SUMMARY:Jeffrey Wengrofsky Secrets of the Heart – Films Telling the Truth that Hurts
DESCRIPTION:A Film Festival \nHowl! Happening hosts the fourth Secrets of the Heart Film Festival that is dedicated to getting past the propaganda about that most sacred sentiment—love. Does love thrive amid illusions of truth and beauty? Is it natural or is it learned? Is love pure or merely a reflection of broader patterns of power and knowledge? What is the relationship between love and allegedly lesser impulses like lust and greed? How do the varieties of love—romantic\, familial\, comradely—get along with one other? Ten short films answer these questions and more. \nSaturday\, March 19th 7pm – 9pm / Free \nread more about Jeffrey Wengrofsky

SUMMARY:Punk and New Wave Videos from Paul Tschinkel’s Inner Tube
DESCRIPTION:New York Music New York is a compilation of bands recorded or videoed in New York clubs for Paul Tschinkel’s Inner-Tube\, a cable TV show. Broadcast between 1979-1983 on Sunday nights at 11 PM on Manhattan Public Access Channel C\, the film revisits one of the most vital musical periods in New York City. The bands—taped at Max’s\, CBGBs\, the MUDD Club\, and other venues—illustrate the raw energy and power of this explosive era and include Suicide\, The Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders\, The Dead Boys\, The Ramones\, The Dictators\, The Cramps\, Dead Kennedys\, Mink DeVille\, Jayne County\, The Contortions\, The Feelies and 8 Eyed Spy with Lydia Lunch all in live performances. The renewed interest in the 70’s and early 80’s\, can be seen today in Martin Scorsese’s HBO series Vinyl\, a fictionalized version of this period while Tschinkel’s films and video style depicts the authentic\, energetic performances of that exciting time. \nInner Tube Videos \nSunday\, March 6th\, 7pm – 9pm / Free \nread more about ART/New York \nPhoto: Jayne County

SUMMARY:Luna Macaroona Full Moon Show with BOBBIE
DESCRIPTION:A Tom Murrin/Alien Comic Invention \nTom Murrin\, the Alien Comic and ‘Godfather of Performance Art’\, did his Luna Macaroona show—without fail—on every full moon. With a club date or not\, he’d perform a piece wrangling many of his friends to perform as guests—pushing the careers of David Cale\, David Sedaris\, Amy Sedaris\, Blue Man Group\, Ethyl Eichelberger\, Lisa Kron and many others. When he didn’t have a club date\, Tom would take it to the street! One of his favorite spots was in front of the Plaza Hotel where pedestrians on Fifth Avenue would encounter his delightful madness as they went about their business. \n  \nAs part of Howl’s ongoing monthly series celebrating Tom’s wildly inventive Luna Macaroona shows\, Howl! Happening is pleased to present dual gender performer BOBBIE\, with a street performance in front of the gallery which houses Murrin’s archives. A hybrid ingénue and storyteller\, BOBBIE is an avid collector of gay history and sees his work in a continuum of culture—a young\, post-modern gay performer who mines the 80s and beyond to write stories and create characters that he describes as being in “a suspended state of intermittent Identity.” Coordinated by curator/performer Salley May. \n  \nFree to the public

SUMMARY:Catherine Texier Russian Lessons
DESCRIPTION:Book Party and Reading with Paula Bomer\, Chloe Caldwell\, and Larissa Pham \nCatherine Texier\, the co-editor of the legendary downtown literary magazine of the 1980s\, Between C and D\, returns with a new novel of her own\, Russian Lessons. A classic of erotic literary storytelling\, Russian Lessons is as bold and compelling as Yukio Mishima’s The School of Flesh\, or D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. \nTexier tells the story of a divorced mother who gets involved with a tempestuous thirty-year old Russian illegal immigrant. The edgy affair quickly turns into a darker bond of obsession and compulsion as Yuri constantly pushes the limits sexually and emotionally\, driving their relationship to an intense and brutal pitch. \nSunday\, February 21st. 7.00pm / Free \nAbout Catherine Texier \nAbout Paula Bomer \nAbout Chloe Caldwell \nAbout Larissa Pham

