SUMMARY:An Evening With Original Cockette Rumi Missabu
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is excited to present a colorful\, compelling performance and screening featuring special guests Chris Tanner\, Agosto Machado\, Hayley Nystrom\, Diego Gomez\, Jarvis Earnshaw and Vic Sin\, with shorts by Joe E. Jeffreys\, David Riley and Kimba Anderson. \nJoin us for a deep dive into the heyday of San Francisco hippie culture and a celebration of a cultural explosion that began in the late 60’s. \nThe Cockettes were an avant garde psychedelic hippie theater group founded by Hibiscus (George Edgerly Harris II) in the fall of 1969. The troupe\, of which Rumi was a core member was formed out of a group of hippie artists\, men and women\, who were living in Kaliflower\, one of the many communes in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, CA. The Cockettes pioneered an eclectic style of dress and costume never seen before\, drawing inspiration from various sources such as silent film\, Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s\, Broadway musicals and Surrealist aesthetics. \n

DESCRIPTION:Every Month on The Full Moon at 4pm Sharp\nIn this Harvest Moon edition of the Full Moon Show\, curated by Rani O’Brien and starring Jenny Lee Mitchell\, Maria Dessena\, and Pandora Burlesk\, Mad Jenny helps us harvest what we need most to get through these trying times. Her cabaret stylings feature songs from life in Berlin in the 20s and 30s by Mischa Spoliansky\, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill\, Brecht and Hanns Eisler\, Claire Waldoff\, and more. She sings of love\, money\, sex\, gender\, and surviving in Berlin at a time of great uncertainty and danger. It may well be our time\, too. \nAbout Mad Jenny\nMad Jenny sings On Suicide by Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler \n\nIG: @madjennytheater \nFB: Mad Jenny ; Pandoraburlesk\nTwitter: @madjennytheater @raniobrien \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of Tom Murrin. Murrin\, aka the Alien Comic\, is known as the Godfather of Performance Art. Every full moon\, Tom performed the Full Moon Show in honor of his moon goddess\, Luna Macaroona. When he had a club date that fell on the full moon\, he’d wrangle his friends to perform as his guests—pushing the careers of such groundbreaking performers as David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. If not\, he performed on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Howl! Happening’s monthly series continues that tradition\, with performances in the gallery and surprise pop up performances on the street. \nAbout The Tom Murrin Archive \nHowl! Happening is the repository of the Tom Murrin Archive comprising masks\, costumes\, scripts\, correspondence\, photographs\, and tapes of performances going back to the early 70s. Murrin (February 8\, 1939 – March 12\, 2012) also known as The Alien Comic and Jack Bump\, was a performance pioneer whose life and work inspired both artists and audiences for over 40 years. He was a member of the first generation of La MaMa playwrights. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nUnder the guidance of rock manager Jane Friedman\, Tom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. Since the mid 80s\, he’s created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. His plays Sport-Fuckers and Butt-Crack Bingo were produced at Theater for the New City and La MaMa and directed by David Levine. Tom was the first performance artist to appear on stage at the original Dixon Place location at 37 East First Street in 1986. \nThe Full Moon Show is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement / Creative Learning\, supported by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. LMCC.net \nPhoto copyright @charley.llama

SUMMARY:George Harris III\, aka Hibiscus "Flower Power Man"
