DESCRIPTION:Talk of the injustice of the criminal justice system is at an all-time high. But how much do we know about what happens once incarcerated individuals are released? \nRSA US and Howl! Happening is pleased to present this salon as an open conversation on the challenges of life after incarceration\, specifically as they relate to the obstacles preventing returning citizens from building a career. The discussion will center on returning citizens\, both as featured speakers and members of the audience. The salon will aim to create a better understanding of the challenges people have faced in building a career since their experience in prison.  \nOrganizations in attendance will be encouraged to reflect on shifts they can make in response to the testimonies of returning citizens\, who will voice their career ambitions. These organizations could possibly offer connections or career opportunities that address their needs. \nThis salon features Julio Medina\, founder and CEO of Exodus Transitional Community; Dominic Dupont\, star of the documentary Raised in the System; Coss Marte\, CEO and founder of Conbody—who after serving a 10-year prison sentence started his own fitness company—and Ashish Prashar\, FRSA\, who served time in London and then had a lengthy career in both British and American politics\, serving as press secretary to the Mayor of London. \n

DESCRIPTION:A Screening with Television Producer Joseph Lovett \nQ&A and Discussion with Susan Martin and Sally Morrison \nIn 1983\, television producer and journalist Joseph Lovett successfully pleaded with ABC’s 20/20 executives to create the first investigative reports on AIDS for network TV. Howl! Happening and Some Serious Business are pleased to present the pioneering 20/20 segment he produced\, and other selected video clips of his early reporting that highlight the responsibility and difficulties of reporting on the epidemic during a decade of discrimination. Joining Lovett for a discussion following the screening are Susan Martin and Sally Morrison\, both of whom were on the frontlines with Dr. Mathilde Krim in the tumultuous early days of the AIDS crisis\, helping to raise awareness and put a face to the human costs of the disease.  \nClips include: \n\nAIDS 1983: (5/19/83) The first in a series of investigative reports on a new epidemic. First place\, Lincoln University Unity Award in Media.\nAIDS in the Heartland: (9/26/85) As the epidemic takes hold\, a young mother and her family deal with AIDS in Lafayette\, Indiana. The concept of the music video is visual club art—highlighting the individuality and diversity of dancers and their signature styles while showcasing some of Kindbud’s favorite New York City performers\, such as Javier Madrid\, Xander\, Dario Sanchez\, and many more.  \nAccompanying the premiere will be performances by fellow cast members Bobbie\, Alissa Brianna\, Delicia Glam\, and Lawrence LT Thompson. The video not only features the original mix of Ladies & Gentlemen\, but also the official remix by DJ/producer Tres Manos (Barcelona\, Spain) featured on Kindbud’s follow-up EP\, The Soho Sessions Remixes\, released on June 14\, 2019. Born in 1944 in Forest Hills\, Queens\, Candy Darling captured the hearts and minds of many with her beauty and talent as illustrated by the devotion she inspired from Andy Warhol\, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with writer and critic Cynthia Carr\, director Jamie Rasin and writer and actor George Abagnalo. \nCynthia Carr is the author\, most recently\, of Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz. She is at work on a biography of Candy Darling. \nJames Rasin is a filmmaker and digital artist. DESCRIPTION:Screening and Q&A \nSex had become the great equalizer. Young men of all financial strata and backgrounds met in New York to experience a freedom of sexual expression that hadn’t been known since ancient Rome. \nHowl! Happening and Some Serious Business are pleased to present the groundbreaking documentary film Gay Sex in the 70s. Directed by Joseph Lovett\, the film documents gay life in New York—from Greenwich Village to the Fire Island Pines—during the decade of liberation and sexual abandon following Stonewall and before the outbreak of AIDS. Gay men cruised the streets\, frequented gay bars\, and had loads and loads of sex. The film puts this outpouring of sexuality into perspective by looking at what gay life was like before 1969\, what set the stage for the explosion\, and how the political climate of the time influenced sexual expression. Lovett’s characters explore the experience that was ‘escaping to New York\,’ the reasons they left the cities they had spent their entire lives in\, and how things changed after the Sexual Revolution had begun. \nOnly 12 years after Stonewall\, AIDS brought this unprecedented era