SUMMARY:Marcia Resnick Punks\, Poets and Provocateurs: New York City Bad Boys 1977-1982
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring signed contemporary silver prints and large archival pigment prints from her photographic tour de force of the culture heroes of the 1970s and early 1980s. Taken in New York during the period of the counterculture’s final climax\, the show features portraits of rockers Johnny Thunders\, Joey Ramone\, James Brown\, Iggy Pop\, David Byrne\, Klaus Nomi\, and Mick Jagger; beat poets Allen Ginsberg\, William S. Burroughs\, and Gregory Corso; and provocateurs and raconteurs Abbie Hoffman\, Divine\, Jackie Curtis\, Quentin Crisp\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Christo\, Anthony Bourdain\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Charles Ludlam\, and the incomparable John Belushi\, as well as bad girls Debbie Harry and Lydia Lunch. \nIn 1977\, twenty-six-year-old conceptual photographer Marcia Resnick was rocked out of her controlled studio environment and into downtown avant-garde landscape by the punk rock music that was electrifying New York. “The people from the extraordinary New York milieu amongst whom I was living and working had no way of knowing that the years between 1977 and 1982 were enchanted\, endangered\, and unrepeatable”\, explains Resnick. \nIt was a time and place populated by icons\, iconoclasts\, and antiheroes whom Resnick documented with a unique and evocative eye. In Punks\, Poets and Provocateurs: her photographs of the enfants terribles reflect this unique and highly influential time in the worlds of jazz\, rock and roll\, literature\, art\, and film. Of her subject matter\, Resnick says\, “A Bad Boy does have to be the prototypical James Dean character. Or like Marlon Brando in The Wild One. A Bad Boy is someone who has a special magic\, who has charisma\, and who braves living on the edge.” \nPhotos in the exhibition are included in Resnick’s\, Punks\, Poets and Provocateurs\, NYC Bad Boys 1977-1982\, a new book with text by Victor Bockris\, published by Insight Editions.

SUMMARY:PUNK PANEL New York\, New York: Why New York City was "The Greatest City in the World" in the 1970s and the Punk Movement had to happen here
DESCRIPTION:Hippies hated New York City\, in fact it was the epitome of everything they disliked. They wanted to go back to nature and live in communes. So it was natural for people who wanted to move to New York City in the early 1970s\, in spite of its bad reputation\, to rebel against hippie ideals. And a city like New York offers more realistic goals for the environmental movement\, a hippie ideal\, than going back to nature: your carbon footprint is lower when you live here\, etc. I would like to open the show by playing a Country Joe And The Fish record\, two songs from “Together”: One is “The Streets Of Your Town” (where they complain “Good-bye New York City! The subway is not the underground!” and “The Harlem Song” (so utterly racist that it’s impossible to describe). \nWith Roberta Bailey\, Richard Hell\, Mary Herron and more.

SUMMARY:Tim Clifford Threat Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Threat Assessment by Tim Clifford\, an exhibition of works that transform the visuals of American gun culture into meticulously rendered indictments of violence and death. \nThe exhibition showcases Clifford’s Threat Assessment series; large scale\, stark black and white ink and paper inlay drawings of carnival shooting galleries done at life size. Filled with ducks\, birds\, and abstract geometric designs\, Clifford says of the series\, Threat Assessment explores the imagery of 20th century carnival shooting galleries and continues my investigation of violence and the way fear manifests itself in the material objects of our culture. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Tragedy Is Not Enough\, the largest work yet in the series at 12 x 24 feet. \nTarget Panic\, a series of 100 gouache drawings based on pistol and sniper targets forms an elegant\, abstract grid that belies the psychological terror of the title. This series refers to a condition that affects competition shooters and archers when they are no longer able to keep a steady hand or shoot straight. Says Clifford\, it’s a psychological affliction that severs the link between hand\, mind and eye a situation not unlike the artist or image maker in our world of information overload. \nIn his essay for the catalogue\, scholar and curator Randall Edwards says of Target Panic\, The meticulously hand-drawn works recall colorful Suprematist compositions\, Agnes Martin’s faint gridded lines\, or Gabriel Orozco’s geometric permutations of circles. Excavating found images\, however\, Clifford’s works are not abstractions\, but simulacra\, vulnerable representations of images created only to be violently ruptured. \nAdditional works in the exhibition include A Good Death and Double Blind. A Good Death depicts a willow tree as seen on early 19th-century New England gravestones. The title refers to the history of ars moriendi\, the Christian tradition of the art of dying. \nDouble Blind\, a new silkscreen and woodcut print made for the exhibition at Prints of Darkness in Long Island City\, features two targets in black and white printed over a newspaper image of two boys carrying a parade float with a banner reading “Our All American Town.” \nClifford’s first solo exhibition is timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School\, Clifford’s childhood school in Newtown\, Connecticut. Both series are part of his ongoing investigation of the way fear and violence are encoded in our cultures vernacular objects.