DESCRIPTION:Reading and Performances\n  \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present Flower Power Man\, an event celebrating theater artist George Harris III\, aka Hibiscus (1949-1982). This evening will highlight an influential and flamboyant life with multimedia and live performance. Special guests will also read from his new biography Flower Power Man. \nHibiscus’ career intersects with seminal events of the 60s and 70s relating to theater\, politics\, gender\, and the LGBTQ communities. While protesting the Vietnam War in 1967\, George became the subject of photojournalist Bernie Boston’s iconic photograph “Flower Power”\, while placing a flower in the barrel of a national guardman’s rifle at a peace rally in Washington D.C. En route to San Francisco\, George underwent an outrageous makeover\, growing a glitter-ornamented beard and changing his name to Hibiscus. \nThe term flower power came to epitomize a style of peaceful protest championed by Hibiscus’ friend Allen Ginsberg. They were lovers briefly but Allen fled the relationship\, complaining there was “too much glitter in the bed.” \nHibiscus and his family reinvented themselves during the Off-Off-Broadway movement of the 60s. From the early ‘Let’s put on a show!’ days in Florida to the risky move of transplanting the whole tribe to New York\, Flower Power Man depicts the euphoric highs and terrifying lows of an artist’s way of life. \nFrom original musicals at La MaMa\, Judson Church\, and Theater for the New City; to the founding of psychedelic gay liberation theater troupes The Cockettes and Angels of Light\, and the 80s powerhouse glitter-rock band Hibiscus and The Screaming Violets; Hibiscus’ courageous\, outrageous artistry continues to influence contemporary theater\, music\, fashion\, gay politics\, spirituality\, and urban-club life. \nTwo decades after his death from AIDS-related illnesses\, Hibiscus continues to be recognized as a free spirit in gay liberation. \n  \nPhoto: Bernie Boston\n© Bernie Boston Collection\,\nRIT Archive Collections

SUMMARY:Local Knowledge Magazine Issue #6
DESCRIPTION:Launch Party\n  \nHowl! Happening invites you to celebrate the release of Local Knowledge #6. A journal of art and literature\, the magazine brings together poets\, prose writers (fiction and non-fiction)\, and artists to foster conversation\, exploration of the creative flow\, real dialogue\, and experience. SUMMARY:Stooge: A film by Madeleine Farley
DESCRIPTION:Screening and Discussion\nHowl! Happening is pleased to present Stooge\, a feature-length documentary film about Iggy Pop’s number one fan. Stooge is not your typical rock ‘n’ roll documentary film. Nominated in 2017 for “Best UK Feature” at London’s Raindance Film Festival\, director Madeleine Farley’s epic odyssey has been described as Spinal Tap meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. A discussion with director Farley and co-producers Stephen Smith and Martin Kloiber follows the screening. \nThe film narrates the story of Robert Pargiter\, a magnetic\, childlike superfan of Iggy and The Stooges\, who goes on a fanatical quest to keep rock alive. Like a fly on the wall\, we follow him on a trek to London\, San Francisco\, L.A.\, and Miami\, as the film becomes an intimate introspection into his journey—and more broadly—a study of one man’s personal obsession. \nComedy and tragedy intermingle with the pathos of his personal demons\, and ultimately the serious business of dealing with his life offers him a way back to his joie de vivre. View the trailer here. \nStooge is essential viewing not just for fans of Iggy Pop\, but for fans of soul\, passion\, and above all\, friendship. —DA Film Review \n  \nAbout Madeleine Farley \nMadeleine Farley is an award-winning British director whose previous work includes Trollywood\, a feature-length documentary about the homeless in Los Angeles\, and Gorilla School\, a 13-part series for the Discovery Channel about the plight of western lowland gorillas in Africa. \n  \nAbout Howl! SUMMARY:Chris Tanner: Here’s Looking at You
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 6 – Sunday\, September 30\, 2018 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 6\, 6–9 PM \nWe need Tanner’s work now. At this moment—now more than ever—we need to collectively embrace art as celebration; glamour as resistance; desire\, allure and romance as defiance. \n—Karen Finley \nTanner’s work is about looking. Deeply. In the eyes. Seeing inside to the core of deep vulnerability in each of us. It’s also about being ravaged by beauty. Even in this #MeToo moment\, it continues to be easy to dismiss the feminine in art\, the embellishments that dazzle\, and the extravagance that meets the eye within the wild beauty of Chris Tanner’s over-the-top work. \nWhile this career survey is about paintings and drawings created over the last decade\, it comes out of a remarkable