of sexual freedom to a close. The film combines archival footage and interviews with author and activist Larry Kramer\, photographer Tom Bianchi\, and others. The evening is introduced by Lovett with a Q&A following the screening. Howl! DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Wednesday\, June 19\, 6–8 PM \n  \nI’ve done so much with so little for so long that now I believe I can do anything with nothing at all. —Guy Woodard \nShowcasing a refined technique born of necessity\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present Guy Woodard’s We the People\, an exhibition that illuminates one artist’s work and world\, building a case for social justice and a contemporary dialogue around mass incarceration. \nHowl! is pleased to present Woodard’s series of evocative ballpoint pen drawings that frame deeply moving illustrations of black life. Also included in the exhibition will be forgeries of documents that point to issues relevant to contemporary art and social history\, including Tamir Rice’s police academy diploma and the diploma of Trayvon Martin from Howard University. \nA former counterfeiter and forger\, Woodard’s 20-year “criminal” career ended with a seven-year forced hiatus in a federal facility. Having aspired to be an artist his entire life\, he viewed his time in prison as an opportunity to perfect his craft. His bubble burst when the Federal Bureau of Prisons officer in charge of the arts-and-crafts department informed Woodard he wasn’t allowed oil paints or turpentine. “You’re supposed to be an artist. Learn to paint with something else\,” the officer taunted.  \nContemplating what he might use as a medium\, he noticed the tiny dots in an old\, grainy newspaper photograph. Inspired by the illustrators he saw in magazines growing up—among them Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish—he began to approach his drawings like oil paintings\, applying his dots of ink in layers to create depth and rhythm. He taught himself to “paint” with a 25-cent Bic pen. What began as an act of defiance has enabled the artist to fulfill his love for detail and definition as no other medium could. \nIllustrating an alternative metaphor of contemporary American life\, Woodard’s subjects do not inhabit Rockwell’s ideal world. Rather his “maximinalist” realist paintings reflect and represent contemporary black life\, activism\, and culture. We the People\, the piece which names the exhibition\, illustrates a zero-tolerance case in which the court upheld the arrest and booking of a 12-year-old girl for eating a French fry on the Washington\, D.C. subway system\, where consuming food is prohibited by law. \n“Howl’s vision is to use art and creativity as an entry point to create dialogue around issues of social importance. Prison is dehumanizing\, but people find ways to express freedom\, to connect to their humanity\,” says Jane Friedman\, executive director of Howl! Happening.  \nA series of panel discussions and special events will delve into the prison industrial complex and the historical and contemporary conditions that create the necessity for prisons. Featured will be a panel on artmaking in prison with writer and Rutgers professor Nicole Fleetwood\, whose book Marking Time: Prison Art and Public Culture is scheduled for publication in February 2020. \n“Guy’s art is one example of what men and women inside prison can and do create every day\,” say Katherine Cheairs\, Howl’s director of education. \nWoodard will also lead an evening of artmaking as part of the free Vega Arts Workshop series on Wednesday\, July 10th from 7–9 PM.  \n  \nAbout the Vega Arts Workshop Series \nAs part of its continuing commitment to the community\, Howl! SUMMARY:Dean Lance: Mourn The Dead\, Fight Like Hell For The Living
DESCRIPTION:Lance is a Brooklyn-born video and visual artist whose work has been broadcast on PBS and screened at film festivals\, universities\, and museums internationally including MoMA\, MoCA\, and the New Museum\, He earned his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 1980 and incorporates his training in animation into his imagery\, often composing his first draft through the viewfinder of a Polaroid. \nAs a lifelong New Yorker\, his work captures and celebrates the passion\, enthusiasm\, and energy of his fellow activists and the quest for basic human rights—documenting and creating a first-hand record of events that mark pivotal moments that might otherwise be forgotten. His longtime colleague Penny Arcade describes him as having “drawn his way through the AIDS crisis.” A veteran member of ACT UP’s DIVA TV (as in those “damned interfering video activists”)\, his award-winning video\, A Hard Reign’s Gonna Fall (Best Music Video\, Atlanta Film and Video Festival\, 1991) has been shown throughout the United States and internationally.

