One side of the debate Monday night has stated its clear purpose of robbing individuals of their human rights, including reversal of the gay marriage ruling and the disqualification of gay-parented children from receiving health care benefits.

VISITING HOURS is about the nature of love and how love is tested within a family. The play happens to feature gay marriage and parenting, although the term gay marriage never appears, and the parenting depicted, though diligent and well-meaning, has not produced an exemplary result. Marian and Beth are simply a couple enduring every parent’s worst nightmare– that their child has gone wrong and may be beyond redemption.  In one way alone, the play is political: the plight of these two women elicits deep empathy across the lines of gender, orientation, and yes, political affiliation to a significant degree, based on feedback from the two regional productions it has received.

We are already parents. We have the right to be recognized as such.  We seek to parent for the rewards it can bring, and we accept the risks.