personal story that starts with his mother Sally Tanner—“a tough broad\,” Tanner says. As an assemblywoman in Southern California\, she helped write the Lemon Law and lived with her partner Patricia Hofstetter\, a municipal court judge. These two larger-than-life women shaped Tanner’s character\, informing his work. \nThe exhibition includes four series of works—each with its own inspiration—that emphasize ornamental\, visually-luxuriant design. Intensely huge eyes; dreamlike metaphors glittery\, embroidered\, and bejeweled; and the value of visual pleasure\, pattern\, and decoration are apparent in his work. Freed from the constraints of the prevailing historical legacy of minimalism and conceptual art\, and indebted to liberation politics—particularly feminism and queer culture—his work is celebrated as “fierce and resplendent” by artist Robert Kushner in his essay for the show’s catalog. \nThree huge tactile paintings of peacocks are rendered in rhinestones\, crystals\, old German paste\, seed beads\, shelf paper\, glass\, tiger’s eye\, polyester glitter\, shells\, and acrylic paint. Kushner connects the visual metaphor of peacocks that intersects both their lives by describing Mughai emperor and aesthete Shah Jahan’s Peacock Throne. It took six years to complete\, cost more than the Taj Mahal\, and was described by 17th century contemporaries as “a peacock with elevated tail made of blue sapphires and other colored stones\, the body being of gold inlaid with precious stones\, and having a large ruby in front of the breast\, from whence hangs a pear-shaped pearl of 50 carats.” Hello\, Chris\, we all know you were there\, says Kushner. \nThe mythology of the peacock runs deep: James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room (1876)\, now installed in the Freer Gallery of Art…the belief in ancient Greece that the flesh of peafowl did not decay after death\, rendering it a symbol of immortality…the childhood memory of color TV and the significance of the ubiquitous NBC logo…“the peacocks [that] sometimes roamed wild in the San Gabriel Valley suburbs of your and my childhood\, their piercing screams loud enough to wake you out of slumber\,” as Kushner puts it. Tanner’s peacocks embody the mysterious strength of this bird and make it manifest in time and space. \nTanner uses glamour to blur the lines between high and low\, art and decoration\, object and idea. The emotion in Tanner’s paintings can be appreciated in four heavily embroidered\, beaded\, mirrored\, and bejeweled canvases the artist describes as “Mae West meets Mary Todd Lincoln.” For him\, these paintings are about positive and negative poles of power and vulnerability. The hair embellishment in one is a memory of his father’s shame at wearing a toupee; the blue in another is the camp fantasy of Maria Montez\, her jeweled hand in a pool of water; and pink saturates a painting made to evoke burlesque and gay life of the 1950s. Tanner is also a well-known and acclaimed performer and in the final painting of the series\, he pays homage to the woman he has “always wanted to play on stage—the big crazy fag hag” Mary Todd Lincoln. \nIn a series of intimate\, mostly black and white nudes drawn from life\, Tanner explores a tension between the artist and his subjects’ vulnerability. Categorically explicit\, in these intimate drawings he reduces his imagery to line and feeling—discarding embellishment to honor the sitter’s unashamed sexuality. \nAlso included in the exhibition are a series of drawings on wallpaper—mostly military\, and Hawaiian from the 40s—featuring huge eyelashes\, big red lips\, and accoutrements that read like kooky\, two-dimensional drag. \nHis appropriation of everything shimmery reminds us about the surface thrill-shrill shallowness of empty promises and things bling. But we can dance. Wear perfume to cover the stink. His extreme embellishments and décor-defused accoutrements expose the blur of grotesque quick-change artists. He is really saying what matters is the love within\, rather than without. —Karen Finley \n

SUMMARY:Zhe Zhe Season 2 Episode 4: Semper Fidelity