In her latest body of work\, collected in this new publication\, Galembo turns to Mexico\, where she captures cultural performances with a subterranean political edge. Using a direct\, unaffected portrait style\, Galembo captures her subjects informally posed but often strikingly attired in traditional or ritualistic dress.\n\nMasking is a complex tradition in which the participants transcend the physical world and enter the spiritual realm. Happening is pleased to give ‘Howlers’ a multi-media celebration of Barbara Rubin in conjunction with the IFC premiere of the documentary “Barbara Rubin & the Exploding NY Underground\, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker Chuck Smith and host Cary Abrams.  \nMade when she was just 18 years old\, Barbara Rubin’s art-porn masterpiece Christmas On Earth shocked New York City’s experimental film scene and inspired its thriving underground.  \nFor the next four years\, Rubin’s filmmaking and irrepressible energy helped shatter artistic and sexist conventions. A mythical zelig of the 60s\, she introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. Beyond shaping the spirit of the time\, Barbara sought the deeper meaning of life. After retiring to a farm with Allen Ginsberg\, she shocked everyone by converting to Hasidic Judaism\, marrying and moving to France to live an anonymous life. Tragically\, she died in 1980 after giving birth to her fifth child. For years\, Jonas Mekas treasured all of Barbara’s letters and films and cherished her memory. Working with Mekas’ footage\, the film takes us inside the world and mind of Barbara Rubin\, a woman who truly believed that film could change the world. \n\nCary Abrams is a writer\, historian\, teacher\, and archivist whose collection of Lower East Side written material was recently acquired by Howl! Happening. \nChuck Smith is a New York-based documentary filmmaker\, TV producer\, and author. His films include the award-winning Barbara Rubin & the Exploding NY Underground (2018)\, a bio-documentary about the 1960’s experimental filmmaker and scenemaker Barbara Rubin; and Forrest Bess: Key to the Riddle (1999) which features Willem Dafoe as the voice of the visionary painter.

Painter\, art critic\, writer\, and publisher\, his work critiques popular culture. Loosely affiliated with postmodernism and The Pictures Generation\, his subversive paintings can be seen in this film\, including visits to Robinson’s Long Island City studio; exhibitions at the Jeff Bailey Gallery in Hudson\, New York; a retrospective exhibition organized by Barry Blinderman in Illinois State University\, Normal\, Illinois; and Deitch Projects\, New York City. Besides Robinson\, critic and curator Carlo McCormick; artist Mark Kostabi; Janelle Reiring\, director of Metro Pictures gallery in New York City; and Jeffrey Deitch of Deitch Projects are interviewed. \nInterviewed by artist and critic Noelle Bodick\, Robinson states: “I am interested in desire and consumer happiness. When I started out\, I wanted to paint like the artists who did illustrations of pulp paperbacks—of romance\, passion\, love. A lot of the things I was reproducing are charged with sexuality…unleashing the libido.”  \nView the trailer \nPaul Tschinkel is the producer and director of the ART/new york video series. A painter and video artist\, he is a graduate of the MFA program at Yale University. His work has been shown widely in Europe\, Japan\, and the U.S.\, at prominent institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, MoMA\, and the National Gallery of Art. Over the years\, Tschinkel’s unique work has become a valuable historical resource on contemporary art and artists. Begun in 1979\, the ART/new york series has covered artists such as Alice Neel\, Chuck Close\, Jeff Koons\, and many more. Tschinkel also produced and recorded many of the punk and new wave bands of the late 70s\, and 80s.