SUMMARY:Artists Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong Alone At Last
DESCRIPTION:An Interactive Installation Exploring Gender\, Sexuality\, and Desire Before the AIDS Crisis. \nAlone at Last was conceived in 1981 as a video installation that explores issues of gender and fantasy at a time when traditional views of sexuality were not just being challenged but overturned. Created by artists Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong\, both pro-sex feminists when pornography was a hot-button issue in the women’s movement\, Alone at Last invites the viewer to initiate an encounter with a stranger in the dark and be seduced\, in the process becoming part of the artwork. \nDesigned in the pre-AIDS era when bath houses and back rooms\, no-strings sex and role playing were all part of life in downtown New York\, Alone at Last invited artists\, musicians\, and locals with an offer of self-representation\, a chance to enact what desire\, romance\, and even manipulation meant to them. Seizing on the trope of the Times Square peep show booth\, Ivers and Armstrong redefine notions of sexuality\, extending a come-on ”not with the cliched sentimentality of broadcast TV or the banality of hardcore porn\, but consistent with the artists’ truth. \nThis is how it works: A participant (for she/he is no longer just a viewer) enters a darkened booth\, and using a touch screen\, answers a series of questions: Gay? Straight? Do you like boys who strip? Two girls? A foreign affair? Finally\, a video screen brightens. On it\, a potential lover including well-known club goers\, artists\, and personalities of the time appear and attempt to seduce the participant with a performance ranging from 30 seconds to seven minutes. \nThe 52 seducers represent a spectrum of gender and sexual choices\, in a revealing portrait of the wide-open freedom of expression and pursuit of pleasure that characterized Lower Manhattan before the AIDS epidemic changed things forever. Alone at Last compels the viewer to participate through conscious choices and sudden decisions delving into private\, perhaps hidden\, sexual feelings. It also winks at the idea of television as the ultimate seducer but\, through interactivity\, changing the dynamic and making it new. \nWhen it was first imagined\, technological and financial considerations proved to be insurmountable obstacles to the artists’ vision\, and so the project languished for more than 30. Today\, a partnership with Howl! Happening has made it a reality. So surrender your inhibitions\, get into the booth and finally be Alone at Last.

SUMMARY:Secrets of the Great Pyramid The Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Cultural Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 1981\, Ronald Reagan had been president for less than a year when a group of New York art-school flunk-outs threw a party at a small Polish/Ukrainian dive bar on Avenue A in New York’s East Village. Ed Koch was mayor\, the East Village was in flames\, the street drug trade was rampant\, and rents were cheap. First Avenue was viewed as the farthest east any sane person would dare to tread. The bar was called the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge; the party\, Home On the Range. Within a few weeks\, a simple excuse to frolic had transformed into a seven-nights-a-week venue – an epicenter of art\, music\, performance\, and social change. \nCarrying on a rich\, centuries-old New York tradition\, the Pyramid had many faces and functions. It was a watering hole\, a social club\, an art gallery\, a dance hall\, a music venue\, a sexual hunting ground\, a happening\, a haven. To its denizens\, it was always a freak magnet. And for many\, it was home. It lasted for roughly a decade. Like the great ethnic and cultural movements and migrations in the East Village’s long-past history\, it seemed to disappear in the twinkling of an eye. \nWhat didn’t disappear were the changes the Pyramid inspired in culture and society at large. Nor the work of many of the artists and performers who got their start there. \nFeatured in the three-week exhibition\, will be artwork and visuals from both deceased trailblazers and living\, working artists who the Pyramid embraced; ephemera from the past; performances that highlight four distinct time periods within that golden decade; and a variety of other events that spotlight the enduring spirit of The Great Pyramid. \nART AND MULTIMEDIA BY\nStephen Tashjian\, Greer Lankton\, David Wojnarowicz\, Joseph Horatio\, Julie Hair\, Billy Beyond\, Samoa\, Trey Speegle\, Deb-O-Raw C\, Jack Waters\, Peter Cramer\, Laura Levine\, Michael (London) Berube\,Tanya Ransom\, Alice O’Malley\, Clayton Patterson\, Jayne County\, Connie Fleming\, Chris Tanner\, Keiko Bonk\, Frederick Nunley\, Aner Candelario\, Lynn Grabowski\, Antony/Blacklips\, And Whyland\, Billy Beyond\, Nelson Sullivan\, Marjan Moghaddam\, Richard Oszust\, Mark Rizzo\, Scot Wright\, John Kelly\, Flloyd\, Leslie Lowe\, Tweed Theaterworks\, James Romberger\, Marguerite Van Cook\, Tennavision\, Dug Wah\, Robert Petrick\, and more TBA. \nPERFORMANCES BY\nHattie Hathaway\nHapi PhaceHeather\nLitteerKestutis\nNakasPaula Sjunneson<
