies)\, journalist (The Village Voice\, Details\, Interview)\, venue owner (Mother)\, doorperson (The Mudd Club)\, and publisher (Verbal Abuse Magazine\, The Motherboards NYC). With her husband Johnny Dynell\, Valenti formed The Jackie Factory in 1990—a creative collective that produced the weekly Jackie 60 club for a decade and is still active today. Valenti will read from the memoir One Decadent Life\, penned by her late dear friend\, the literary and fetish icon Terence Sellers\, who died in 2016 and is best known for the S&M classic The Correct Sadist. \nAbout Ada Calhoun\nAda Calhoun is the author of the New York City history St. Marks Is Dead: The Many Lives of America’s Hippest Street\, and the memoir Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give. \nAbout Jo Weldon\nJo Weldon is headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque and author of The Burlesque Handbook (It Books\, 2010). She is a member of the Burlesque Hall of Fame and a passionate sex workers’ rights activist who has lobbied at the United Nations. She stripped her way through college and now teaches stripping at colleges. She is also the author of Fierce: The History of Leopard Print (Harper Design\, 2018) and an advocate for big-cat conservation and ethical fashion. She’s probably wearing leopard print right now. \nAbout Pamela Sneed\nPamela Sneed is an American poet\, performance artist\, actress\, activist\, and teacher. She is the author of two collections of poetry—Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom Than Slavery (Henry Holt & Co.\, 1998) and Kong And Other Works (Vintage Entity Press\, 2009)—and the chapbook Lincoln (2014). Her poems and monologues have been anthologized in The 100 Best African American Poems\, edited by Nikki Giovanni. His new band is called The PI Power Trio. \nPat has written music for film and television\, including the HBO series Bored to Deathand Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. He is currently composing the score for the new Netflix series The Good Cop. Currently at work on a novel\, a recent essay of hers will appear in the liner notes for the hotly-anticipated Domino Records box set\, G Stands for Go-Betweens Volume II. \n  \nMaggie Dubris is the author of In The Dust Zone (Centre-Ville books\, 2010)\, Skels (Soft Skull Press\, 2004) and Weep Not\, My Wanton (Black Sparrow Press\, 2002). Her latest book\, BrokeDown Palace\, will be coming out from SubPress in 2019. She is a songwriter who co-founded the all-female extravaganza Homer Erotic with the late Barbara Barg (Homerica the Beautiful\, Depth of Field records 1999). Maggie has also been working as a soundscape artist on installations with the visual artist Linda Byrne\, and video artist Sang-ah Choi. She worked as a 911 paramedic for 25 years\, and currently works as a set medic for the TV show Law and Order: SVU. \n  \nNationally-acclaimed Lower East Side-based playwright\, dramaturge and director Tom Cole has received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Edward Albee Foundation\, with work presented at Participant\, Dixon Place\, ICA Boston and Threadwaxing Space among many others. Head of the New Play Commissioning Program at True Love Productions and curator of the “Experiments and Disorders” literary series at Dixon Place (where he is also a member of the board)\, Tom co-directed HOPELESSNESS with Anohni (aka Antony and the Johnsons) at the Park Avenue Armory\, touring Europe including the Barbican in London and Edinburgh International Festival. He also produced Antony and the Johnson’s TURNING at St. Ann’s Warehouse in 2003 and 2000-2002 directed the Market Theater in Cambridge presenting new work by Antony and the Johnsons\, Ping Chong\, David Mamet\, Ricky Jay\, Kate Robin and others. DESCRIPTION:Diving deep into the roots of hip hop in New York City with exceptional artist duo Charlie Ahearn and Jane Dickson. Ahearn’s Scratch Slide Show\, circa 1980 was projected live in the Ecstasy Garage and Underground hip hop club in the Bronx among others. \nNew York City Hip Hop Convention—made with Fred Brathwaite—is a raw video snapshot of what the early hip hop community was like. \nCity Maze documents Jane Dickson’s collaborative cardboard installation\, originally installed in Fashion Moda in The Bronx in 1980. The bad news? People in the U.S. won’t get to experience the eclipse—unless they come to Howl!   \nPassers-by and gallery goers will experience what the astrologers are calling the Blood Moon\, but our in-house insane-astral-genius—Hapi\, of course—calls it\, The Thunder / Buck Full Moon. \n\n4 PM—On the Sidewalk Outside Howl \nI Have Heard the Garden Gnomes Sing \nPartly poetic\, partly prophetic\, partly pathetic\, your host Hapi Phace presents a stream-of-consciousness sound poem\, as taught to him by the mythical elf and gnome vaudeville team Thunder & Buck.  \n7 PM—Inside the Gallery \nA yet Untitled NSFW Tribute to the United Nations  \nCoinciding with this full moon is a full lunar eclipse—or Blood Moon—which will be visible in other parts of the globe. LMCC.net \n\n  \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archive of Tom Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed his quirky\, comedic Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona\, on a sidewalk or in a club. Always including a plethora of guest performers\, he pushed the careers of such groundbreaking pioneers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger and Lisa Kron among many others. Performing and promoting his madness and magic\, we keep his tradition alive with monthly performances in the gallery and on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nTom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. From the mid 80’s on\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine.