DESCRIPTION:Magazine Launch Party \nHowl! Happening invites you to celebrate the release of Local Knowledge #7. A journal of art and literature\, the magazine brings together poets\, prose writers (fiction and non-fiction)\, and artists to foster conversation\, exploration of the creative flow\, real dialogue\, and experience. As its name implies\, Local Knowledge offers an alternative to the disconnect in the homogenized creative writing scene. The magazine proposes all knowledge is local\, and spreads out from the life and language of people who lead their lives as both artists and individuals struggling with the process of daily experience. SUMMARY:Memorial For Our Beloved Friend and Collaborator Clark Render
DESCRIPTION:Please join us this Monday at Howl! Happening for a memorial for our dear friend Clark Render\, actor\, writer\, musician\, and caring member of our community\, who passed away in early April. \nAn electric performer and Pyramid pioneer along with Black Lips\, John Sex\, Wendy Wild and others\, Clark became a downtown crowd favorite introducing zany characters like Margaret Thatcher\, Tartar\, Dr. Clark Render\, and The Demographics. With his best friend and comedy partner\, David Ilku\, he created the legendary Dueling Bankheads\, as well as the McNelephant Report with Rachel Young. \nAt Danceteria and the Limelight\, he was a welcome attraction with his The Toys That Don’t Care (a Xmas Fable) and many other hilarious variety sketches. \nClark’s bands ‘Hagatha\,’ and ‘Sex in Miami\,’ performed regularly at CBGB’s and word has it that a film being made about Hagatha will be ready for release in September 2020.

DESCRIPTION:The Vega Arts Workshop Series \nCurt Hoppe hosts a master class in Hyperrealism. This three-part experience starts at Howl! Happening with a 45 minute tour of the Bowery then transitions to Hoppe’s studio for a talk about approaches to his work and hands-on demonstration of air brush painting. Participants will be able to practice the air-brushing technique on an in-progress painting. No previous experience necessary and all materials are provided. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: April 24\, 2019 / 6–9 PM / Free\n  \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to showcase the work of Curt Hoppe\, an artist whose work amplifies and illustrates Howl’s dedication to preserving the past and celebrating the contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side. Downtown Portraits explores Hoppe’s work as a photographer and realist painter—penetrating layers of cultural history to reveal the changing faces of the neighborhood. The 105 photographs in the series will be shown at Howl!\, while 20 larger-than-life paintings will be shown at Frank Bernarducci Gallery. \nHoppe\, a realist painter and photographer\, has enjoyed a successful 40-year career driven by meaningful relationships with pioneering downtown creators. While many of the artists\, writers\, musicians\, activists\, and art entrepreneurs appearing in the photographs that make up the series at Howl! are now well known\, this project is conceived not as a hall of fame but as personal homage. Hoppe has been inspired not only by his subject’s youthful achievements but also by their lifelong perseverance and creativity. These are definitely not images of beautiful young creatives\, but rather visions of determined survivors who continue to influence our culture.  \n“It all started with Arturo\,” says Hoppe of the late Arturo Vega\, his longtime friend. Howl! will also feature Hoppe’s larger-than-life painting of Vega—who was not only the source of inspiration for Howl! Happening—but also Hoppe’s first portrait in the Downtown Portraits series. \nWhat began with one large realist painting has become an all-consuming project that Hoppe has pursued for nine years. As a long-time denizen of downtown New York\, Hoppe pays tribute to the core group of artists who offered him friendship and direction when he first arrived in the city in the mid-70s and who continue to inspire and define him today\, both as artist and member of a vibrant and enduring creative community.    \n“I want this exhibition to be forward-looking\,” he says. “These artists found a way to survive and to thrive\, and their wisdom continues to have a profound impact on today’s culture. We’re cooler now than we were back then. Our lives are on our faces.” The famous hang side by side with unsung heroes. His project is not about vanity or celebrity or self-promotion\, but rather\, like a yearbook of friends one hung with\, learned from\, and created mischief with\, the show traces the lines of connection of some of the most influential creators of our time including John and Charlie Ahearn\, Penny Arcade\, Patti Astor\, Beth B\, James Chance\, Diego Cortez\, Brett DePalma\, Jane Dickson\, Coleen Fitzgibbon\, Richard Hambleton\, John Holmstrom\, Lady Pink\, Arto Lindsay\, Colette Lumíère\, Tom Otterness\, Walter Robinson\, Marcia Resnick\, and Robin Winters\, among others. \nThe accompanying catalog\, featuring the photographs and paintings along with essays by Marc H. Named Book of the Month by Leica Fotografie International magazine\, Efram’s debut collection published by Tractor-Beam captures the street opera and bravura of a Fellini cast.  \nThis exclusive HOWL! Happening evening brings the spirit of the street into the gallery with a cinematic soundscape of performances and spoken word\, bathed in a multi-screen presentation of images from Curiosities. Sound samples—snatches of overheard conversations\, quotations\, confessions\, and original texts—and Efram’s purposefully gritty black-and-white images surround the audience in a multi-layered setting for candid portraits of the odd\, unusual\, and darkly fascinating characters in the book. \nEfram’s Curiosities are augmented by neo-noir experimental soundscapes from Jim Coleman (This Wilderness\, Gain Control\, Cop Shoot Cop) and Sarah Register (War Bubble\, Talk Normal). Reading from her own work and a collection of other sources\, Nicole Blackman (Golden Palominos\, Recoil\, KMFDM) and actor/screenwriter Tony Drazan (director of Hurlyburly and Zebrahead) give voice to the anonymous pedestrians\, street vendors\, nightcrawlers\, and characters reminiscent of a Weegee cast of sordid superstars. Jubilant drum corps Nossos Tambores opens the evening. \n  \nAbout the Performers \nDANIEL EFRAM: Photographer \nEfram has photographed intriguing characters in Spain\, Portugal\, France\, Cuba\, and the U.S. for years and continues to be inspired by photographers like Weegee\, Diane Arbus\, Brassaï\, Sylvia Plachy\, and Garry Winogrand. Efram shares their desire to master the candid portrait\, and hunting and collecting of the odd\, unusual\, and darkly fascinating. Efram’s work manages to invite his subjects to inhabit their space with often unexpected edge and empathy. \nNICOLE BLACKMAN: Writer/Spoken-word performer \nCreator of multisensory performances The Courtesan Tales\, Beloved\, and Bloodwork\, she has recorded with The Golden Palominos\, Bill Laswell\, Recoil\, KMFDM\, Scanner\, and Firewater. Blackman’s book Blood Sugar became a cult classic (now out of print)\, and her work appears in anthologies and publications including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café\, Live Through This\, New York Quarterly\, and Bust. She wrote the foreword and co-edited Curiosities with Efram. \nJIM COLEMAN: Musician \nAn American musician who plays keyboards and sampler. He was a member of 90s noise- rock band Cop Shoot Cop. As a solo musician\, he specializes in instrumental electronic music and film scores. His two current projects are This Wilderness and Gain Control. \nSARAH REGISTER: Musician \nCurrently performing with War Bubble. Register has released two albums with noise-rock project Talk Normal\, and toured as guitarist with EMA and bassist with Frankie Rose. She has mastered more than 2\,000 albums\, including Grammy-nominated releases from David Bowie\, Lee “Scratch” Perry\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Tiësto\, and The Shins.  \nTONY DRAZAN: Actor \nDirected Imaginary Crimes starring Harvey Keitel\, Hurlyburly starring Sean Penn\, and episodes of The West Wing; wrote and directed the 1992 film Zebrahead. \nNOSSOS TAMBORES \nLed by Rob Christiansen (29 Hour Party People\, Eggs\, Grenadine)\, Nossos Tambores is a mini-drum corps named after a song by their favorite group and inspiration Nação Estrela Brilhante do Recife (“National Bright Star of Recife”). \n