DESCRIPTION:THE SURREAL SATIRICAL CULT WEB SERIES IS BACK \nJoin Howl! Happening: an Arturo Vega Project as we screen Zhe Zhe Season 2\, Episode 4 starting 7pm.\nA hilarious satirical web series about the glamorous misadventures of three fame-famished posers in a post-reality New York\, Zhe Zhe\, created by Ruby McCollister\, Leah Hennessey\, Emily Allan and director E.J. O’Hara\, offers an unflinching look at the dystopia that has become our reality. The first season of Zhe Zhe foresaw the mainstreaming of wingnut conspiracy culture and commodification of political protest. \nIn this latest episode\, “Semper Fidelity”\, hijinks ensue when Mona DeLiza enrolls at a prestigious liberal arts college and angsty androgyne Jean D’Arc opens a record store. \n“Rude and ‘hashtag problematic’. SUMMARY:W.O.(e).R.D: Woman of Experience Read Downtown
DESCRIPTION:Howl! Happening is delighted to present Heather Litteer’s reading series W.O.(e).R.D Women of Experience Read Downtown featuring Ada Calhoun\, Pamela Sneed\, Chi Chi Valenti\, and Jo Weldon. \nLitteer started the series more than a decade ago to highlight women that walk a bit off the beaten path and color outside the lines—“my sisters with a downtown state of mind…rebels\, revolutionaries and rock stars!\,” as Litteer describes them. \nBringing together women from all disciplines in the arts to explore new ideas\, read out loud\, and let the inside animal out\, Litteer has cultivated a safe environment for expression\, risk taking\, and literary freedom from societal restraints. \n“It’s a place of no judgment\,” says Litteer\, “where women from diverse threads in the culture can meet and speak to each other and where they are free to voice their lived experience.” \nEven more relevant today than when she began the series\, W.O.(e).R.D started within the Antagonist Art Movement reading series in 2007\, curated by Ethan Minsker of Psycho Moto Zine. In 2010\, it migrated to Wild Project\, where Jo Weldon and Litteer collaborated on hosting and curatorial duties. Heather is part of the HOWL! Happening family\, and we are happy to showcase the series this summer. READ OUT LOUD! \nHeather is the W.O.(e).R.D Woman of Experience Read Downtown creatrix\, curator\, and host. \nAbout Heather Litteer\nHeather Litteer is an actress and has been a vital member of the downtown performance\, alternative cabaret\, and indie film scene. Litteer is a member of Caden Manson’s critically-acclaimed Big Art Group and of the legendary arthouse performance nightclub The Jackie Factory. She is the producer of W.O.(e).R.D Woman Of Experience Reads Downtown. \nAbout Chi Chi Valenti\nChi Chi Valenti has spent over three decades shaping and chronicling New York City’s nightclub demimonde. Since 1980\, she’s participated in alternative nightlife as producer (Jackie 60\, Night of 1000 Stevies)\, journalist (The Village Voice\, Details\, Interview)\, venue owner (Mother)\, doorperson (The Mudd Club)\, and publisher (Verbal Abuse Magazine\, The Motherboards NYC). With her husband Johnny Dynell\, Valenti formed The Jackie Factory in 1990—a creative collective that produced the weekly Jackie 60 club for a decade and is still active today. Valenti will read from the memoir One Decadent Life\, penned by her late dear friend\, the literary and fetish icon Terence Sellers\, who died in 2016 and is best known for the S&M classic The Correct Sadist. \nAbout Ada Calhoun\nAda Calhoun is the author of the New York City history St. Marks Is Dead: The Many Lives of America’s Hippest Street\, and the memoir Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give. \nAbout Jo Weldon\nJo Weldon is headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque and author of The Burlesque Handbook (It Books\, 2010). SUMMARY:Full Moon Show
DESCRIPTION:Every Month on The Full Moon\n4pm Sharp\n  \nAbout Tom Murrin and the Full Moon Show \nHowl! Happening houses the archives of the late Tom Murrin. When dateless and unbooked\, he’d perform on the street for passersby\, transforming the pedestrian atmosphere with his madness and magic. Tom wrote four plays performed through La MaMa and produced by John Vacarro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous\, including the offbeat hit\, Cock Strong\, which toured with Ellen Stewart’s La MaMa Troupe to Paris\, Amsterdam and Brussels. \nTom began to perform under the name Alien Comic\, opening for acclaimed punk bands in rock clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. As Alien Comic he performed in such venues as The Pyramid\, 8BC\, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut\, Performance Space 122\, Dixon Place\, La MaMa\, and more. From the mid 80’s on\, he created\, performed\, and curated a series of variety nights at Performance Space 122\, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and Dixon Place\, called The Full Moon Show. SUMMARY:Eszter Balint & Stew I Hate Memory

Happening is pleased to present an evening of songs and stories called I Hate Memory! A wistful travelogue of the winsome past of EB\, which brings together two legendary downtown creators\, Eszter Balint (The Star) and Stew (The Director). Featuring an anti-cabaret which co-stars the Streets of New York and the Late 20th Century\, and which features appearances by family\, film and fame\, immigration\, joy\, theater and shame\, dance floors\, open doors\, avant-garde life\, papaya ice cream and the Shah of Iran’s wife. A reluctant memoir served on bed of song and dirt\, with a punk aperitif and Jimmy Carter for dessert. \nEszter sings and plays guitar and violin\, while Stew does the quieter singing and plays guitar\, with Vincent Sperrazza on drums and Kato Hideki on bass. \nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nI hate memory\nMemory’s a predator \nEszter Balint is a singer-songwriter with three critically-acclaimed solo albums. SUMMARY:Kestutis Nakas When Lithuania Ruled the World
DESCRIPTION:Part of the annual Writers Block Festival of Staged Readings and Performances to Benefit the Actors Fund\nHowl! Happening is pleased to present When Lithuania Ruled the World—a play cycle in four parts by Kestutis Nakas. Featuring a cast of East Village performance veterans including John Kelly and Edgar Oliver\, this is the first time the play cycle has been presented in its entirety. The event marks the centennial year of independence for modern Lithuania. When Lithuania Ruled the World traces the rise of the medieval Lithuanian Empire\, invoking the myths\, legends\, and worldview of Europe’s last pagans. By turns tragic\, comic\, ridiculous\, romantic\, and grotesque\, the play tells story of a dynasty that forged a tolerant\, polyglot\, multicultural empire while resisting conquest and forced Christianization by crusading Teutonic knights. \nWritten in Nakas’ trademark “iambic funtameter” style\, this sprawling work was first presented in New York’s East Village at the Pyramid Club\, La MaMa\, and Anthology Film Archives in the 80s and early 90s. \nDirectors \nParts One & Four: Kestutis Nakas \nPart 2: Brian Butterick (aka Hattie Hathaway) \nPart 3: co-directed by Gary Ray \n  \nPart One: Thursday\, June 14\, 2018 / 7 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part I \nPart Two: Friday\, June 15\, 2018 / 7 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part II \nPart Three: Sunday\, June 17\, 2018 / 2 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part III \nPart Four: Sunday\, June 17\, 2018 / 6 PM / $10\nFor tickets to Part IV \nAll of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit Howl! HELP and the Actors Fund. \n About WRITERS BLOCK 2018 \nHowl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project is pleased to present the annual Writers Block 2018 Festival. Created to showcase the vision of contemporary writers\, performers\, and artists—many of whom got their start in the nightclubs\, seminal performance spaces\, and theaters associated with the East Village and Lower East Side—the festival showcases some of the most important playwrights and performers in theater today. New works in progress are presented at this intimate\, ultimate downtown theatrical event. Writers Block 2018 runs throughout the year with a week of short plays and one-acts in the fall and various blocks of full-length plays over the year. \nThe festival is a benefit for the Howl! Emergency Life Project (Howl! HELP)\, which provides emergency financial assistance and social service support to artists who have made or continue to make their careers in New York’s East Village and Lower East Side arts communities. All of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Actors Fund. \n“Howl! HELP is an integral part of Howl Arts’ vision to provide a safe haven for artists from our neighborhood\,” says Jane Friedman\, founder of Howl! Happening. “Writers Block is both a creative outlet and a benefit to insure the health and well-being of our community.” Howl Happening also hosts free\, monthly health care and housing workshops presented by the Actors Fund.
